Am I a humanist?
——————————————————————-
Humanists are hard to define at times. I think I would be somewhat a humanist, but I disagree with some of their ideas/opinions. Like the belief to depart from Christianity. I know, I know, Humanists don’t depart from Christianity. They just “use education to better understand the world while maintaining Christian beliefs.” But nevertheless, they become more distant to Christianity than some non-humanists. I do like the idea of individual control, to share knowledge, and love humanities class. As those are key points in humanism. would rank myself a 3.7/5 on the humanism scale because that is what I’m comfortable with
.
I chose: “Lamb to the slaughter”
The main conflict of the story is internal or “man vs self”
The story is about a happy woman who loves to help her husband. When he gets home, She is all happy while her husband is acting strange. Then her husband tells her that he wants to have a divorce for his job and to get more money. She is sad and goes off to make dinner. She then returns with a frozen leg of a lamb and kills her husband with it. Later in the story, she proceeds to lie and hide the fact that she murdered him.
I believe that the main conflict in the story is man vs self because she made the decision to kill her husband and throughout the story, it is shown that she thinks a lot.
A time where this happens is when the main character, Mary Maloney, Had thought to herself and made the decision to kill her husband. On [40], it states: “She lifted it out of the fridge, and looked at it. It was wrapped in paper, so she took off the paper and looked at it again. The Leg of a Lamb” This shows that while she was looking at it, she was having a mental conflict on what to do and whether to kill her husband with it. Later on [50], it states “She began thinking very fast. As the wife of a detective, she knew quite well what the penalty would be.” At that moment, she Thought of and made a plan to go to the grocery store in order to have an alibi. Because that is what she uses as an alibi later on like at
[90] it states “She told him, and he turned and whispered something to the other detective who immediately went outside into the street. In fifteen minutes he was back with a page of notes, and there was more whispering, and through her sobbing she heard a few of the whispered phrases — “…acted quite normal… very cheerful… wanted to give him a good supper… peas… cheesecake… impossible that she…” ”
This shows that by thinking to herself and deciding to go to the grocery store, she had an alibi and even tricked a detective.
In conclusion, it is evident throughout the story that the main conflict is man vs self as Mary Maloney made many decisions.
