Back to the Future 2077

I am most proud of the teamwork between me and my partner Zack. Both of us tried something new, I tried to video-edit, and Zack tried to draw for the first time. In the end, we feel like our video was very successful.

A Fight for Righteousness

People call me Jules. I live with my parents near Versailles, in Melimontant. I have worked in the farmlands for more than five years already. Like my parents, I was a peasant. Our whole family was part of the Third Estate, which was made up of people like. We lived under the absolute rule of the King, Louis XVI. I work everyday, night in and night out. Yet, still, after something happens, I take time to record it on my journal. During these times, I cherish every time I write because time seems to be running out for the French people…

Continuity and Change:

Continuity:

Violence was something that existed throughout the entire Revolution.  Events like the September Massacres in 1792 which killed 1,200 people, the Terror which killed more than 14,000 people in 1793, and the Vendee Uprising from the nobles in 1794 which led to massacres and an estimated total of 100,000 deaths proves that violence happened throughout the entirety of the Revolution. The use of the Guillotine as an execution method throughout the Revolution was also an example of the constant use of violence in the Revolution. Moreover, Republicanism is a continuity, too. The Tennis Court Oath was an example, as after getting kicked out of the Estates General, the Third Estate demanded that everyone was equal and had a place in society. The Declaration of the Rights of Man, which stated that all men played the same roles in society. Republicanism existed throughout the entirety of the Revolution, and it was actually what the revolutionaries pushed for in all those revolts, which was to be equal, to make sure everyone had equal contributions. Lastly, Nationalism was an idea that was there for the entire revolution. Nationalism during the French Revolution was emphasizing on national identity. The national motto “Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” was a way to express Nationalism. The Declaration of the Rights not only gave each person a place to contribute in society, it also emphasizes on the whole nation rather than an individual’s monarchy. It claimed that being proud that you were french was essential. Finally, Napoleon also extended his nation by invading foreign territories. He did that to paint an influential and strong image for France. Through these examples that happened in different time periods of the French Revolution, we could see that Nationalism was an important concept throughout.

Change:

There was a big change in terms of equality. For example, The Declaration of Rights of Man made sure that all citizens were equal before the law, the execution of King Louis XVI demonstrated that no one was superior the law, not even the king, and Napoleons success coming from a humble origin showed that everyone had a chance in the new order of society. These examples that happened at various stages of the Revolution shows that there was a big difference in equality for everyone after the Revolution. Moreover, another change was that France became a republic. An example of this change was Louis XVI’s death. When he was executed by the guillotine, there was no more monarchy, and it started a democratic government. The death of the King  symbolized the peasants constant push for a Republic, and marked the Revolutions success. Lastly, feudalism, or the church lost its powers. The specific example comes from the Great Fear. On August 4th, 1789, when the National Assembly tried to cool down the peasants revolutions, they formally abolished the feudal regime, or the feudal rights. Therefore, from this example, we could see that because the peasants disliked how much rights the clergy had, the feudal rights were abolished, and that was a big change, in terms of the shift in power and how the whole of Europe used to value the Church and was very serious about it.

Rising from the Ashes: The Revolutionary Fire that Changed France Forever

IMPORTANT INFO BELOW:

(Note that I made some slight changes (added some sound effects) to my part and Benjamins part of the video, so note that this is a slightly different version of video compared to Lucas’s blog post, so examine/grade our videos seperately).

