I Survived The Mexican Revolution

My name is Isabella Rodriguez. The last 10 years of my life have by far been the scariest moments of my life. Because for the last 10 years Mexico had a revolution. A revolution in which people were willing to kill their own people for power. This was the Mexican Revolution.

Was The Mexican Revolution Worth It?

I believe the Mexican revolution was somewhat worth it although the people of Mexico were forced to take sides and fight one another. The people who were not on the political party were merely fighting to get what was their back. Many things changed over the revolution like people perspective on their respected leader or the leaders they thought were great were no longer considered great because once they had power they went back on promises or they tried to make a dictatorship. However a lot of things stayed the same. Although the leaders were continuously changing throughout the revolution all the leaders were the same once they had power they were ready to sacrifice their own people just to keep it. The Mexican revolution makes you realize that when power is involved people will do anything to get, they will sacrifice their people and betray them for it. The Mexican revolution wasn’t worth for all the lives lost, but it was worth that the people were willing to put their lives on the line for something they were fighting to get back.

The Mexican Revolution that lasted from 1910-1920 was the revolution of fighting back against the dictatorship and unfair rule of the leaders of Mexico. The Mexican Revolution started because Mexico’s president Porfirio Diaz was unfair. He took land from the indigenous people and gave it to foreign landowners. Which meant Mexico’s land was mostly owned by foreigners. Also, the wage gap between the rich and the poor increasingly grew bigger. So a man named Francisco Madero wrote the plan San Luis Potosi which essentially criticized Diaz’s rule and called for a revolution that was planned to happen on November 20, 1910, at exactly 6 pm. Soon enough the revolution did happen and Diaz was forced into exile and Madero rose into the presidency. Although the people believed Madero was going to be more refined than Diaz he wasn’t. Franciso Madero made many false promises to the people of Mexico. This caused a particularly important man Emiliano Zapata a very important revolutionary during the revolution write the plan of Ayala which denounced President Madero. Soon after that Madero was betrayed by his general Huerta and was assassinated. After General Huerta betrayed Madero he then became president of Mexico. Later in the years Villa and Obregon grow conflict, in April of 1915 the battle of Celeya takes place. The battle of Celeya  was the official  between Villa and Obregon. However in the end Obregon wins. And a few years later Venustio Carranza becomes president of Mexico .

The first born crime

It’s Trevor Noah: Born A Crime by Trevor Noah is a well-illustrated autobiography about the struggles and challenges Trevor faced as a ‘colored’ child living in South Africa. Throughout the book, Trevor is faced with many different challenges due to the racist and unjust government that was in place while growing up. As Trevor grows older he starts to realize the many flaws and cracks in the system which Trevor thought was right. Trevor soon realizes because of this unjust government, kids like Trevor were taught to hate themselves. Although the law says something should not be done does not mean that it is right, this is a big idea that I found was developed throughout this book. During the time Trevor was a child races were mainly segregated because of the racial policies that were in place. One of the worst crimes that could be committed was race-mixing. Although the law is saying you can not race mix it does not mean people will agree with these laws. In the text, it says “Race mixing proves that races can mix- and in a lot of cases want to mix.” This shows that the law isn’t fair nor is it right for any one in South Africa. Another big idea that was developed throughout this book is that the discrimination and unjust government in South Africa made people who were not just of one race feel that they could never be accepted. Born A Crime is written through the lens of a ‘colored’ child who was living in South Africa when it was illegal to have any mixed-race children. Because of the unjust government Trevor along with the few other ‘colored’ children in South Africa felt as if they always had to change who they were to fit in because they could never be themselves. Anytime they tried to fit in with a group they were either not black enough or not white enough. Born A Crime is a book that shows a deeper and new way to look at racism and discrimination. I recommend reading this book if you like to learn about a little bit of history whilst having an entertaining story along the way.

Central Idea:

This page was a process page after our first lesson of learning about themes and central ideas. I started the page with just having my central idea and question for our book club. Throughout the unit I returned to this page to further develop the page with some evidence and also character development.

