The Fall of the Red Coats

Typically, after a revolution, many things will change. But in the American revolution many things also remained the same. One significant change was that political power is now in the hands of ordinary men not a monarchy, King George III. Another change was that there was now an inheritance law where daughters or sons can inherit. Thirdly, people referred to the president as Mr. President. In contrast, one thing that stayed the same was that there was still™p0 slavery in southern America. A second change is that women still had less power compared to men and were not allowed to vote. Lastly, wealthy landowners and merchants dominated politics.

From Tax On Tea to Being Free

A cave exploration that lasted 18 days

All Thirteen written by Christina Soontornvat describes the 12 soccer players’ time with their coach, Ek, while being stuck inside a cave for 18 days and being rescued from the cave. The story takes place at the flooding Tham Luang cave in Thailand in 2018. The story starts with the boys and the coach exploring inside the cave and next thing they know they were stuck inside the cave.  The mission of rescuing the boys out of the cave now united many divers and cave experts from all over the world to lend their expertise. While being stuck in the cave the boys have no food and only cave water to survive off.  How were they found and rescued out the cave? What did they do to survive in the cave for 9 days without food? Read this book to find out!

While reading the book I found two different central ideas, one was major problems require global assistance and another one is nature can be beautiful yet deadly. I was also able to find two different themes in this book, the first one is trusting each other helps you in difficult times, the second one is when you are in a bad situation you should always keep calm and have hope.

The first theme i found in the book was trusting each other helps you in difficult times, I also added quotes from the book with page number to support my thinking. I was also able to find the first central idea which was nature can be beautiful yet deadly, I also supported this idea with quotes and page numbers from the book:

Another central idea I found in the book was major problems require global expert’s assistance, after writing the central idea in a box I added examples of expert divers with other people from around the world coming to help and supporting the mission, I also added page numbers from where the quotes came from:

Here is another notebook page with the second theme i found in the book, it was that the author believes that when you are in a bad situation you should always keep calm and have hope. After finding this theme I was able to find examples with page numbers of the boys and coach Ek keeping calm and having hope while being stuck in the cave with no hope. I was also able add on to this theme and showing how this theme was consistent throughout the book:

Another notebook page I did while reading the book was creating a pressure map of Coach Ek showing the pressures that he had to face throughout the book:

The final notebook page I wanted to share was one about connections. I first wrote some the the big ideas in the book than I wrote the outlines of two different parts. I used highlighters and arrows showing how the two different parts connect to similar big ideas in the book:

In conclusion, I really enjoy reading this book, it was really well written detailing many main parts of this rescue mission. I would definitely recommend this book to people who like reading nonfiction books about exploration or a rescue mission, I would also recommend this book to people who wants to know more about All thirteen.

Lather and Blood

Found poem by Hobbes Chan [STUDENT]

The found poem above was taken from page 4 of the short story “Lather and Nothing Else” , written by Hernando Tellez. It shows an internal conflict between “I”, the barber, and himself, who is the protagonist. In the climax of the story the conflict shows the barbers internal conflict of whether he should kill Captain Torres (who is an executioner) with the razor or not. He wants to be a hero and kill Captain Torres, but on the other hand he does not want to be a murderer. In this paragraph it shows that he is very nervous, and, in his mind, he is thinking that if he turns his wrist by just a slightly bit, he could kill Captain Torres. But once he kills him, the people will catch up to him and he might end up in lots of trouble. But he does not want to be a murderer, he is only there to do his job honorably and shave Captain Torres not to murderer him. The story might turn out to be the protagonist killing Captain Torres and running away or the protagonist might not kill Captain Torres and just let him go. But hopefully the protagonist resolves his internal conflict with himself.

