Vision Statement

In my final project, I want to focus on abstraction techniques and street photography, the concept of working the scene. I want to combine the knowledge that I have about abstraction and combine that with the randomness and unpredictability of street photography. As for my main subjects, I want to focus on different locations around our school area such as staircases, classrooms, and etc. By changing the tone and lighting of the photos, I want to invoke a strong emotional response from my viewers. The title of my final project is going to be “Behind the Walls”.

Blog Post: Mindmap Version 2

This is my additional notes to the mind map. The first version of the mind map was created on a weird website, so it did not save. However, the screenshot of the first mind map is on one of my blog posts. This is ADDED to the first version of the mind map. This additional part explains my change in statement of intent, change in artist, and my mood board. Here is the midnmap.

Photo Safari – Blog post 6

This is the photo gallery above consisting of 12 photos each representing different elements.

This photo is for photo number 1. Comparing the image from above, and the image that I took, I think that this photo worked pretty well in emphasizing the same elements as the photo above. The photo is clearly divided into two equal sections, like the photo, and the two sections contrast in color just like the black and white sides in the first photo.

I am comparing this photo to the number two photo in the photo list. I think this photo captured the art element of tone and focus. The subject in the photo is clearly defined and the tone/color of the subject contrasts with the color/tone of the background. Using the elements of tone and focus, I think that the photo was able to emphasize the subject effectively in the photo, and I think that comparing the second photo to the photo that I took seems pretty similar because they use similar art techniques.

I am comparing this photo to the third photo in the picture. The third photo above features many different dots/lines that are scattered around the photograph. I wanted to convey the same idea/structure using legos. I chose legos because they have a variety of shades/colors, and when you alter the photo tone to greyscale, the different shades of color turn into different shades of grey, which I think is aesthetically pleasing.

This is photo is the photo that I am comparing with the fourth photo on the board. The two pictures both use repetition to convey a rhythm in the photo. Besides that, I wanted to compare this photo that I took to life as well. Many things in life repeats itself, whether you like it or not. Sometimes you have good days representing the white parts in the photo, and the black representing the hard or difficult parts of your life, and as you go through this phase of hardship, you become stronger in all aspects progressing on to the next stage in life, or in this case, the next volume of your life.

I am comparing this to the 5th photo in the photo safari. This is a picture of the ISB walls, divided my two black lines. In this photo I tried to convey a sense of abstraction by adding greyscale as the filter to strengthen the contrast between colors. The photo also has a innate sense of abstraction in it as well, since the holes in the metal walls creates a sky-like pattern and a rhythm in the photograph. To me, the juxtaposition of the two lines makes the two lines look like two tall building beside each other, and the grey wall looks like the sky. Another interpretation that I could make with this photo is a pond. Without the two lines separating the wall, the grey wall looks like a river, and a pebble dropped into it, creating a ripple, and a rhythm in the water.

I am comparing this to the 6th photo in the photo safari. This is a picture of one of the pictures that I had took when I went to 798 on the weekends. This was just one of the artworks that they had in 798. I think that this is an appropriate picture for the 6th photo because the photo shows strong contrast of colors with the rainbow colors on the circle, and the white background that is the wall, just like how the black circle contrasts with the white background. Not only that, I think that this photo conveys a sense of abstraction by using different varieties and shades of colors and creating a rhythm out of all of the lines and the curves in the circle. For me personally, this reminds me of the neurological structure of the human brain.

I am comparing this to the 7th photo in my photo safari. I must admit that this is not a good photo because it does not use the different techniques of abstraction very effectively. For example, the reflection of the light from the ceiling (while reflection is an abstraction technique), does not play a significant role in delivering a proper message and it also does not help replicating the 7th image on the photo safari. While the lines, do seem to follow the same pattern as the patter in the 7th picture, the camera angle while taking this photo was a little bit bent. In conclusion, while this photo had a variety of abstraction techniques that could have made the photo a really good one if used correctly, was ineffective, and did not help the photograph convey a sense of abstraction.

I am comparing this to the 8th photo in my photo safari. In my personal opinion, I think that this was a really good photo that used the formal elements of photography to convey a sense of abstraction. Not only does the patterns and the rhythm of the photo match the 8th photo, I used the tone, and lighting to convey a sense of abstraction. The greyscale gets rid of any unnecessary colors that might distract the viewer, and I adjusted the lighting and the shadows of the image to enhance the contrast of the shades of grey in this photo.

I am comparing this to the 9th photo in my photo safari. This photo uses lines and lighting to convey a sense of reflection. Starting off, we have the light from the ceiling being reflected to the floor, and I feel like that also conveys a lot of abstraction in the photo because when you are taking a photo of a certain pattern, most of the times, you are not taking a reflection, but you are taking something that is already there. I think that this style of photo was a new and interesting opportunity to convey a sense of abstraction through reflection and use my creativity. One thing that I found interesting about this image is that if you put the color filter of this photo in greyscale, there is still no difference from the original photo. I think that is because the color composition of the photo consists of different shades of grey, so I think that changing the tone and the lighting to convey a sense of abstraction was not the best idea. One thing that I did do well though is that I adjusted the shadow levels of the photo so that reflection from the light could have a sharper shape, rather than just a blurry shape that does not look like anything.

I am comparing this photo to the 10th and 11th photo in my photo safari. The photos have a feeling like they are going up and I think that is the intent. I also think that this photo effectively uses different abstraction techniques such as tone and lighting as well.

I am comparing this photo to the 12th photo in my photo safari. This is QR code, and I adjusted the lighting to enhance the contrast of colors in the image. I also feel like finding patterns in organic objects is really interesting.

Definition

To me, an abstract photograph represents futurism by creating an illusional and subconscious world of reality, attempting to hallucinate the audience by taking photos that aren’t typically seen in our daily lives. I was able to get a lot of insight from the video on the DX page, and I want to give a simple explanation of abstract photography along with the definition. When you are drawing or painting, the world is your canvas and you are able to make and draw what you want and distort reality. However, when you are taking a photo, you are taking a picture of the world, and you cannot bend reality in a way to convey your message. Its like just pressing a button. So as time went on, different artists started manipulating the angles and the lens of the camera to distort the photo, and express their thoughts and emotions through abstract photography.
