"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious" - Albert Einstein

Final photographs

Above are my final photographs that I took that were worthy of my choosing. I decided to put them in the order above because it separated the young adults from the young children. I wanted to focus on the occupation of the subjects in my photographs. the young children obviously don’t have an occupation but I wanted to capture the innocence of the children. This connected with my statement of intent in which I sated that I wanted to capture peoples occupation. In the top 3 photographs you can clealy see the occupation of the subject in the photograph. Also, I wanted to make sure that the subject was the main focus of the photograph. To do this I edited them so that the color scheme emphasises the main subject in the photograph.

This is my favorite photograph out of the 6 that I chose to be my favorite photograph. The subject is standing in the middle of the pavement and he is holding a garbage bag. He is wearing a bright red suit which stands out in the midst of the background. I edited the photograph so that the man in the red stood out more and was the main focus of the photograph. This created an interresting contrast between the background and the man. The background being more dark and dirty and the man being more bright. The foreground of teh photograph is calm with very few movement and objects obstructing the view. The background is more chaotic with motercycles and people obstructing the veiwers view. Also, there is more movement. The red man in the photograph is in the middle ground with nothing being in the foreground. This creates  a unique perspective.

This is my least favorite photograph. The subject is sleeping on his motorbike while wearing a yellow meituan jersey. I edited the photograph to saturate the color and change the contrast in the photograph in attempt to make the subject stand out. while I did make the man stand out more he was still in the midst of the background. The main subject of the photogrpah is the motorcycle in the foreground. I tried to take the photo in a birds eye perspective in a another attempt to capture the man more effectively.

1.Explain How your own images link to your chosen artist’s images.

These photographs used different techniques that Henri Cartier-Bresson used in his photographs. for example, He normally takes photographs that are unintentional and unstaged shots. I also used this technique, most of the people that I was photographing had no idea that they were being taken advantage of and this led to more authentic and realistic shots. This also connects to my statement of intent in which I stated that I wanted to explore the human condition. The unstaged photographs helped show the human condition more  effectively and gave the photographs a sense of realism.

3.Why did you put them in that particular order?

i put them in this order because it separates the photographs into people working and people not working. This let the viewer organise their thought and better understand what I am trying to portray. The photographs of people not working are more light hearted and the poeple in them look like their relaxed. The photographs of people doing the job are more sadder. the separation of the two types of photographs helps preserve the atmosphere which they create.

4.What are the overall strengths of these images

I think I successfully captured the occupation of the people in my photographs. This directly connects to my statement of intent because I successfully showed the human condition in most of my photographs.

5.what skills have you developed and how applied them?

I think that my photographs have good composition in them. They all have clear subject and I think I use negative space well to divert the viewers attention to the main subject. I had to crop some photographs because there were more distracting elements that took away from the photograph.

6.How have you developed as a photographer – What did you learn from your previous tasks

I have developed as a photographer because I have developed an eye that can look around and find something interesting to photograph. before I had a mindset in which I should only take a photo if something spectacular happens. now I realise that even the simplelist things can be photographed and appreciated.

7.Something that works well about this/these images is…

something that works well in these images is that they all have a unique outlook on life. Some are sadder and more melancholy, while others are more happier and relaxed. This large variety of images connects to my statement of intent because it provides different examples of the human condition.

8.Something I need to develop further is…

something that I need to develop further is lighting. Some of the photographs have one tone of lighting that affect it in a negative way. this undermines the photograph. Next time I will try to look for better places where different types of lighting are more prominent to camp and wait for pedestrians to stumble across.

9.What are you looking for in your nest set of images?

Instead of finding people to photograph I will camp at a really interesting place and wait for people to come to me.

10.What would you do differently next time? How would the photo improve as a result?

I would try to incorporate more facial expressions and others features of the face. while my photographs  show many buildings and other architecture this sometimes undermines the subject making them seem more in teh background and not the main focus of the photograph.

