1st set street photography evalutation

Explain How your own images link to your chosen artist’s images.
How do they tell a story?

Many of their photos show an overexaggerated face of strong emotion, that of rage or loneliness, same with my own, only in slightly different ways to show it, like a wide shot of a man alone; all of my and his photos are black and white with very heavy lighting and heavy grain.  many of them tell a story through their face, and their clothing, and because of the over-exaggeration you can make a story yourself

Why did you put them in that particular order?

no reason

What are the overall strengths of these images

They provide clear emotions as well as a vintage look, contrasting lighting adds depth to the images as well.

what skills have you developed, and how have you applied them?

I have developed more close-up skills, and editing skills. I have never done black and white photos before for the most part, so it was difficult to find pictures I deemed good enough to make black and white.

How have you developed as a photographer – What did you learn from your previous tasks

I have started editing more and caring more about angles, before I would just try to get thee subject the best I could not thinking about the surrounding space that most of the time took up the majority of the photos.

Something that works well about this/these images is…

Better lighting, It was hard to find actual good lighting, and because the images have no color lighting becomes much more important. Also more animals, animals can have much more interesting expressions that seem harder to identify.

Something I need to develop further is…

My lighting skills, using light more to my advantage could greatly help my photos as well as more close up pictures of people.

What are you looking for in your next set of images?

More close ups of people, asking people for photos, less architecture more people and animals.

What would you do differently next time? How would the photo improve as a result?

Maybe bring a light and or an actual camera, and ask people around.

Statement of Intent

I will take Very close up photos using fibinochi spiral  with grainy photos and black and white, trying to use extremley contrasted photos, very heavy lighting, I can achieve this by taking images with light on only from one side, and upping saturation through photoshop as well as the grain, most inspiration is from the movie the lighthouse and Daido Moriyama

Artist

Daido Moriyama, he focuses extremely on heavy lighting and keeping the focus more you one side of the photos, he relies heavily on lighting most of his photos being in black and white, capturing usually and extreme emotion, heavy tones of black, grey and white. Usually overrexaggerated features.

Bruce Gilden

Another photographer using black and whites, but feels more sc ripted, the scenes being very cinematic and not as rapid and sudden as Moriyamas, much more methodical, as well as heavy lighting and heavy shades to show the expressions, most photos of more solomn people, the shadows over there indents on there faces adding emotion and unique storytelling

Statement of intent Portrait

The title of this project is Shunyi Express

The societal/cultural issue I want to explore with my photographs is classism

I want my audience to feel Disgusted and feel an almost dream-like sensation from the lights, like when you are going to the airport really early, and you are tired, and all the lights are passing you by.

I will get inspiration and develop my ideas by looking for photographs that show dim and dirty areas in bright cities and dirty areas right next to big developed areas such as many places in Hong Kong.

Intro to Portraits

A portrait is specifically a shot of a person

selfies are portraits because they do depict one or more people in a photo However they are bad portraits

in a portrait it should be focused on a person usually just upper half can include masks or other items but nothing that completely obscures the person

A good portrait is one that clearly shows the person focused in. With lighting to clearly show the emotion or thing the person is trying to portray.

No a portrait can not consist of a close up of a hand it must have at least the upper half of them in view with their face.

As long as the photo has the upper half of a portrait it is a portrait. Even the mushroom grown portraits I showed before were still portraits no matter how hard it is to see it if it has a picture of there upper half in the main part.

It is possible to represent someone through things they are not present in, such as things that represent who they are in objects. But They are not portraits, the person needs to be present in the photo for it to be a portrait.

A portrait can be as many photos as they want as long as the upper half of someone is the main focus in the image