Paris, France. It was where it all started. France was a powerful state, but when King Louis the 16th continued his father’s legacy, there was major corruption. In the 1780’s, Pre-Revolutionary France was made up of a Socio-Political System called the Old Regime, or the Ancien Régime. This Socio-Political System existed in most of Europe during the 18th Century. In this social system, there was a clear divine between the privileged and unprivileged. The unprivileged had to pay taxes and were treated horrendously, while the privileged, did not pay any taxes, and were treated extremely well. People were divided into the “Three Estates” in France, The First Estate was the high-ranking church members, or clergy, the second estate was made up of Nobles, or mostly made up by the privileged class. These two estates payed no taxes at all, supported France’s monarchy and the king, controlled education, and owned forty percent of land despite being only two percent of the French Population. Moreover, they collected taxes from the Third Estate, which was ninety-eight percent of the population. The Third Estate, contrasting with all the privileges of the First and Second Estate, had no privileges at all. It was made up of suffering peasants, workers, and merchants, along with some priests. They worked, and paid lots of taxes, for example, like church tax, poll tax, income tax, and even salt tax. They had no exemptions or privileges. Frances monarchy was ruled by the Divine Rights., and was ruled by absolutism, when King had absolute power. They believed God put the world in motion, power was given by God, and noone could question God. However, soon, problems arose. King Louis the 16th and his wife Marie Antoinette were lavish spenders, and France was experiencing a drought and famine. There was also deficit spending, and the government was spending more than they could afford. In desperation, King Louis asked for increased taxes, but the Second and Third Estate refused. So he summoned the Estates General, which sparked the era of the French Revolution in May 1789. To summarize, some short term causes for the French Revolution is Bankruptcy caused by deficit spending, the Great Fear, which was caused by the worst famine in French History, and the breakdown of the meeting of the Estates General. Long term causes include Absolutism, the unjust system of the Old Regime, poor harvests, and the influence of the Enlightment, in which was a philosophy in which people used logic and reason to determine how governments are formed. Watch our video to find out more specific information about this bloody era in French History!

Circuits and E-Textiles Review

Develop and Plan:

Project 1:  My target audience is my little brother, and I made a bookmark for him so he could enjoy the pleasure of the gift as well as enjoy reading books more. I wanted to show appreciation for him, and show that he has a special place in my heart. There is no one on this planet that shares the same family as I do except for him. Despite the arguments and fights to the finest margins of who is eating the last piece of chocolate, I still love him, to the deepest part of my heart. He is my little brother, and I want to make him feel warm, and I want to put a smile on his face for everything that we have been through together. I did not make a wristband or pin, because it is not practical for my target audience Tiger (little brother), as I know that he does not like hats, pins, bands, and not even socks. He likes a relaxing outfit. My brother is a reader, so I figured a bookmark would be much more practical. I also asked him for what he wants and he has a similar response. I also made changes design-wise during the course of making the product. I was originally going to use the two LED’s (which is still attached like the original plan says) for Ditto’s (Pokemon) eyes, but I realized I attached two LED’s with different colors. It’s a silly mistake, and I was not thinking precisely during that stage of making the product. This is why I adjusted my design as it will not look good if I had Ditto with eyes of different colors. Therefore, this mistake led to the change in design to Among Us, and I needed to use my creativity for this adjustment. The design was originally planned for my little brother as well, as he likes Pokemon too. This made me adjust my plan, and I was proud that I did it flexibly. The original plan had minor changes which consisted of using thread more efficient, based on feedback from Ms. Kim.

Project 2: This plan was for Project 2, a Slingbag Project. Here, we changed from a battery holder to a CPX, which involved coding, and a thorough understanding for inputs and outputs. My plan was based on different emojis, and the items I used were a dog emoji, a sunglass emoji, and a chicken emoji. I put sensors on the blank spaces, and I put LED’s in appropriate places. The functions are as listed below: When click button A, make light green +make sound (magic wand). When click button B, make light light yellow. When pin A1 down, write pin A7 High, Pin up to low. When Pin A2 down, write pin A6 high, Pin up to low. When pin A3 down, write Pin A4 high, pin up to low. My target audience is myself, because after giving so much of my projects to others, I would want one for myself too! I am a goofy guy, and I like visually appealing emoji’s. Emoji’s are a great way to express emotions! Overall, I did not need to make big changes to my plan, and it shows the growth of my plans, and how I could create clear, succint, and to-the-point plans in the first attempt. This is a precious memory for me, because I am not skilled with my hands and I am not patient. I view this project as a “breakthrough” for myself, and I have improved massively in my technical skills as well.

Overall, I became a much greater planner for projects, based on these two big projects for E-textiles, because I could create clear, succint, and to-the-point plans in the first attempt.

