"I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious" - Albert Einstein

Stranger than fiction

“Trevor Noah” by Trevor Noah is a autobiography about a “colored” child living in South Africa during and after apartheid.

Trevor Noah is a South African comedian and television host, best known for his role on “The Daily Show.” He grew up in a mixed-race family during apartheid in South Africa, which shaped his views on race and culture. In addition to comedy, he is an author, and his book “Born a Crime” tells stories from his childhood and the challenges he faced.

Central Ideas:

Racism and Injustice:

As a colored child Trevor experienced many racism growing up. In parts of the book you will find many injustice and criticism towards in apartheid system. For example in chapter 14, Trevor found the problem in the phrase “Give a man a fish” he stated that “talent alone would have gotten me nowhere, without Andrew(the privileged) giving me the cd writer(resource).-133” Also, Trevor  talked about the “Black Tax” which is a concept that racism/ poverty is generational. Through humorous stories Trevor explained many injustice of the apartheid system and South Africa.

Resourceful and education:

In this book Trevor explained many stories of Trevor and his mom. In chapter 5, Trevor explained the power of education with the fact that she had a better life because she learned english and became a secretary. Through out the book Trevor always valued the power of resources like education/ personal strength. An example of personal strength can be found in part 3. Trevor was one of the most poor kids in Sandringham High. He was also the fastest, he used this to earn some extra money.

Humanism Unplugged

Humanism is a belief that influences almost everyone, sometimes even without you noticing. I read many news about wars happening around the world and as I feel empathetic towards the people who is hurt I think of the concepts of humanism. I think about the concepts of how human rights are valued in humanism, how humans have the right to live without fear of violence. In times when I feel people are not treated with dignity and respect the humanist part of me takes over.  Even in daily life I find myself influenced by the humanism believes. When I face decisions like should I go meet my neighbors, I use the humanism way of solving this problem in stead of the religious way. I analyzed the situation and came up with a solution that I felt is the most logical instead of reading the bible. However, when I see humanists arguing with people who believe in religion I start identifying with both sides. The humanist part of me who believe in science can’t agree more with the humanist; the open minded, empathetic me understand the both sides. How people understand a problem, no matter small or big,  can be deeply influenced by religion/belief. Personally humanism shapes how I view the world but I still keep an open in all beliefs and religion.

Q1 Reading Reflection

I am currently reading mostly in my room at around 4pm.  I am starting to create the habit of reading, which is hard because I do not enjoy reading as much as other things. I read mainly english books.

My goal is to read 1 books per 2-3 weeks for the rest of the semester.

My side of the story black out poem

My Side of the Story

The blackout poem I created was based on “My Side of the Story” by Adam Bagdasarian. Click the first link to access the original story. I used Canva to create the graphics for my poem.

“My Side of the Story” by Adam Bagdasarian is a short story around the concept of family and justice. The conflicts in the story are both external conflicts between human and human. My poem identifies both conflicts, starting with a short explanation of the first conflict and ending at the falling action of the 2nd conflict. I used paragraph 7 to explain the 1st conflict between Skip and “I”, the protagonist. In which Skip stuck a piece of scotch tape on the main character’s head because he refuses to go play basketball with Skip. Then I selected short phrases and sentences to show the rising action of conflict 2. The protagonist felt that he had been wronged so he decided to go find justice. He ran to his mother that he believed would perform justice.  Then comes the climax of conflict 2. When the protagonist got to his mother’s room he found himself intruding into his father, not mother. I choose some dialogue and descriptions to show the tension of the between the human(protagonist) and human (father) external conflict.  I ended the poem at the end of the falling action of conflict 2. This leaves the readers space to think about the conflicts of the story and come up with their own ending.

The tape graphics show the start of both conflicts, the scotch tape on the protagonist’s head. The crime scene tape shows how the main character believed that he had good evidence to get his brother in trouble by bringing the tape (crime scene) to mom. The gavel and the word justice both represent the theme of the story, justice. Click 2nd link to see poem.
