Describe the Work of the Artist

Most of Angie Mcmonigal’s photographs have something in common. Angie Mcmonigal is a famous photographer of taking interesting and creative perspective in commercial architecture. This type of architecture is a way to create something orderly and harmonious. However, Angie Mcmonigal’s photograph often employs unique perspective, exaggeration, and simplification. Angie Mcmonigal uses multiple formal elements such as lines, shapes, patterns, tones, and focus.

The Reason I chose Angie Mcmonigal

Angie Mcmonigal’s works caught my attention because she uses a very modern image of the building on camera and took pictures from a very creative and interesting perspective. The materials and techniques Angie Mcmonigal used also inspired me; she used multiple techniques in her photographs, such as angles, perspectives, patterns and sharp shapes. Each of her photographs contains a certain pattern or style which is use of repetition. I found the simplicity in the her photographs was interesting. Usually when you think of abstract photography, you might think of dynamic camera movement and abstract photos. However, Angie Mcmonigal’s photographs are very sophisticated and reminiscent of a certain pattern, I felt interested and unique from those elements she used.

Quotation from Angie Mcmonigal

“It’s good to take advice and criticisms but at the end of the day you need to stay true to yourself. To have focus and direction, yet room to grow.” – Angie Mcmonigal

This is a famous quote from Angie Mcmonigal. This quote employs the importance of focusing on yourself and desires rather than those of other people. It simply means that you aren’t depleting yourself to make them happy. I chose this quote because it is a good saying to anyone. It has positive meaning to everyone and I like how she mentions “stay true to yourself”

•Why did you choose this image in particular?

I chose this photo because it has sharpe focus on sculptures, also found unique features unlike other abstract photographs.

•What do you find surprising or unusual about this photograph?

This photo consists two sides of repetition. Those long rectangles are facing forward in all four directions. I found unusual and surprised in a perfectly scattered direction of sculptures, which is very elaborate. It actually seems like reflection from a mirror and create the exact reverse side.

•Look carefully and choose ONE of the Formal Elements that you think is important in the photograph (E.g. Focus, Light, Line, Repetition, Shape, Texture, Value/Tone).

I think the most significant formal element used in this photo is line and used of repetition.

•Describe why you think it is important.

I discover that “line” is a significant element in this photo. Because lines (which also represent long rectangles) in this photo are constant. The vertical line in the center of the picture creates overall balance of this photograph. Every line has the same angle starting from the bottom and until the top. It is zoomed from the bottom of the edge, and gets smaller when it attach the top.

•What do you like about the style? Be specific and explain your answer.

I like the style of Angie Mcmonigal’s photography. Angie Mcmonigal often uses unique techniques to approach the style of architecture. Geometric patterns in her photographs also make her work more creative and provides many different perspective of the object. I like how she focus more frequently on bold architectural details. She often uses landmark buildings and urban elements in her photographs, rather than sweeping cityscapes. Those unique and detailed elements used in her works made me interested in her photographs. Black and white tone also plays significant role in her photographs, which helps the photo seems in detailed and particular.