Create and Improve:

Project 1: This is just my second time attaching sewable electronics to felt, and the first time was just a practice run. Therefore, this is my first time attaching more than one LED. This was new to me, and based on the feedback Ms. Kim gave me based on my initial plan, I just needed to sew from one LED to another. Therefore, this was something new to me. Another thing that was new to me was attaching felt for the decorations. For the Among Us figures, I needed to be really careful with the small pieces so that it is still visually appealing, and I needed to use front stitches and back stitches. I made silly mistakes for three times in a row, which meant that I needed to redo my project for a third time. I think something that was hard for me was really the last attempt, in which I talked about earlier. It was a silly mistake, as I accidentally used an LED light that is different from what I want. I wanted to give up, but that “breakthrough” that I talked about earlier really made me proud. I needed to think outside the box, and I knew there was another solution rather than redoing the project. I made adjustments to my design, and edited my plan, so that this design could still work. So for me, thinking of a solution when I was tempted to quit was really hard, and making adjustments to the design, thinking creatively, was what helped me.

Project 2: This time, Project 2, as I said was a Slingbag Project. Here, we changed from a battery holder to a CPX, which involved coding, and a thorough understanding for inputs and outputs. Here, from the photos, you could already see an improvement in the stitches, and how pieces were better attached through stitching. Attaching thread to a CPX was definitely new, but also intereting to me. The process of making the product with smooth, and there were no need for redos. Looking at my second project, you could see that each stitch is neat, and that each stitch is where it needs to be. I felt familiar of the process of attaching components. I didn’t make silly mistakes, and I thought through every stitch twice. This, in the end, increased the quality of my project, even if my project didn’t work in the end, due to time restraints. My stitches were neat, but we can still feel a sense of rushing for when I was stitching. However, I did my best to complete the project in time, and I worked hard for it! Even if the project didn’t work, you could still sense improvement in technical skills. I think I maximized the time we were given the best I could!

Overall, looking at the two products, you could see that I created and improved my design skills significantly, especially the stitching. Each component was attached clearer, and was better for the function of my product. I was really proud of how I cinched and looped WAY better, and showed lots of improvement.

However, I still could grow, in which my stitches are a bit too big, which results in unstable connection. In the future, remind myself that stitches should be small and tight for stable connection. Also, attach the sensor fabric+ sewable components tighter! Through the two projects, I learnt that this is REALLY IMPORTANT!

Reflect and Share:

Project 1:

So for me, thinking of a solution when I was tempted to quit was really hard, and making adjustments to the design, thinking creatively, was what helped me. The advice I would give the students next year is about the loop stitches and the cinch stitches. You really need at least a 10-15 loop stitches when you are attaching a sewable component. As I have experience now, not tying the components tight enough could result in redoing the project again, as there will be insecure connection. Mentally, I know that it will be difficult when you make silly, but hard-to-fix mistakes. I tell the students next semester to keep calm, and to think of new solutions. This is the beauty of design, right?  Some unanswered questions about the topic based on the project is: How can we apply these skills into daily life, how could it be practical? How could we use this skill to help people? How could we add more to the project?

Project 2:

One of the most challenging areas for this project was definitely the plan. Knowing the ground is the negative, and knowing what points could be used for positive, you need to draw the traces really carefully, so that you knew exactly what to do during the process of making the product. Another challenge is time management. There are lots of things that you need to do in the process of making this product, and there are so many components, and so many requirements that we must fulfill. Work slowly, do one thing at a time, and have a focused mind. The main tip for next semesters students is sewing the sensor tape real tight, and use back stitches for it. How well the sensors are attached is essential for the effectiveness of the LED’s for your product! Also, again, looping your stitches real tight!

Overall, this course was fun and challenging, and I think you should keep the two practice runs for stitching (Real helpful), keep the mini-lessons on positive/negative, coding etc., and of course, the fun check ins 🙂

Some things that could be tweaked include:

Having more time on projects (even if it is not online learning), give us more examples on products, and find a way to make lessons (positive/negative, coding etc.) more entertaining.

Overall, I loved this course!

Drifting on a raft, thoughts drifted far away, and prepared itself for what lied ahead.

