A portrait is specifically a shot of a person

selfies are portraits because they do depict one or more people in a photo However they are bad portraits

in a portrait it should be focused on a person usually just upper half can include masks or other items but nothing that completely obscures the person

A good portrait is one that clearly shows the person focused in. With lighting to clearly show the emotion or thing the person is trying to portray.

No a portrait can not consist of a close up of a hand it must have at least the upper half of them in view with their face.

As long as the photo has the upper half of a portrait it is a portrait. Even the mushroom grown portraits I showed before were still portraits no matter how hard it is to see it if it has a picture of there upper half in the main part.

It is possible to represent someone through things they are not present in, such as things that represent who they are in objects. But They are not portraits, the person needs to be present in the photo for it to be a portrait.

A portrait can be as many photos as they want as long as the upper half of someone is the main focus in the image