– tone. his photographs use alot of tone to create texture and make a photograph more dimensional

The work of Henri Cartier-Bresson | A photo essay — THE PHOTOWALK

I chose this image because it was exactly what I want to capture I my photographs for street photography. It uses props and the background to show that the old ladies are selling different foods on their street stall.  The photograph provides a window into the woman lives. struggles and experiences.

I think that value is the most important feature in this photograph. value adds depth to the photograph. the background had different tones and valeus of black and white which add a sense of dirtiness to the photograph. also the ground is darker then teh rest of the photograph which influences how the viewer looks at the two ladies.

I like how the photographer was able to zoom out and capture the whole stall and the two ladies. if the photographer had just zoomed in on one lady then it would look totally different. When zoomed out the viewer and look and into the lives of the two women.

I will adapt my style to try to replicate the photograph. I will try to zoom out to capture the background to make the photograph stronger and to give the viewer an insight into the lives of the people that I photograph.

Statement of Intent

The social/cultural issue that I want to explore within my photographs is the human condition.

I want my audience to feel empathetic and sad when they see my photographs.

I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs that emphasis features of the face. These features might include a business suit.  I also want the background and props that the subject has to reflect the persons occupation.

Happy

This photograph firs my statement of intent because it reflects the theme of lack of opportunity. I decided to focus on an endless amount of opportunity in this photograph. I showed this by having a positive expression (happy) on my dads face while a warm light reflected off of his face. I decided that I needed a more redish light after I took a few photos in which I just used a phone flashlight. I then decided to use a lamp instead of a flashlight. I also made my dad change out of a grey hoodie because it did not match the color scheme of the photograph. it was too bright and it drew the viewers attention to the shirt instead of my dads facial expression, which was the point of the photograph.

Hope

This photograph fit my statement of intent because it reflects the theme of lack of opportunity, but instead of a lack of opportunity this photograph was meant to show potential and hope, an endless amount of opportunity. I showed this by using the lighting to show a part of my dads face because while I was experimenting on the him I realised that I could capture his facial expressions better if i positioned the light at an angle. I also made my dad change after I realised that his grey shirt did not go with the lighting or the background, nor his skin color.

Sadness

This photograph fits my statement of intent because it reflects the theme of lack of opportunity. This photograph is meant to show the sadness of not having the opportunity to do something. after some experiments with the angle of the photograph I decided that I needed to look down on my mom. this was to evoke pity from the viewer, like they were looking at a beggar. The photographs that I took looking up or at my mom made it seem like was just sad and there was no other reason. I turned down the brightness of the lamp because I did not want to capture my moms full face.  The photographs that I took that were brighter had a more jolly fell to them and they did not portray my theme of lack of opportunity. When I dimmed the lamp and you could not see my moms full face it helped show the theme more.

The composition of the photographs helped push the subject out. the background supported the subject and no props got in the way of the photograph. I wanted my viewers eyes to go straight to the face of my subject. I don’t think that there are any major distractions in each of the photographs. however in the third one with my mom, I think that I should have made her change because her grey shirt draws the viewers attention from her face. I think that I portrayed my intent well and people could see that I was trying to show a lack of opportunity. when people look at my photographs I hope I think they will have a positive feeling when looking at the first 2 photographs, however  I think that they will have a negative feeling when looking at the 3rd photograph.

Red Photographs

The theme that my chosen 3 images all have is that they all are positive. This corroborates with my statement of intent which is to create photographs that show lack of opportunity. These 3 photographs reflect my statement of intent but in a more positive way. instead of showing a lack of opportunity I tried to show potential and opportunity.  This is shown in all 3 of my photographs because my dad is staged in a way that shows relaxation and ease. He looks unconcerned and happy.