Unbroken, a non-fiction book written by Laura Hillenbrand, describes a breathtaking journey which started with a devastating plane crash for Louie Zamperini, and portrays how he managed to overcome these life threats with grit, determination, and optimism. The story of Unbroken was set in the devastating times of World War 2 and talks about what life was like in POW camps as well as how life was changing for everyone living through the times where shots were fired across nations. Our protagonist, or main character of the story, is Louie Zamperini. He was an American Runner who participated in the Olympics, and as he was preparing for the 1940 Olympics, he was notified that it was cancelled, and he was forced into war. This led to a series of events which showed and highlighted Louie’s sense of hope and determination when he endured tough times. Minor characters introduced in the book include Phil, the only survivor alongside Louie of the Green Hornet crew, the Bird, who was the antagonist of the whole story and symbolized the evil of the nature of war, and Mac, who did not make it out alive of the harsh times of survival on the raft. Moreover, some other minor characters that were introduced in the novel were Cynthia and Louie’s hopeful family. One of the main theme/ideas of the book was that “when history carried [Louie] into war, his resilient optimism would define him.” (Hillenbrand 9). This means that you can get through extreme hardships if you remain strong and positive in the toughest moments. To briefly sum up the plot of the story, Louie was very naughty when he was small, and he was hated in his school. He used running as a way of redemption, and he ended up qualifying for the 1936 Olympics. In 1940, World War 2 started, and Louie was forced into the military. This led to a tragic event, the crash of the Green Bomber, which resulted in Louie’s brutal survival experience on a raft for 47 days. The raft drifted to a place where they thought that their lives were saved. It was quite the opposite, and on those islands in Japan, lurked belligerent and cruel enemies that would haunt Louie for years to come…….and it was one man in particular, who shattered Louie completely. Does Louie survive on the islands that constantly threatened death? Does Louie, skinny and broken, have the grit to fight against that man who swore to murder him? Crying under a tree every day, will Louie’s sister Sylvia ever see her brother again? Read the book to find out!

Below is my first sample for the notebook page for lesson 3. I wanted to show and track some central ideas or themes that has appeared throughout the book using evidence from various places from the book. As you could see, two ideas that were a huge part of our story throughout was that war affects peoples personal lives and that you can through extreme hardships if you remain strong and positive in the toughest moments. See some examples below!

This notebook page below shows a note-taking strategy in which I am aware of how various parts connect to another issue or topic in the book, even when it seems different. In the notebook page below, I have used 3 chunks of text and applied it to this new note-taking strategy. I used examples from different parts of the book. Some of the big ideas were WWII, Survival, Louie Zamperini, Perseverance, Optimism, Loss, Family and Fear. See below for how these ideas connect to various parts of texts!

One of the biggest events, or transition point for Unbroken, was when Louie drifted on his raft for 47 days, he drifts to an unknown island of the Japanese, the Marshall Islands. As this is a main event in our book, I analyzed the causes and effects of this event based on the things that happened in different stages of the book. To look at the causes and effects, look at the notebook page below!

During Lesson 8, we talked about how introductions to settings can provide us with new central ideas for the book. In the notebook page below, I talked about two scenes, when Louie arrived at a POW camp, and the description of the setting on the raft. Using the descriptive words, I created themes and ideas based on the authors introduction of a setting. Look below to examine, central ideas include how enemies will do anything for the better of themselves, or that prisoners in world war 2 were treated nastily.

This is a deep dive into my notebook, and these notebook pages are selected based on the best notes taken in our unit “Stranger than Fiction”! Thank you for going through my notebook pages!

(I have at least two pages of notes that is included into the blog post that include/relate and heavily focus on central ideas that was essential and was visibly important  throughout Unbroken!)

First, I will introduce my design, or what I made. This is made with Sewable Electronics, and it is threaded with conductive thread. This is a project from our Circuits class, in which I selected to make a bookmark. This bookmark has a base of thin light coffee colored felt, and it is made with two LED’s connected with conductive thread. This project demonstrates the huge amount of learning that we have done in this class in the past semester, and demonstrates my understanding for circuits. The theme of this bookmark is Among Us, as the game is one that my little brother Tiger really enjoys. His favorite book series is “Diary of A Wimpy Kid”, and this bookmark is accurate in size for it to be used or applied when he is reading that book. To restate, my target audience is my little brother, and I made a bookmark for him so he could enjoy the pleasure of the gift as well as enjoy reading books more. To confirm, the placement, sewing, tie on and tie off positions are still where they were based on the original plan. I am actually proud of the setbacks that I have experienced during the course of the project. The first time making it, the positive crossed, or touched the negative, and in result, the Circuit wouldn’t work at all. Then, I tried a second time, and I watched for the positive and negative, and I corrected my mistake. However, the LED’s still wouldn’t light up, and I figured it was because I didn’t loop enough and forgot to cinch. Then, I tried a third time. I did all of the stitches slowly and precisely, and I learnt from my mistake. The pictures attached above show the final attempts process. I am proud of the process of trying again and again, but not giving up, reflecting and improving each time. This is a precious memory for me, because I am not skilled with my hands and I am not patient. I view this project as a “breakthrough” for myself, and I have improved massively in my technical skills as well.

