“Patria o Muerte!” (“Homeland or death”). The origin of this motto was derived from a speech by revolutionary leader Fidel Castro to commemorate the workers and soldiers who died in the La Coubre explosion on March 5,1960at the harbor in Havana. This event was the aftermath of the Cuban Revolution that happened from July 26,1953– January 1,1959. In this video we will be talking about some of the key events during and after the Cuban Revolution: Batista seized power with a military coup, Castro on trial, Castro came to power, and the Missile Crisis.
We will also be discussing the question: Was Fidel Castro’s violent uprising worth it?
“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” is a non-fiction book by Rebecca Skloot. This book talks about how a poor black tobacco farmer Influenced medical development around the world. Scientists know her as HeLa, but the woman behind the cells is Henrietta Lacks. She was a black woman with cervical cancer has cells that could reproduce indefinitely and reproduce out of the human body. These cells were taken without her knowledge and became invaluable to medical research: the first “immortal” human cells grown in culture.
Here are the central ideas I came up with in my book:
Here is how I thought of them
DESCRIPTIVE PASSAGE
We learned how to analyze descriptive passages, I chose a descriptive passage from my book and looked for details as pieces of evidence that could support the big idea that I came up with (Racism and segregation were a part of society).
EXPLORING MULTIPLE BIG IDEAS AT ONCE
I conceived of two central ideas while reading the book:
I collected evidence/supporting details to support my claim, and kept on gathering evidence as I read.
CENTRAL IDEA
As I continued reading, I came up with a new central idea: HeLa cells helped with medical Development in disease treatment and the study of human cells. I found multiple pieces of evidence across the book, such as the development of the polio vaccine and new discoveries in cell culture like cell fusion, to support my evidence.
DISCOVER AND ANALYZE
I used the claim consent is very important in medical research, and gathered evidence that I could analyze and use to support my claim.
am I a humanist? by Niuniu Wang [STUDENT]
This found poem was made from the short story “Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl, the sentences/words are taken from pages 2,4 and 6. The story talks about the protagonist Mary Maloney having an external person vs. Person conflict with the antagonist Patrick, who is also her husband. The conflict of the story happens in paragraphs 35 to 49. Patrick told Mary that he was soon going to leave her, when Mary heard the news she was surprised and could not tolerate it, so she smashed Patrick on the head with a frozen lamb leg and killed him. After that, she knew she wasn’t prepared for the consequences, so she tricked the police into destroying the murder weapon. At the beginning of my found poem “I’ll give you money” and “you’re looked after” is the part where Patrick is leaving Mary and what he had said, “Her first instinct” “not to believe any of it” “She couldn’t feel anything” is where Mary could not tolerate what Patrick told her. From “A leg of a lamb to “the noise” is when Mary killed her husband, and “She came out” to “So I’ve killed him” is her reaction to her action. At the last part from “she knew quite well what the penalty would be.” to “Patrick Maloney’s dead” shows that she regretted her choices and included the protagonist and antagonist’s names. The design in the background of the found poem is a dead man and a leg of a lamb which shows the conflict in the story.
