Identity-Present

When I do this picture, I think about how I can connect my hobby to my favorite animation. So, I put the movement of the volleyball with the character of the animation; when showing the picture to the viewer, it can tell them about my hobby and also make them happy.

Identity-Set 1

Photographer: David Hockney

Analyze his photo

These images use a collage technique, breaking the subjects into multiple pieces. This technique emphasizes movement and emotion, presenting a lively view of the subjects rather than a static one. Each image captures some kind of the same expressions and movements of the subjects, which makes the different related to each other to make a whole picture. The use of contrasting backgrounds highlights the subjects. The overlapping images create a sense of depth, making viewers engage with the artwork on multiple stages.

Justify my choice

The fragmented style used in the photographs valuably shows movement and emotion, allowing viewers to feel the energy of the skaters and the different expressions of the second subject. By showing different perspectives, the photographer encourages viewers to create their own pictures. This approach helps people connect more deeply with the images and understand the subject matter better.
These images inspire me to experiment with how breaking down visuals can tell more complex stories. I plan to try out some techniques, such as collage Techniques, taking multiple angles and expressions and combining them into one piece. The next one is layering, using transparency and overlapping images to add depth.

Part 2: Critique

My favorite image in the photograph of the photographer

The subject of my photograph is the man who is turning on the ice. The setting of the picture is in an ice ring; I think, according to the clothes that man is wearing, it is in the 80s China. The background of the picture is white, and the outside of the ice ring has a fence that protects people who don’t know how to skate. The character in the picture is a man who wears a blue jacket and sports pants. The man is good at sports and concerned a lot about appearance because his hair was a good look at that time and the clothes he wore had traces of being ironed. He is ice skating on the ice, I like the pose because I also can do that.

STYLE & GENRE

The picture is colored and fragmented; I think the contact is high because the blue clothes make high contact with the white ice at the back of the man.

PHOTOGRAPHIC ATTRIBUTES

My eyes are drawn to the place that is fragmented, the difference of the picture that is fragmented

Lines

We can see some curve lines in the picture. The limbs of the skaters create smooth lines that highlight their graceful movements. And the geometric appears in the image is divided into rectangular sections, which create straight lines that contrast with the fluid poses of the skaters.

Patterns

The skaters appear in different poses, showing the rhythm of their dance and the fragmented style creates a grid pattern, adding complexity to the image.

Shapes

The bodies of the skaters form natural shapes that suggest movement and balance. We can also see the rectangular section in the picture. Each part of the image is a rectangle, contributing to its overall structure.

Colors

The main colors are shades of blue from the skaters’ outfits, creating a calm atmosphere. That makes the full tone of this picture cold. The dark skates contrast with the lighter background, adding depth to the image.

MEANING /INTENT

This picture makes me feel energetic because I used to ice skate too, so I imagine the feeling when I skate on the ice that makes me feel relaxed and energetic. The light has a cold tone light that makes me feel like inside the ice ring is cold, but let me remember the happy time I spent in the ice ring. The man makes me feel free because at least when he stands on the ice, he feels free, and all of the bad things in his head go away. And all of those things added together make me feel free, energetic, and relaxed.

I think the photographer wants us to see more details when we do a movement in ice skating because ice skating is a beautiful sport. I want the picture to give us energetic feelings. I will try to make my movement more professional and add the things I want to take. Maybe it will become energetic.

My Contact Sheet

Hutongs-present

The people that stand there expression can convey emotions such as warmth, pride, or focus. The subject is positioned within the frame, which can draw attention to them. Good lighting can enhance the mood—warm light might convey a welcoming atmosphere. The color of the picture is usually warm tone, so it evokes energy, while the muted tones in the picture show calmness. Therefore low contrast can feel more subdued. In the background, the woman is making food for the people who are waiting. The signage or decor can show the Chinese culture. This picture is about the daily life of the woman; it shows her day on the Hutongs. Engaging imagery makes viewers ponder or feel connected to the subject. The photograph can evoke feelings of nostalgia, joy, or curiosity. It can make traditional Beijing person think about their childhood. It may offer a glimpse into a specific culture or lifestyle and help different people from different countries understand different perspectives.

I think my photo is good because it used to be on a good wall.

Identity-Introduction To Portraiture

What’s a Portraiture?

