Theme#1: The task of this page was to note down the theme(s) of the book. This page primarily reflects the harsh living conditions in the Japanese POW camps. I believe this page showcases just how hard life was for the POWs.
CENTRAL IDEA 1: The task of this page
was to note down the central ideas of the
book.
This page mainly covers WWII, and its harsh times.
The book that I read, and devoured was ‘Unbroken’ by Laura Hillenbrand, published in 2014. This marvellous book is based on a captivating story of an olympian who got deployed in the army of the United States of America in World War II. This book majorly covers Louis Zamperini’s (the protagonist) harsh life in Japanese POW camps, where he was held, tortured, and used for hard labor. Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a Literary Nonfiction book, which depicts the art of being resilient, smart, never giving up, and never losing hope. The pages that I will be using in this blog post are: 1.) Central Idea, 2.) Theme#1,3.) Perspectives(synthesis pg.1),4.) Informative Elements,5.)Cause and Effect(synthesis pg.2). The first Central Idea from my book that I would like to present is: Famine. “The average army or army air forces POW lost a staggering sixty-one pounds in captivity”(pg.146, Hillenbrand). Another quote that I would like to insert is: “Deaths from beating and malnourishment were common in Ofuna”(pg.147, Hillenbrand). Ofuna- Japanese POW camp. Famine was widespread in Japanese POW camps. Even officer rank POWs were barely getting to eat food. The Japanese guards were even stealing the food provided by the allied forces in relief boxes.POWs barely got to eat. The first theme I would like to bring up is: WWII. Chapter 5 onwards, WWII was majorly mentioned, and WWII was ongoing for the majority of the book, and in all of the crucial stages of the book.WWII was on-going throughout the book. It only seemed appropriate to make it as one of my theme’s. My second Central Idea: Brutality. A couple of quotes that I would like to insert are: “To abuse, enslave, and even murder a prisoner was acceptable, even desirable”(pg.151,Hillenbrand). “Phil’s new camp, Ashio, was far from plush. Ashio’s POWs were enslaved in a copper mine, in horrendous conditions” (pg.158, Hillenbrand) Brutality was normalised in Japanese POW camps. Guards liked to be brutal, and inhumane. They were sadists. Which is wrong. My Second Theme: Abysmal living conditions in Japanese POW camps. A couple of quotes that I believe are appropriate: ” Louie was forbidden to speak to anyone but the guards, to put his hands in his pockets, or to make eye contact with other captives”(pg.147,Hillenbrand). “In this secret place, Japanese could, and did anything… “‘They can kill you here”‘ “(pg.147,Hillenbrand). The reason I’ve said “Abysmal living conditions in Japanese POW camps ” is because the situation was so bad at the Japanese POW camps that the slightest violation of a rule would result in a beating.
NARRATIVE+INFORMATIVE ELEMENTS: The task of this page was to showcase our understanding of narrative and informative elements. This page covers a wide variety of things, from Bird to Mac, to Louie.
PERSPECTIVE PG.(ALSO MY #1 SYNTHESIS PAGE): I consider this as a synthesis page because all of the events that are mentioned in this page are chronological. This page showcases how Louie,Phil, and Mac survived by the skin of their teeth from shark attacks, and etc.
CAUSE AND EFFECT(SYNTHESIS PAGE#2): All of the events mentioned in this page are in order, and are caused by one another, therefore I consider this as a synthesis page. The purpose of this page was to relate events to one another.