Ideas of the Humanists

To find out how Humanist I am, you should look at the infographic attached above. Humanisma Renaissance belief, is the idea of reviving the interests for classical history and focusing one an individuals interests in life and nature. I am 86% Humanist, this is because I enjoy studying history, but only relatively. I love learning a variety of knowledge,  I focus on life of myself and others,  but I do not enjoy the nature as much as humanists should. To balance out, I calculated that I am 86% Humanist. Learning humanism, the humanities subject seem extremely important!

The Purse Plunderer Lingers

The Found Poem above was taken from paragraph 30-36 from the short story “Thank You Ma’am, written by Langston Hughes. Langston Hughes was an American Poet, novelist, and a social activist. He was born on February 1, 1901 and died on May 22nd, 1967. In this found poem that was created based on his short story, it shows us a Man Versus Self, internal conflict between one of the protagonists in the story, Roger. Roger is the protagonist in the story, as he is where the rising action starts with. Mrs. Jones, the lady, is the antagonist in the story, as she stops Roger from stealing from her. Roger is a young boy, 13 years of age, he was frail, and wore old tennis shoes. He had no one at his house, and he just wanted a pair of Blue Suede Shoes. The boy was poor, and it highlights a Man versus Society external conflict as well, with the boy battling against the poverty, and the Blue Suede Shoes become a symbolized object for what the character desires. There is also a Man versus Man conflict, where there is a physical fight between Mrs. Jones and Roger. However, the main conflict in this story, which is attempted to be presented in the found poem displayed, is the Internal Conflict of Roger. He was in the Woman, Mrs. Jones’s house. The door was left wide open. He could’ve ran away. However, the trust, the guidance, and the kindness that Mrs. Jones has provided the boy with makes him linger, hesitant about whether to run. 2 quotes highlight the internal conflict of Roger to the most significant way. The Inciting Incident is where the boy steals from the large woman. These 2 quotes are chosen, based on the Climax section of the book, in which the boy is left unattended, and the two options are right before his eyes. Run away from punishment or stay for gratitude and thankfulness? At paragraph 31, Langston Hughes wrote: The door was open. He could make a dash for it down the hall. He could run, run, run, run, run!” This quote shows that the Boy has the thought of running away, however, the word could, shows that the boy knows that he could run away now, but he is hesitant. He lingers in thought. This is the internal conflict at play. The author uses this section, this phrase, to highlight this conflict burning in Roger’s mind. In paragraph 23, the author jotted: “Roger looked at the door — looked at the woman — looked at the door — and went to the sink.” Based on this quote, we could see the conflict much more clearly. There are two highlighted sides. The woman, and the door. The woman symbolizes her trust that she has provided the boy, and the door highlights the boy’s thoughts to leave the house, and escape punishment from the fierce woman. This is the tough decision that our protagonist must make. Run through the door and out or trust the woman. In the falling action of the story, Roger makes a decision, and it reveals a lot about his character. This is the resolution of the short story as well. On paragraph 36, the author said: “He did not trust the woman not to trust him. And he did not want to be mistrusted now.” This highlights which side Roger has leaned towards. This shows us that Roger is a man who has gratitude, and through others actions, he could change his perspective, as he didn’t trust Ms. Jones in the beginning. This also shows that Roger realizes what his mistake is. He seemed impulsive and naïve for stealing, and for not thinking about the consequences when there was the inciting incident, and when we first met him through the exposition of the story. However, through his decision to stay, we could see that the character has learned. Overall, the boy learns an important lesson about kindness and trust from an unlikely source. Think about an unlikely or unexpected piece of kindness that others have done for you. Moreover, Roger realizes that no one is alone in this world, and that change is only possible if we help one another. Lastly, this teaches us that we need to give everyone a chance, no matter who you are. Gender, Race, Age, it doesn’t matter. Everyone deserves a chance, a source of motivation, and a spark in their lives. To conclude, I hope the boy grows as a person, and learn from his own mistake after this incident, and remember what the woman has provided him with.

