Unbroken

Unbroken:

The book Unbroken by Laura  Hillenbrand reflects on the journey of Louie Zamperini’s influential life. Louie was the fastest man in state and became an Olympian, Louie was in his prime age. However, the deadliest war in history overturns the Life of Louie. Soon, Louie will face magnificent danger and will experience the greatest adventure of his life.

Central ideas:

1. Even in the hardest tines, there can be joy and relief.

2. The acts of resistance help you gain the knowledge of dignity, ambitions, and perseverance.

In humanities class, we learned how to identify central ideas. Throughout my book, I realized how much struggles Louie experienced his life. When he was young, he went through great depression and abuse, he was also a victim who had to face horrible tortures during WWII.

What really inspires me of Louie is his positive mindset and solutions he come up with in order to earn the joy and success he wants. From the information I earned from the book, I came up with a central idea that reflects on the dedication Louie puts into running in order to deserve accomplishments and joy. Another central idea is on the positive mindset and attitude Louie shows in harsh environments to not lose hope and dreams.

In humanities class, I learned to find key topics that really matters for Louie and how that can effect Louie in several different ways. Above in my “Cause + Effect” page, I’ve included important topics throughout the book and how that effects Louie’s life. In the book, there were topics such as

All three of the topics I’ve identified contributes in writing my central idea because it really emphasizes on hard work leads to the success you deserve and also how never losing hope even though you’re in a hard environment can give you the accomplishments you deserve.

During humanities class, we learned the meaning of descriptive passage and how words can be really impactful. For example, in the book unbroken, words like “bombing” give me the idea of damage, pain, and ruthless. Above, I’ve included some powerful words that were identified during reading the book and what meanings and impacts the word has.

After showing the relationship, I went back to my book to find 4 strong quotes that really support my descriptive passage. After finding 4 strong quotes, I was able to write a strong central idea on how war can bring huge damage and pain.

In humanities class, in order to make our central ideas more clear and strong, I learned how to research on the web useful questions such as how did WWII end for more clear and detailed informations that contributes and influences me to restate or add on to my central ideas.

Some of the information I earned from the web were the rescue in the ocean, the violence of Japanese, and how WWII ended. The questions I asked supported my central idea because I was able to use those information as to never losing hope and to stand strong for yourself no matter how much pain and damage others give you.

HUMANIST OR NOT?

Am I a humanist?

I give 5/5 to the following factors: Potential in human beings and Classical world. The reason why I gave potential in human beings 5/5 is because I am Christian. As a person who is religious, I believe with the idea that god put unlimited potential in people and that humans can achieve anything with their own ability. Also, I gave classical world 5/5 because like the fact that people in the renaissance started to travel to learn new ideas.

I give 1/5 to the following factors: Emphasis on humans, Religion, Secularism. As a person who believes in the concept of religion, I really disagree with how humanists concentrated more on people and not putting a lot of attention towards god. Also, I absolutely disagree with religion because even though Catholicism was still important in their lives, but humanists were forming a solitary life. To clarify solitary life, the terms of individual thoughts and expressions increased. Equally important, I really disagree with secularism where it is the way opposite of religion. Even though I like how secularism means understanding the worth of living, it only has a bit of faith in religion and is basically just making their own decisions.

Overall Score: I am 52% Humanist.

Slaughtering with the Lamb

In this short story of Lamb to the Slaughter, includes a person vs person and internal conflict. Firstly the text “Went forward to kiss him” give us an impression of how much Mary Maloney loves her husband. Another quote I found impactful was “He did an unusual thing.” with this quote tells the readers that the situation currently happening is unusual and helps the story to slowly start approaching to the climax. Equally important, the quote, “I’ve got something to tell you.”,  is also extremely impactful as it serves to incite the person vs person conflict and builds up to the climax.  In addition, the text “So I’ve killed him.” also displays person vs person conflict since Mary Maloney has killed her husband as the story reaches the climax. Also, the quote, “Keep things absolutely natural” is really important, because it helps the story to continue to intensify and it also shows Mary Maloney’s internal conflict since she needs to control her emotions by convincing herself that she is innocent. Lastly, the quote “Mary Maloney began to giggle.” is the perfect conclusion because the evidence of the weapon has been eaten and Mary Maloney can’t be arrested. My background is made up of dark colors because the story is a murder mystery and to let the reader to get a sense of what kind of story this is. The picture I used helps the reader understand the story and matches the dark background vibes.
