Develop Ideas through Investigation, photography

Blog Post 1: ABSTRACTION STARTING POINT

Abstract photography can be defined as capturing images in which the subject isn’t the most interesting element. Albert Renger-Patzsch and Aaron Siskind photographed the ordinary to reveal their beauty. Uta Barth reversed the typical use of the camera, shooting out of focus and Andreas Gursky photographs the repetition of elements. During this unit, you will investigate appropriate examples of abstract photography and respond in your own way.

“Abstract photography can be defined as capturing images in which the subject isn’t the most interesting element.”?

I think this quote means that abstraction is taking a photo of an element or subject that is not familiar to modern society or people. Mainly, photographers try to get a picture of an object that is common and meaningful in real life to get the viewers’ attention and create sympathy. However, some pictures show rare objects or phenomena. Actually, abstraction creates more attention because of its unique style that is not related to real life, which creates a marvelous and wonderous feeling.

Context- it’s all about it

Can a ‘bad’ picture ever be ‘great’? – How important is the context in photography?

In 1967, the American artist John Baldessari exhibited his ‘Wrong’ series.  He only took “bad” photos; making the picture blurry and unidentifying the subject. Since then, there has been negative recognition of “bad” pictures. However, I feel like sometimes even ‘bad’ pictures can be unique and ‘good’ because not all “perfect” pictures are considered positively or outstanding to others. But I strongly believe that context is somewhat important in photography because it gives reasons to care, creates tone, and helps the readers to understand the purpose of the photo easily.

“Trapped” by Marc Aronson

I read the book called “Trapped” by Marc Aronson. This book is about the 33 miners got trapped in San José, Chile and the progress of being rescued. It describes geographic information and vivid situations and actions miners had during being trapped. It also has some resources and pictures to show the story more understandable.

I really enjoyed this book because it had a lot of geographical information and showed the serious situation by showing some pictures. I also found out some central ideas that could be

When I read this book, the central idea came up to my mind: When people are in serious situation, they tend to be more bonded to survive.

Through reading this, I realized that people tend to be more collaborative and closer when they are in danger. Throughout the pages,  the miners always collaborated and become one’s supporter. They always had a meeting about being safe, following their own roles and rules, and comforting the other when they were about to lose their minds and hopes. These kinds of behaviors could lead to people being more calm and safe.

The other central idea I found was never losing hope.

Even though miners were in urgent problem, they tried their best to survive. They always endured by thinking of their family. Every miners became one’s supporter. Because of this, no one could lose their hopes, and as a result they could all be safe.

That is it for my blog. Thanks to everyone who read through all of this. Again, “Trapped” is a really good book so I recommend you to read it.

Should Roger run away or trust the woman?

This found poem is made from the book called “Thank You, M’am”. In the story, the boy named Roger tries to steal a big woman’s purse to get his suede shoes even though he knows that what he’s doing is wrong. But he fails and instead of getting a purse, he makes the woman mad. However, she didn’t take him to police but takes him to her home. Unlike Roger having a conflict with himself whether to believe her or run away, she takes care of him with her kindness and sympathy as if she’s taking care of her real son. As a result, Roger reflects himself deeply and decide to never do this kind of bad things again. This is from the 27th sentence to 45th sentence, where the woman is still trying to give him some food and Roger still wondering whether to go out or trust her. I wanted to show the internal conflict Roger is having with himself either to go out or not. The picture is for showing Roger having a deep thinking.