In this photograph I made my dad lie down with his hands around his head. This was meant to show that he was relaxed. I also made him smile and look up into the ceiling to show the audience that he has something to look foreward too. He is not staring at the ground, but instead smiling and looking hopefully at the sky as if he’s excited about whats to come in his life. I set the iso of my camera to a lower number to create a calm and cozy atmosphere. The lighting and his checkered red jacket helped enforce the image that my dad is relaxing and does not have care in the world . the color scheme in the photograph is warm because only light shades of red and orange are featured in the photographs. I angled the light to hit my dads face from the left for a chance for the audience to infer on what beyond the photograph. My hope was that they would think of a campfire which symbolises good times, which reinforces the idea that my dad has not a care in the world. I took a photograph from a longer distance away so that I would not catch the smile lines and wrinkles on my dads face. This was so that he would look younger which is associated with having more opportunity and potential.

something that I need to further develop on is the lighting. If I made the photograph lighter I think that it would have been a better photograph. it would have emphasised my dads clothing and and facial expression.

In this photograph I had my sit up and smile at the camera. the smile was meant to be nonchalant as if my dad was with some friends or having a good time somewhere. He looks like he’s staring at a friend or someone he enjoys spending time with. I zoomed out of the photograph in order to try not to capture my dads wrinkles and smile lines. This gives the idea that he is young and has ane ndless amount of potential. Also, the background looks like it has white trees. this is meant to symbolise the growth and prosperity, reenforcing the idea of potential and opportunity. the white of the trees helps the color scheme of the photographs. it matches with the white on my dads jacket so it does not seem out of place. I turned the iso of my photographs down in another attempt to hide my dads wrinkles and smile lines while also expressing features like his smile and nose.

something that I need to further develop on is the lighting. If I made the photograph lighter I think that it would have been a better photograph. it would have emphasised my dads clothing and and facial expression. it would have also allowed the viewer to see my dads happiness clearer, which helps the photograph show opportunity and potential.

\

In this photograph I posed my dad in a way that I imagined a person deep in thought would pose like. I made my dad stare at the camera as if he was analyzing it, giving the audience the impression that he is intelligent. I took the photograph at an angle at an angle because it made it seem like my dad was staring down at them which reenforced the idea that he was smart. This image is meant to portray someone who has already reached there potential. I angled the light on my dads left side to emphasis his eye. The jacket that he is wearing looks very clean and goes with the color scheme. This is meant to show that my dad is well off and does not need to worry about his basic needs. The light is meant to be a lamp that my dad is using to read a book. that is why he looks so focused and composed. The hand that my dad leans on shows the viewer that he is somewhat bored. also, the light reflects off of his fingers which are now shiny and danty. which is meant to show the viewer, again, that he looks well off and rich.

I think that next time I do this i will focus on the lighting more. I think that if I changed the lighting in all my images they would ahve been more powerful and would have portrayed my theme more effectively. for example, they would have shown my dads facial features and facial expression better. both of those things are principle in portraying my theme.

Green

These are my green photographs that I took. The main difference between the green and the blue photographs are things like focus, camera angle, and how it portraits my message with is lack of opportunity. These photographs were more thought out and they were able to capture my dads face more effectively. I initially planned and sketched out most of these in my story board, so i was had a clear idea of what i wanted in these photographs. The blue photographs also capture the facial features on my dads face more then the green ones. the audience is able to see my dads wrinkles and smile lines more clearly because of the angle the photograph was taken and that there is no blur.

Blue photographs

I decided to focus on emphasising the the facial features of my dad. I tried to capture the smile lines and wrinkles. I used a warm, bright light because it worked well with my dads skin tone and it was able to create different tones of light across my dads face. I made my dad put on a red checkered jacket. Prior to this he was in a grey ISB hoodie which made my pictures look wrong and the colors did not match with the atmosphere. I chose to take a picture in my room because of color of the wall paper. The color of the wallpaper helped keep and maintain the color scheme and it also helped emphasis the different tones of light in some of the photographs.  I have taken these photos in the style of Steve McCurry. Alot of his photos have color schemes that are consistent through the photograph. He uses color to point out features in his subject which the audience would not have noticed.  I was influenced by Steve McCurry becaue throughout all of my photographs there is a clear color scheme and no colors that stick out.
