Am I Humanist? by Wontaek Jo [STUDENT]
This project was about taking a look at the different aspects of humanism, and whether if I agree to it or not. Humanism is a belief that we have the ability to enjoy nature ourselves, and not let god be in our life too much. It turns out that I am not a humanists. To be exact, I am 36% humanist. Believing that we can live our own lives, doing what we want to do, is in my opinion a terrible thing to do. This is because sometimes in life, religion is the only thing that is holding us together. It prevents us from doing wrong, and lets us know what needs to be done, and why we need to do it. It is the boundaries in our society between sanity, and doom. Getting rid of that is like making us a lamb to the slaughter. It makes us fall into a hole that we can never escape. As much as I believe that straying away from religion is a bad idea and totally disagree on that, I do believe that god put unlimited potential in human beings. God gave us talents to achieve goals, and to change society, and I think that it is important to use that potential for the right purpose. It also forced us to take responsibility for our actions, and figure things out based on scientific reason, rather than depending on one divine being to solve all our problems. For me, humanism is a thing with 2 faces. It sometimes disgusts me in life, because life shows me how much I need god, but it’s belief in human potential makes me work harder for the things that I want to achieve. It also taught me the importance of standing alone, and enjoying your life as an individual.