Exploring multiple big ideas at once:

On this page I developed two different central ideas where I gave different ideas from the book to support my central idea(s) then I made a connection between the two central ideas and added a piece of evidence to further support my central idea.

Process Page:

After we learned some new ideas during class I decided to use some of those ideas to track my think for my own novel. On this page I developed a big idea I felt was going on during the book, next I copied down one of the central ideas I had developed earlier on. I then decided to come up with a theme that I felt connected with my big idea and my central idea. Lastly, I wrote about some character development I saw going on during a certain part of the book.  The pink post it note is one that I had posted in my book that I felt helped support my central idea.

Narrative vs. Informational:

On this page I used the idea of Narrative and informational to track some of my thinking with the book. For the narrative part I wrote down some key ideas that were being said throughout the book. During the book if they start talking about some historical events that need some background information after the chapter there will be one or two pages that will give you some background info  which can help you have a deeper understanding of what’s going on.  On the post it note earlier on I wrote down a question and later on I came back to that question and answered based on what I had discovered reading further on in the book.

Cause + Effect:

Using the idea of cause and effect, I decided to use only one cause with multiple different effects. I also gave some reasoning for causes and the effect to further prove them. On my top posted note I wanted to further develop my cause and effect, so I decided to try and create some good effects that came out of a bad cause.

Making Connections:

I chose this page because after we learned of this idea in class it helped me make connections with some big ideas I noticed over the course of my book. It helped me work visually because I am able to see all the multiple big ideas and start to make different connections between the ideas. And then support them with evidence.

Finding My Inner Humanist

Am I a Humanist?

To better understand  some of the beliefs of the Renaissance, we were tasked with making an infographic about Humanism. Making our Humanist renaissance infographics, we had to show what we thought were humanism’s core beliefs.  A humanist was a person during the renaissance who promoted individuality, learning, and ancient roman and greek culture and ideas.  Am I a Humanist?  Pretty much. I agree with most of the beliefs humanist have but some I’m a bit skeptical about. For example I totally agree with individualism and that people shouldn’t be judged based on their class or status but by their achievements. One the elements I’m a bit skeptical about is Secularism. Like I said in my infographic I do agree that one thing shouldn’t be the center of everyone’s life and that we shouldn’t have to learn things only on that one topic: Religion, but to some people that is a big part of who they are or their identity. So I think there should be more of a balance between Secularism and Religion. But overall I think Humanism is very eye opening and  most of their beliefs are pretty standard and good beliefs. Which is why my total score is 95% Humanist.

Mary Had A Little Lamb

This found poem was made by using different words or phrases from the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl. This short story is about a man’s wife named Mary Maloney, the antagonist, who is facing some internal conflict which results to her killing her husband with a leg of lamb that she then cooks in the oven. Afterwards, that Mary has some external conflict while she tries to make sure no one figures out she killed her own husband. Mary Maloney puts on a false act that convinces the police and detectives, the protagonists, that she is not the murderer. Then Mary convinces them to eat the leg of lamb that Mary had used to kill her husband.

In this found poem I created I focused on the external conflict that Mary was faced with. The type of external conflict Mary was faced with was Person vs. Society.  Mary must convince everyone else that she didn’t kill her husband and that someone else did. However, this is a battle that Mary wins because at the end of the story Mary convinces everyone to eat the lamb, she used to murder her husband. In my found poem I tried to use words and phrases that would show the conflict. I mainly used words from the last page and some from the pages before it for example “It’d be a favor to me if you’d eat it up” or “Please eat it.” I did this because I feel like it really showed the external conflict. One place that I feel like I really showed the conflict was from paragraph 118-130. These paragraphs show the conflict where Mary has already convinced them that she didn’t kill her husband and she is now trying to get them to eat the evidence.

In my artwork I drew a black background and in red outlined letters I wrote “Lamb to the” and then around my artwork I wrote Slaughter. In my artwork I included 2 lambs and blood splotches. The 2 lambs representinnocence and purity, just like Mary did at the beginning of the story. Also, he lambs stand for what Mary used to kill her husband, a leg of lamb, and the blood splotches represents uneasiness and the aftermath after Mary Maloney killed her husband.                                                                                 .
