Going Back to the Past to Save the

Cuban Revolution Journal. What changed and what didn’t?

What changed:

After the revolution, there were a lot of changes. firstly, Castro established an education and literacy program, that pulled up literacy to nearly 100%. He even made a universal healthcare program, which still stands today. Moreover, the society in Cuba became more equal. Unlike Cuba when Batista was in power, Castro shared lands with poor people. Even though middle-class Cubans lost their land, other poor Cuban’s life went way better.

People who wanted to keep their money left Cuba. As a result, almost all the professors and skilled workers left Cuba.

What stayed the same:

The economy didn’t go better. Cuba was still relying on sugar or other big countries like the U.S. or USSR.

There was a labor camp and Castro killed anyone who opposed the revolution or new government to keep his power. It was similar to how Batista kept his power. Using force.

Was the revolution worth it?

No. Compared to the sacrificed lives and hard work Cuban citizens have done, there wasn’t a lot of changes happened. After the revolution, it is undeniable that society for poor people went better, but only poor people got the advantages. Moreover, the economy didn’t go better, and still had a dependency on sugar. This led Cuban citizens to leave Cuba and move to the U.S.

What Happened During the Cuban Revolution?

1952, after Batista’s military coup, Batista held power in Cuba. During Batista’s reign, Cuban citizens’ lives were harsh. Only a few people had all the money and power. The majority of people in Cuba were starving or suffering from hunger. Moreover, the economy and land were controlled by the U.S. People wanted freedom and to end the dictatorship. Under the young lawyer, Fidel Castro’s leadership, people gathered to overthrow the Batista’s government. In that process, many events happened, and our video introduces the key events that happened during the Cuban Revolution with entertainment. Including how those events affected Cuban citizens and even the society.

The Tear of Jews

My book is Night, written by Elie Wiesel. The book is focused on World War II, and how Jews were treated during that time. This book is about the life Elie lived as a Jew during World War II. In many concentration camps, Elie faces different hardships. and find a way to overcome it. Waiting for the time to escape from the camp.

In every single concentration camp, he went to, there was harsh punishment and torture.

Most of the narrative parts describe his feelings in concentration camps.

It shows the way how Juliek fought against segregation and hate for Jews.

Most of the causes and effects were related to the terrible environment Elie was situated.

Are You a Humanist?

Firstly, humanism was a renewed belief started in renaissance, 14th to 16th century, that  every individual have value, and does not impacted by class or family. I think I am a humanist, because I also have a same belief as humanists in renaissance time period. I believe that all the individuals have power to achieve their goal, and ability to overcome the class and family. Also, another main concept of humanism was learning what we call humanity now and throwing questions to discover profound meaning of philosophy in ancient Greek and Rome. Like how humanist learned things, I am also learning humanity in school. When I have questions and want to find out deeper meaning and more detailed facts, I find books in online or buy it to learn more. Overall, I agree to all the main elements of humanism, so I am absolutely a humanist.

June and June

The story I choose is Tuesday of the Other June by Norma Fox Mazer.

  1. I used almost the whole story, but typically I used page 1, 3 and 7 the most.
  2. This story is called Tuesday of the Other June by Norma Fox Mazer.
  3. The concept of the poem is about internal conflict June is having. Throughout the whole story, June.T was always getting bullied by another June called June.M. The bullying started in the swimming lesson in Tuesday. When the bullying started to get harder and harder, she  started to have a dream of herself revenging to June.M in the night. Paying back what she did to herself. Kicking, punching and grabbing her like a dog, shacking. After the few days having those dreams, and when she finally determined to revenge her, she suddenly realized what her mom told her. Be good, be good, be good my Junie. If you smile to the world, world will surly smile back. This shows that she is struggling with her desire. She knows that revenging in a same way June.M did is bad, nonetheless she wants to revenge her.
  4. My poem shows how the main character is struggling with her own desire. First one is “My dream, kicking, punching, grabbing her chin like a dog. June.M.” And the other one, My mother, smiles at me, be good, be good, be good my Junie. If you smile to the world, world will surely smile back.
  5. Artworks –>

1. The demon and the angel:

The demon represents her desire, wanting to revenge June.M. The angel represents herself knowing that revenging is bad, and she should not do it.

2. The background:

The background has divided into black and white. Black part represents that bad choice June.T is trying to make, and the white part represents the good choice she can make. So the colors are divided into black and white.

3. Light and the girl:

The girl shows June.T, struggling with her own desire, and the light help enhance the emotions and confusions June.T is feeling.

4. Font:

I choose the white neon font, that can fully show the hollowness and doom, June.T is feeling.