Usually, we think a portrait photograph takes pictures of people; it is a genre focused on capturing the likeness, personality, and mood of an individual or group. I think selfies are portraiture. Portraitures should include a person inside, and I think if it has a person inside, it should not have something that can’t be contained inside. This kind of photograph can represent people’s identity without them being present in the picture because due to their photograph style and their tone, we can know what’s their identity and personality like; it doesn’t need to be a single picture because a person’s identity can’t be express by a single picture their feelings change so their style of photograph change so if you want to know a person’s identity you need to watch them for a long time.

Working the sense – Hutongs

Marie Laigneau’s photography has a lot of features to make her style unique like she likes to capture people’s unguarded moments that emphasize realistic and sincere emotions. Her pictures always describe the interaction with the main character and show the different actions between person and person. The second thing is her pictures often reflect buildings, streets, and public spaces that take an important space in the narrative. She integrates local culture and gives people a feel of society; this is what I need to learn when I go to the hutongs. And she often uses the lines in the environment to guide the audience and strengthen the picture’s structure. Laigneau uses natural lights to add depth to her picture and strengthen the atmosphere; she uses light and shadow to protrude the important elements in the picture. She tries different angles to make the connection between the audience and the subject. She will change the color of the tone according to the emotion of the subject. This can help with the emotional impact of the work.

Evaluate one photo:

Shape: The subject’s face and position form an obvious outline, with the pointed lines of her jacket and the curve of her chin creating an interesting cooperation of shapes.

Tone: The contrast of black and white tones give the image a ubstable, atmosphere, with the subject’s face and features being the focal point.

Focus: The subject is in sharp focus, while the background is kind of blurred, guiding the viewer’s attention to her thoughtful expression on her face.

Repetition: The repeating vertical lines of the lighting and walls create a sense of repeating and visual interest.

Tone: The image has a relatively low-key, muted tone, with a mix of dark and light areas. The lighting appears to be rough, creating areas of contrast and shadow.

Texture: The rough surfaces of the walls and the different of textures from the objects lining the passage add a sense of visual interest to the image.

Repetition: The repeated perpendicular lines created by the walls and the parallel lines formed by the objects create a element of pattern throughout the structure.

Focus: The overall image is in focus, with little depth of field that keeps the main elements in the center of the clear picture, while the edges are little blurry。

Final Triptych-The Beauty in Nature

I want to create a joyful and happy mood for the audience; it works because flowers can make people relax. When my friends see my picture, they also feel relaxed. My success criteria are when my friends or other people see my picture, I will feel comfortable and happy without pressure. Clive Nichols gave me the final touch; she explored me through her pictures. Her pictures make me feel relaxed and happy, and when I feel sad and I see her picture, I feel so glad. I discover the theme, Because my theme is to make people and let them see my picture to improve their feelings. I want to take this picture because the flower is an excellent thing that makes you happy and relaxed. The photographer also takes pictures of the flowers. I just see the date angle of the photographer’s and copy it to my picture. My picture will always be like the main thing I want to express will be in the middle of the picture, and I like to take picture for one flower in many flowers. I want the viewer’s to know I use a lot of effort in taking these picture. Still, let them understand everything has their beauty, even a small flower in a big pile of flower they are still pretty. If I have more time I want to try taking pictures in different floral arrangements, lighting conditions, or even incorporating more abstract to make my photo better.

Photo Analysis

By: Uta Barth

The lights reflected on the wall and the orange fence, and the photographer thought the picture would be interesting.

If I were the photographer, the photograph would be called “Golden Reflection” because it captures the warm tones and the interplay of light and shadow on the wall.

Line: The feature of the image is a mild horizontal line, it forms by the reflection on the wall. These lines lead the viewer go through the image , create a clam feeling.

Shape: the shape mainly showed the light reflected a square on the wall. They are geometry, make a compare between the smooth wall.

Pattern: There is kind of  a small pattern, mainly reflection of the square, it make a pattern. But i think there’s  mainly no pattern.

Texture: The wall looks like smooth and luster, and the sofa under gives another texture to the picture. The soft fabric and the smooth wall make a contract.

Tone: The overall tone is warm, the gold color made the dominance. The warm tone aroused comfortable atmosphere, makes people interesting.

Focus: The focus is on the reflect things and the wall. It makes the viewer’s attention on the upper part, emphasize lights but not furniture.
