Frozen

The book, Lost in the Antarctic, written by Tod Olson, documents the journey of Shackleton and his teammates to the North Pole. During the early 1900s, the Antarctic was a mystery to most people. The protagonist, Ernest Shackleton, and his crew of 28 were the first men to make it across the unknown frozen land. Their quest was not successful, the ship was trapped unexpectedly in the ice in the middle of the Weddle Sea, and the team was forced to leave the ship. Living under the extreme weather, the team was lingering on the edge of death every day and night. The only living things to be seen were the seals and penguins that soon became the meals of the men. And yet, none of the crew was to give up. To find out the stories and barriers over the course of their journey, is it worth the sacrifice? You would have to read this book yourself!

To start off, the first page to introduce is my central idea page. On lesson 2, we learned that texts are complex. To keep track of our idea we need to keep adding on to the page while reading. So, on this page I used box and bullets to keep track of the central idea “The journey was hopeless, but the team did not give up” and added on with quotes and connections.

Furthermore, this is another page that I was using the same technique to keep track of my idea. However, on this page I was keeping track of the theme idea “Sacrifice is required on the way to success.

To add on, we learned about connectome on lesson 7, to look for connections in different part of the story. I listed out some challenges that the protagonist might face in the book during class. Later on, after I finished the chapter, I wrote a brief summary of the chapter. Then, I connected it with some of the ideas and developed a new idea.

Finally, the last page to present is about setting. In lesson 8, we learned that descriptions can help us as reader get insight for ideas in the book. On this page, I’ve listed out some descriptive words that appeared in the chapter, and made connection with one of my central idea.

Overall, I enjoyed this book alot. And I recommend this book to reader that has less experience with non-fiction books like me, because the illustration of characters are very vivid, and it is based on an interesting real life story that is worth researching about.

Robbers of Past?

Have you ever felt guilty when you’ve stolen ideas from others? Well, some smart guys from the Renaissance did the same thing!

Humanities Education
Giving myself a score of 19/25, so I am 76% of a humanists because I enjoy learning humanities and I am good at proposing Ideas from past experiences and putting it to practice. For instance, as a kid I loved listening to the story of the three kingdoms. I’ve obtained many principal in my life from the story, and it helped through many problems. Adding on I totally disagree with the feudal system because I believe that it limits people’s desire to improve and look ahead in their life. Lastly, there is an old saying in China that says a man should be like the sky making progresses and working hard without stopping. So I believe that our destiny is depended on ourselves, instead of praying for grants we should work by ourself to reach goals. Overall I agree with humanism ideas, and I appreciate how their thoughts established the foundation modern ideology.

Stealing Words

The found poem above was taken from the short story “Lather and Nothing Else” by Hernando Tellez. It was told from the perspective of a barber, and he was the protagonist in the story. In the short story the barber was secretly a member of the rebellion. One day, the leader of his hostile force came to his barber shop for a shave, his name was Captain Torres, and he was the antagonist. It was a great opportunity for the barber to murder Captain Torres, and in this passage the barber faces an internal conflict of whether he should kill Captain Torres. In the beginning of my poem it says, My hands shaking like a regular murderer, the razor kept descending right near the great vein.” This shows how the barber had a great opportunity to kill Captain Torres. Adding on, the next sentence says “A murderer or a hero? I asked myself.” I think this was a good sentence because it shows how he was really struggling internally, questioning himself whether he should kill Captain Torres. And the last part of the poem says “How many of ours had Torres sent to their death? How many had he mutilated? But does he deserve to be killed?” In this sentence he thinks of his companions in the rebellion force that was killed by Captain Torres, but he asks himself if it’s fair for Captain Torres to pay for it. Finally in the drawing below shows a razor (a knife that barbers use to give a shave) with blood on it, this drawing can represent the barber’s imaginary of killing Captain Torres.

My Cardboard Arcade Project

  1. Skills that I developed is being safe using materials and tools. Especially the use of knives, I often forget to close it up.
  2. If I did this again I would use hot glue more effectively, because we used a lot of it but there was still parts we didn’t get to.
  3. Overall,  I think this product is unsuccessful because we can work on the look of it and not leaving gaps between color papers.