Lamp design process

During this semester for product design, we had to design a locker phone holder that would be laser cut out of wood. My initial design was to just draw a basketball design on the wood for the phone holder. However, we had limited so we could have the option to choses between doing a lamp or the phone holder. So, after thinking about it I changes my mind and went with the lamp. After choosing the lamp my initial designs were to just put a tiger and an NBA logo on it. After thinking about the initial designs, we had to download Fusion 360, a software where we would make out designs. When I first used Fusion, I was very confused with it. I did not know how to draw a line correctly and the app kept crashing. After a few lessons on how to use it, I instantly felt more comfortable with it. I learned how to trim, break, circular pattern, and other things. I started finding pictures online to put on the lamp. I found a picture of a tiger, but it was way too hard for me, and I wanted to do something simpler. So, I kept searching and found a picture of a lion, I decided to use that picture and it took me very long to trace it. After finishing it I traced more things for the different sides, I traced a Kobe logo, an NBA logo, and a Nike logo. After tracing them I felt happy about it. But there was a problem the detentions were incorrect, and I did not know how to do the fingers. I felt very sad because all my work was just wasted. Plus, I was in online class and that made me feel even more helpless. I was sad but those problems are not going to stop me. I deleted everything and I started fresh. After doing everything, it all came down to the fingers, I was doing the fingers one by one, but it was just way too slow and too difficult. I got really frustrated with it and I asked the teacher how to do it. She told me to just use maker case and that it would be way easier. So, I went to maker case and downloaded the file, and I imported the file into fusion, at that moment I regrated that I did not start with this because once I imported it everything was already down. So, I continued with it, and I drew the designs for the top and bottom and after that, I put the whole design into Lightburn a software for laser cutting, I chose which parts to cut which parts to be drawn and which parts to be filled. After doing that, After it was done, I went to the school and picked the prototype. I went home and assembled everything together using tape. There was a problem with it and it was that the lions face was too thin and the NBA logo also fell of because the bridging was too thin. I made some changes to it like making it so that the lions face would not be cut out and the NBA logo would not be cut out. I also changed the design of the Nike logo into a Kyrie Irving logo because I thought that it would look way better, I also added the numbers 24 and 8 on the top so that it had more light coming out. After that I started thinking about finishing, my plan was to just use the paint markers to color the different logos. And I wanted to paint the kyrie logo side black and do some whit highlights around it. After two days I got my design, and I painted it and spared a layer of clear varnish to protect it. And that was the deign process of my lamp. If I was to take this class again, I would probably think more carefully about what I want to put on and what designs would work better, I would also think more about finishing. If I had more time, I would have painted the lion side as well and painted each side with acrylic paint. A tip that I would give to future student that would take this class is to think more carefully about what you want and not what takes the less time to do because the design is yours and you should always put things that you want. I would also tell them to use maker case because it is way easier and takes less time. This is the whole process of how I made the lamp and what I would have done if I had more time.

Utensil Challenge

Part 1: During this utensil challenge my partner Larry and I had to create a new utensil to eat a specific food better. First we brainstormed foods that are hard to eat, then we created and sketched utensils that can help us eat the food. We sketched 4 different utensils to eat different foods. For example we created one for eating a taco. I thought about this idea because when you eat a taco the toppings always falls out and it gets very messy. So we designed a plate thing to hold the taco so the toppings don’t fall off. Another utensil we created is a rib cutter. We came up with this idea because we thought that when you eat a rib you have to use your hands and it gets messy. The third idea we had was a heat resistant finger gloves for chicken wings. Because my partner told me that when you eat a chicken wing it is always too hot to hold with your bare hands, so that’s how we came up with this idea. The fourth idea we created is a popsicle holder to hold a popsicle because the popsicle always melts and it gets sticky. Although we came up with so many ideas I don’t think that they are very divergent because most of them solves the problem related to messiness. And next time I think that we should think of more different foods that have different problems with them.

Part 2: A useful feedback we got was “why can’t the chicken gloves be a full glove ?” This feedback does not apply to us because we chose a different utensil because we thought that we could not think about any more versions of the design. Another useful feedback A change we did make is the we added stoppers at the top of the utensil because my partner Larry said that the blades might slide off.

Part 3: The strengths of our rib cutter utensil is that it is easy to use and it is also comfortable to hold. To use the utensil you just have to slide the blades accordingly to the size of the rib than you just cut the meat off the bone and eat it. The weaknesses of the utensil is that it might be a bit heavy and the blades might fall off. Because our utensil is magnetic we have to use metal to make the utensil and if it is fully made out of metal it might be a bit heavy, also the blades are magnetic so if you use too much force it might fall off. And if we use stronger magnets it would be harder to slide the blades.
