1.Alex Webb

Alex Webb is a well known street photographer, he’s famous for capturing the busy and colorful life of cities. His photos usually contains movement of people and vehicles. He uses light and color very creatively, giving his images a different feel. Each of his photo feels layered, showing multiple things happening at the same time. Webb’s style reflects the busyness and beauty of urban life, where he gives everyday moments a meaning. In the second photo Alex Webb uses photography to show strong contrast between a quiet, personal moment and the busy energy of the city. The pole in the middle splits the scene, with a man leaning against it, eyes looking down, looking lost, while the busy street behind him continues with people and bright red signs. The sunlight and shadows added a special mood, focusing on the man while everything around him feels fast-paced and full of life. The bold colors and writing on the pole make the scene feel real and specific to a city, adding to the busy and layered feel of the picture. The photo beautifully captures how city life can be both lively and lonely at the same time. Together with his wife, Rebecca Norris Webb, he explores places around the world, sharing unique moments of city life on his Instagram account@webb_norriswebb.

2. Robert Capa
These three photos show important moments from World War II. The first two are from the D-Day invasion in 1944, with soldiers landing at Omaha Beach. They were taken by Robert Capa, a famous photographer who captured the dangers and chaos of war. Even though many of his pictures were lost, the few that remain show how hard it was for the soldiers. The third picture shows people in France celebrating their freedom after the Nazis were pushed out. These three photos capture key moments from World War II, highlighting both the intense struggles and the eventual joy of liberation. The first two images come from the D-Day invasion of 1944, where soldiers bravely landed at Omaha Beach. These photos were taken by Robert Capa, one of the most famous war photographers, who risked his life to show the chaos and danger of the battlefield. Photos like these, often taken by photographers like Capa, show both the struggles and happy moments of war.

Final Pictures

I used a wide-angle lens to show the big building, lines of the building to direct the eye, symmetry and patterns for balance, unique angles to make the photos more interesting, and some natural light to show the textures and depth better in my pictures. I wanted to show a theme of futuristic architecture by capturing the glass element and the curve of the building.

In this set of photo i used low iso and a aperture of 2.5 to create a shallow depth of field and highlighting the vivid colors of the rose while blurring the background. and i used the water on the ground to create the reflection of the rose.

Photography Final Project

  .

I used a wide-angle lens to show the big building, lines of the building to direct the eye, symmetry and patterns for balance, unique angles to make the photos more interesting, and some natural light to show the textures and depth better in my pictures. And I used low iso and poured water on the ground to make the reflection of the rose and low iso to create the depth of the photograph. Furthermore, I used low iso and high contrast to show the reflection of the sunlight through the window of the building.

Experiments

I took these photos in the Phenix center in Beijing, and i used a low iso and wide angle lenses to take these photos and the reflection.

Artist Research

These photos show everyday city life through reflections on windows. Some parts are clear, while others are blurry, giving a sense of movement. The lighting is soft, probably from streetlights or evening light, and there’s a mix of dark shadows and soft colors, making the photos feel moody. You can see repeated patterns like window frames, and the blurry people and lights make it feel like the pictures were taken from a moving vehicle. The reflections and layers make the scene feel deep and full of detail.

Mind Map

Concept of My Project

For my project, I want to capture the things  in everyday life, such as, building, people on streets. My message is that simple, . I want the audience to feel calm and connected to these ordinary scenes.

Inspiration from Photographers
I will take inspiration from Joshua K. Jackson, a photographer who used color, light, reflections, and shadows to create beautiful images of everyday city life. I will try to use light and color in a similar way to make my photos more emotional like his photographs.

Techniques and Style
Vivid Color: to focus on colorful elements in my surrounding.
Reflections and Glass: Use reflective surfaces like windows or puddles to add different mood for the photo
Close ups :focus on smaller details , textures, shadows

I will photograph things like city, streets and people, the colors in my photos will be mostly a dark mood but with vivid colors.