Science 3-Class Design Challenge Review

Problem:

As the days flow by, everyday is getting wintrier, crisper, and frostier, Teachers would want to drink something hot and piping more than ever. But because the temperature is extremely hot, it would not be achievable to keep the heat comparable even in a short period of time, for example, 10 minutes. Our challenge was to create a Cup Insulator, the aim is to deny heat dropping monstrously, and that in 10 minutes, Teachers can still enjoy a hot drink.

Our process to the end product was:

We drew two detailed and precise models, with a clear statement of why our group thinks this design will function the way we fancy it would. We had apprehensive labels, annotations, and particulars on the apparatus we were going to use.

We created a prototype with paper to get a primary visualization of our Insulator, we made it to a very similar and precise size to the mug, also with labels of what the paper will genuinely be for our eventual product.

After we assured everything with our group, we started to make a final product.

For the first two sessions, we processed for our first design alternative, we calculated, pasted, and measured everything sharp and accurately, most essentially, we followed our procedure as planned. (We also added a few particulars to make it visually bulge, a Insulator that customers would purchase in stores). This design was mainly created and designed by @Max Shokatz and we used different materials such as felt, cardboard and paperclips.

For the last session, we processed for our second design alternative, we were unprejudiced and were willing to try out different apparatus such as velcro. We verbalized well with each other, and eventually came out with a end product, with some stupefactions along the way as well(we didn’t use hot glue a lot!). We also measured a lot, and created very efficiently. It was a day of drudgery, but we managed to finish both of our insulators, but didn’t get time to test. (Eventually, in the next Science Class, we tested it out, results were great!). This design was mainly created and designed by me @Thomas Sun and we used materials such as velcro and felt.

In the end, our group compromised with each other and came up with another startling idea, but with reasons behind it. We decided to put two of our Insulators together to cover up more parts of the mug to let the heat of the liquid inside it sustain.

My CER:

Claim: My claim is that a Cup Insulator must require a lid that can seal and shelter as much of the parts of the cup that will expose the liquid to air.

Evidence: In the first test, we didn’t have a sealable, solid lid, we tested our Insulator, it didn’t have a significant impact of the temperature of the liquid, its heat dropped monstrously(18 degrees). But in the second test, we had a constructed lid, sealing the whole surface of the mug, the. heat managed only to drop 10 degrees.

Reasoning: As days go by, the weather ‘s temperature will decrease, and of course the temperature of the air will also decrease. If you leave hot liquid to air, air will massively affect the temperature of a hot liquid. So having a lid that fully seals your mug is massively important, as our Data and Statistics show.

Reflection:

I’m proud that our Insulator functions, its aesthetics, but principally, I’m proud that our group had effective collaboration, cooperation, communication, fellowship, partnership and solidarity. Had fun working with them!

Some of the limitations our group experienced was the lack of work time, and the lack of materials

Design Cardboard Arcade Project Review

My biggest success was that everything worked as planned. Everything we decided to do in our draft was actually what we did. I worked well with my partner, we did everything methodically and sprucely, we had the materials we needed, we verbalized with each other, and I’m just glad everything worked out as planned, and that made our arcade a success. The 4th Graders also enjoyed it! We didn’t really make extra or significant adjustments to our design, and our plan from the start worked till the end.

Skills that I developed was improving and learning some skills that will help my designing and make it a more efficient and secure process. For example, I learned cutting a cardboard with a box-cutter efficiently, the cardboard didn’t seem too hard to cut after all, and I didn’t fear about bruising my hand again. I also processed well with my partner, and enjoyed working and sharing ideas with him! @Jason Huang

One piece of advice I would give to a future student is to make a thorough sketch, with labels of how the game is going to function and tools you’re going to need.

I really enjoyed design, and I’m already eager to come back next year. Thanks Mr. Layman! Thanks everyone!
