Blog Post 5: Analysis of a Photograph

1.

A. Aaron Siskind purposely takes close-up photographs, meaning the photo has excellent clarity. Through this, we can infer that Aaron Siskind is trying to close on his pictures to enhance the emotions and perspectives towards the picture.

B. Aarons Siskind expresses his abstract photographs through a distinctive contrast, dark tones that provoke awkward and mysterious emotions, and a variety of shapes that cannot be clearly identified.

C. Aaron Siskind may be trying to express themes like sadness and loneliness by using colors like black and grey, which symbolize danger, and the patterns of the object, which provoke a puzzling and intimidating rhythm.

2. As a viewer of this photograph, I believe the suitable name of the photograph is “Broken”. As mentioned, the dark tones provoke dangerous emotions, the shattered object, and cracked surface convey mysterious and awkward feelings, and the rough texture from the cracks and friction of the surface provoke loneliness and separation. These factors contribute to titling the artwork “Broken.”

3. Aaron Siskind expresses his photographs through abstractness. In the image above, the distinctive colors and shapes of the shattered objects show a clear contrast between the grey surface. Aaron Siskind also shows distinctive contrast between objects and surfaces through the shadows and dark lines outlining the objects. The photograph’s tone is dark, setting an unpleasant and dark mood. The colors black and grey symbolize dangerous and lonely emotions, proving that the artist’s intention for the artwork is to provoke depressing emotions. Also, we can identify a rhythm expressed through the black objects and the cracked surface, conveying feelings of mystery and awkwardness. The photograph has a very closed-up perspective on the subject, which helps viewers understand the texture of the black objects. It looks smooth, but the surface looks rough; we can indicate it is rough because the surface has cracks and the surface has high friction. This provokes loneliness and separation.

Annie’s Journal

During the early stages of the revolution, my character Annie is a member of the wealthy families who are supplied by Diaz- worst autocratic president- for 27 years while stealing land from indigenous people who work everyday outside in the burning heat of Mexico just for their families to be financially stable. As the Revolution progresses, One day, Annie was looking out her window seeing poor workers and indigenous people begging for a change but getting brutally slaughtered as a response. Annie full of shock, realizes that reality is an ugly place for the poor and realizes her selfishness and unforgivable attitude as an upper class towards Mexican Citizens. Annie starts to question herself on why wealthy families are stealing and from the hardworking poor workers and changes her perspective on the revolution.

At the last stages of the Mexican revolution, several deaths were left in cold blood just to end a bias autocratic president, form equality between the upper and lower classes, or reestablish rules for poor workers and indigenous people. Overviewing this decade long remarkable journey, Annie has some questions on what if she stayed with the wealthy families and what if Pancho Villa was elected president. However, Annie still believes that she has made a successful decision on transforming into a soldadera and standing for the rights of indigenous people and poor workers.

Unbroken

Unbroken:

The book Unbroken by Laura  Hillenbrand reflects on the journey of Louie Zamperini’s influential life. Louie was the fastest man in state and became an Olympian, Louie was in his prime age. However, the deadliest war in history overturns the Life of Louie. Soon, Louie will face magnificent danger and will experience the greatest adventure of his life.

Central ideas:

1. Even in the hardest tines, there can be joy and relief.

2. The acts of resistance help you gain the knowledge of dignity, ambitions, and perseverance.

In humanities class, we learned how to identify central ideas. Throughout my book, I realized how much struggles Louie experienced his life. When he was young, he went through great depression and abuse, he was also a victim who had to face horrible tortures during WWII.

What really inspires me of Louie is his positive mindset and solutions he come up with in order to earn the joy and success he wants. From the information I earned from the book, I came up with a central idea that reflects on the dedication Louie puts into running in order to deserve accomplishments and joy. Another central idea is on the positive mindset and attitude Louie shows in harsh environments to not lose hope and dreams.