Favorite Images
When I look at my favorite images, I notice that I love:

1. Bold Colors: His use of bright, vivid colors that make the images stand out.
2. Strong Contrast: The way he uses the light and shadow to create depth and a darker mood .
3. Reflections: How he uses reflections in glass or puddles to make the photos more interesting.
4. Motion Blur: The sense of movement he captures, which makes the city feel alive.

Vision Statement
The goal of my project is to show that everyday life is full of hidden beauty. By using light, color, and composition, I want to show people  the small details that are often overlooked. I hope my project will remind viewers to slow down and notice the world around them, especially in busy, fast-paced places.

The WORKING title of my project is: Moments in the City

I want my audience to feel the beauty in the city and some overlooked moments.

I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs by Joshua K. Jackson that show Vivid colors, strong contrasts, and reflections,.

Reflection Experiments

I used the water reflection on the ground to reflect the rose’s inversion, and I used a aperture of f/2.5 and a shutter speed of 1/125 to make sure the picture doesn’t blur, and i used a lower ISO to make the picture darker. For the mirror reflection I used the mirror to reflect Thomas, also I put the mirror under the water and under the sand.

Photographer Analyse

Lee Friedlander:

Naoya Hatakeyama:

Lisette Model:

Robert Holden:

Compare & Contrast

The four photographers, Friedlander, Naoya Hatakeyama, Lisette Model, and Robert Holden, present a unique perspective in their photos; they all have very different styles and subjects. Lee Friedlander’s Friedlander’s black-and-white style uses complex compositions, reflections, shadows, and unexpected angles. His photos depict urban environments such as streets, parks, and buildings. From Lee Friedlander’s photos, we can see that he turned everyday street scenes into visual puzzles; he also uses a lot of reflection, for example, the car rearview mirror and the window showing himself, and there’s the TV inside. Lee Friedlander’s Friedlander’s work focuses on odd and overlooked moments in life that are often unnoticed.

In contrast, Naoya Hatakeyama’s photo captures the urban landscape in Japan; his photographs often focus on the interplay of light and weather. His pictures usually contain cityscapes at night with rain or fog, adding a mood and mystery. Hatakeyama’s photo uses a lot of color and light, which makes Hatakeyama’s work a lot different from Lee Friedlander’s black-and-white images. Naoya Hatakeyama’s work shows the city’s beauty, where natural elements such as rain, fog, and light interact. These elements in his photographs have created atmospheres that lead the viewer to connect and think of the picture. Lisette Model’s photographs are about people and are very personal. She also uses black and white styles, but people are all that matters in her work, unlike Friedlander, who likes city landscapes. She shoots people’s everyday doings. Then, there are close-up portraits in which she shows her feelings. From her images, we can feel the peace and calm; her lens shows us the person’s feelings. We can tell from her pictures and the complexities of the outside world. In contrast, Robert Holden Is the odd guy who likes his stuff arranged and clean, telling a story in a documentary way. He doesn’t include people in his pictures but the things used or left behind.

In comparing these, photographers have different use of focus, techniques, and use of colors. Lee Friedlander and Lisette’s Model does not capture everyday scenes and focus on people. However, Lee Friedlander’s photographs include more environment than people, yet Lisette Model’s photographs prioritize people and the environment as a background. Naoya Hatakeyama and Robert Holden’s photos focus on a broader context, with Naoya Hatakeyama capturing landscapes like the Tokyo Tower and Tokyo City at night and using the weather and the city lights to create a unique mood for the photograph. At the same time, Holden takes pictures of well-arranged objects of a person’s objects. Using only black and white by Lee Friedlander and Lisette Model’s photo has a particular emotional and visual impact; for instance, complicated compositions show the busy city and the people on the street. At the same time, Naoya Hatakeyama’s photo uses vivid color and weather to show the thriving town. In conclusion, each of these photographers offers a different point of view in their pictures, Fiedlander’s urban scene model’s portrait to Hatakenyama’s night city view and cityscapes, and Holde’s photo about personal objects and are all using their ways to deliver a story.
