American Revolution Journal, was it worth it? – William Jia

I’ve decided to write a little briefing about the American Revolution before reaching our main topic:

The American Revolution fought between 1775 and 1783, was pivotal in American and world history. It marked the beginning of a new nation, the United States of America, and a new era in the relationship between the colonies and Great Britain. The question of whether the American Revolution was worth it is a complex one, with arguments on both sides.

On the one hand, the American Revolution was a costly and bloody conflict. It resulted in the loss of thousands of lives and caused significant economic damage to both the colonies and Great Britain. The war did not immediately result in a perfect society or government for the newly formed United States.

On the other hand, the American Revolution was a necessary step toward the establishment of a free and independent nation. It allowed the colonies to break free from the British monarchy and establish a government that was more representative and accountable to the people. The principles of liberty, democracy, and individual rights that were championed during the revolution continue to define the United States today.

In conclusion, while the American Revolution was a difficult and costly conflict, it was ultimately worth it. The establishment of a new nation and the principles that it was founded on have had a lasting impact on the world and continue to inspire people around the globe.

The Big Thirst – Summary

The Big Thirst is a non-fiction book written by Charles Fishman, this book talks about status reports from scientists, water crises all over the world, and economic issues in countries. It spoke in the third person point of view since it’s a status report, and the author didn’t include his opinion in the book. Instead, he used many sources to address the message of what he wanted to say to the audience.

The main idea I’ve found is water shall not be wasted, but used. Many places throughout Earth, including well-developed countries such as Australia or the United States, have water shortages. Nearly 1/3 of the world’s population doesn’t have access to water or clean water that’s consumable. People in the U.S. spend at least 5 gallons of water to just flush their toilets each day, and the whole population of the United States is just 331 million people, so more than 1.6 billion gallons of water are wasted every day to just flush our toilets. Meanwhile, people from other countries barely have

Looking down, I’ve found some interesting evidence that supports our main idea. UN reports that nearly 3,100 children die every day because of consuming unclean water, they’ve been using water that has not been cleaned or wasted water that has already been used. UN claimed that it’s because of their country’s economy, global status, and several government issues that have been causing uncleaned water.

Ideas of humanism

I agree with humanism, it teaches the people how to improve themselves into in after the Middle Ages. It lays the fundamental of each human behavior throughout today; that’s why I agree with humanism so much. It’s not only about history, it’s about helping yourself out.

|PD-5| Crab Utensil

Part 1: Divergent Ideas:

The idea of how we got these utensil ideas, our first idea was the four-sided pizza shovel, which can hold an entire 9 inch-12 inch pizza with only 1 hand. The second design was the spoon-fork-knife triple utensil, in which we basically get those 3 combinations together and form 1 utensil. The third design was a crab utensil that is a combination of a triangular blade and a spoon. After doing some research online, we found out that our second design was already designed and manufactured. Later soon, we also eliminated our first idea, the four-sided pizza shovel, the reason is that it can get your hands dirty when you hold the shovel. Lastly, we chose the crab utensil, well there are utensils that are designed to eat crabs, but there are like more than 10+types of utensils to eat that, and it’s not convenient. So we chose crab utensil to at last to design it more convenient for people to use.

Part 2: Feedback refinement:

After sharing our divergent ideas, we got a lot of feedbacks from people on where to improve on. We made the design more convenient by scaling the design to the smallest as possible, around 6 centimeters. Then, the triangular blade got scaled around 2 times larger than its original, we know that it can cause more damage if we made the blade a bit larger, but it can help us easily crack the crab’s head/back. It would let us have a good experience of eating crabs, not only the triangular blade can crack the head, it can also saw off the crab’s legs and lungs, to get its meat. Not only, we also scaled the spoon’s size to the average female crab’s width of the central brain. We refined our design using people’s feedback, but the thing is, we didn’t really get any useful comments from people, most of the refine and design are done by ourselves by providing feedbacks.

Part 3: Reflect & Share:

Some of our strengths and success in our design is that we made kind of abandoned the traditional use of crab utensils. Made it more like a travel kit due to we scaled the entire thing smaller. After that, we’ve reflected on our work and shared it with people. Also, we’ve flipped through our feedback and refinements, our divergent ideas. This help us to lead to the success of our design, simple, easy to carry, and creative. Like what Tim Cooks mentioned, “This isn’t just an upgrade, it’s a breakthrough.” we did succeed our mission of making the crab utensil easier to use, more affordable in a good material. Reusing the feedback and our ideas, reflect and enchant it. I’ve also looked at the ISB design process and discussed it with my partner, so we can have a better understanding of our design process and where we are at right now.

The story is about a boy fetching people’s bags to maintain living. But today, the boy met this woman who did not punish him for fetching her bag, instead teaching him to do not to that. The boy regrets what he did at last, and he feels guilty, he barely managed to say thank you to the woman who gave her a chance.3

 

Design Speaker Reflection

It’s a little bit hard to use the wood glue, but I managed a way to let it dry off quickly by blowing air to the wood glue where I painted.

I am proud of the legs that I made, at the finishing point, they looked a lot better than I imagined.

I learned how to use advanced tools in the design lab that other people cannot

If I can start over again, I will make the legs thicker so they can balance it better.

I struggled the most with the legs, it doesn’t fit in the beginning and it doesn’t balance well.

The most important decision I made is adding 4 legs to support the big chunky piece, it was 2 legs at the start, I decided to add 2 more legs because it can look cooler. I think it’s important because using 2 legs might not sustain well holding the weight.

I planned to play the first song which is Soviet Anthem on my speaker because I wanted to see how the speaker echos the background music of the soviet anthem

Design reflection

My biggest was making my design possible because it was hard attaching all cardboards together, sometimes hot glue slides down the cardboard which makes my success a little bit harder. Even if I make it, I failed it because the hot glue slid down. But successfully, I made it without my hands shaking too much.

My biggest obstacle was making a lid on top, I have to stick four small pieces of cardboard on another cardboard to make the lid.  I have to make sure that the four small pieces are the same and make sure the hot glue is not sliding off. I failed a little bit but I guess it’s ok because it’s not a pretty big influence on the project.

I learned how to control the hot glue without falling off, well kind of. I developed my sketching and my planning during the start of my project.

I found out when I started making a project, I always change the plan a little bit because my plans are sometimes not realistic. Now I get to know myself a little bit more, I chase for success.

If I have more time to edit and revise my prototype, I will make the handle stronger. The handle right now is pretty weak and it’s bent, I might use some steel to make the handle stronger.

 

My design project

The biggest success of my game was the goal. I spent over 2 days designing the goal. It’s very hard to hold the cardboard together while you are using hot glue. I think it was worth it.

The biggest obstacle was the sticks and the cardboard men, I spent 1 flex time fixing the sticks and sticking the cardboard men. The sticks are hard to fix and it’s very weak, but I tried my best at the last lesson.

The one thing that I would like to improve is to change the sticks’ length, it’s too short and it’s very hard to control the sticks. I will stick 2 sticks together if I had much more time to improve and reflect.