In humanities class, I learned to find key topics that really matters for Louie and how that can effect Louie in several different ways. Above in my “Cause + Effect” page, I’ve included important topics throughout the book and how that effects Louie’s life. In the book, there were topics such as

All three of the topics I’ve identified contributes in writing my central idea because it really emphasizes on hard work leads to the success you deserve and also how never losing hope even though you’re in a hard environment can give you the accomplishments you deserve.

During humanities class, we learned the meaning of descriptive passage and how words can be really impactful. For example, in the book unbroken, words like “bombing” give me the idea of damage, pain, and ruthless. Above, I’ve included some powerful words that were identified during reading the book and what meanings and impacts the word has.

After showing the relationship, I went back to my book to find 4 strong quotes that really support my descriptive passage. After finding 4 strong quotes, I was able to write a strong central idea on how war can bring huge damage and pain.

In humanities class, in order to make our central ideas more clear and strong, I learned how to research on the web useful questions such as how did WWII end for more clear and detailed informations that contributes and influences me to restate or add on to my central ideas.

Some of the information I earned from the web were the rescue in the ocean, the violence of Japanese, and how WWII ended. The questions I asked supported my central idea because I was able to use those information as to never losing hope and to stand strong for yourself no matter how much pain and damage others give you.

PD4 Blog post

My idea for the phone holder came from the problem that my phone needed a safe, and clean space to be put. My first idea was to make a hole from the pocket to the base of my holder. This made it so that I could charge it efficiently, though it didn’t match the requirement size standard in the DX page. Because of this, I needed to improve and ended up making a 80 mm by 25mm pocket of wood to fit my phone perfectly. The proportions were just right, meaning my phone wouldn’t move violently around.  The base was then crafted into a 110mm by 35mm plank, refining the balanced position. I decided on wood thickness being 5mm. On the outside, I added the apple design, because I wanted to indicate that my phone was made by apple.

Problems that I encountered throughout this process was matching the right sized fingers, as wrong measurements, wrong spacing, or the wrong number of fingers, would cause the remake of the panel. I was then met in a step in which I had to include fingers to my panels, I accidentally added the wrong number to each wood plank which resulted in me remaking/redoing the panel. However, I decided to try the undo button in Fusion, to go back to where I made my mistake. I then made sure I  had the correct/efficient amount of fingers the second time. Through this, I learned to use rectangles, circles, triangles, and tools including mirror, spline, offset, and rectangular and circular patterns, and how to incorporate them into my own design.

My advice for future students is to be patient if your fusion work doesn’t export to light burn. I had a problem where my design was denied, and couldn’t be converted. I showed the teachers and ICT what was happening but they all didn’t have a solution, which delayed my work for 2 days. Fortunately, I decided to continuously restart my computer. I was then able to export my fusion work to light burn and was able to finish my laser cutting. If I could go back and do the class over, I would go for mastery, though I got a meeting because the sides of my base were popped out. I regret this, as I would have definitely made sure this error didn’t occur if I did product design a second time. One thing I would definitely change about the course would be the lack of 3D printing. We got to do modeling and even laser cutting, but never printed our models. I think 3D printing would be interesting, as it offers a unique experience to middle schoolers that uses the entire design lab more.

Animal chair!

Here is a cool photo of my cool animal chair!

1.  My biggest success was to finish my animal chair, it was very nervous at the start since it was first time for me in my life for the first time! But after, I felt that this was very fun.

2. Skills I learned or developed were to be finding recyclable sources and to be using them. I also found out that I learned or developed to make things very well. For example, making shapes on a cardboard using a scissor, or to be reusing tape!

3. If I did this again, one thing i would do differently is to be way more better at preparing, planning and organizing, since this project started as a back up plan for the arcade thingy, I had no time to prepare and had to do things in a rush every class.

3. Overall, I think this product was successful because in a less amount of time, I was still able to reach my goal of finishing this animal char and I also learned new skills to design things!
