Stranger than Fiction

Design by Chelsea Wang [STUDENT]

During the reading unit, “Stranger than Fiction,” I read the book “Just Mercy.” This book is written by acclaimed lawyer and social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson and provides readers with the stories of people who were wrongly imprisoned and Stevenson’s efforts to fight for their justice and freedom. It tells readers the struggles for justice and equality when people are in the face of an unjust criminal justice system.

This first page is about the thinking I did about possible themes, central ideas and social issues of the book. There is evidence from the text and thoughts and ideas I thought of with my book club group.

On the second and third page are the central ideas I thought of for “Just Mercy.” On the left is the evidence I found for each idea, and on the right are the thoughts and connections I have. One central idea mentioned in these notes is: “In numerous cases, the criminal justice system is unfair towards people of color and people who live in poverty.

The fourth page are the themes I brainstormed. Similar to the central idea page, I wrote down evidence from the book for each theme and connected my own thoughts and reasoning to it. One theme on this page is: “People should be all be treated fairly, no matter their skin color.”

The fifth page is about the narrative elements included in this book. I found many pieces of dialogue in the book, and they are not just from casual conversations, many of them have great meaning within.

On the sixth and seventh page are synthesis pages I made. The first is a perspectives page in the viewpoint of the author. I wrote down what I thought Bryan Stevenson was thinking and trying to tell us, and gave evidence to support it. The pieces of evidence I found present what I think the author is trying to help myself and readers understand. The second synthesis page I made is  cause and effect cycle. I connected the social issue of the book in to the cycle and explained my thoughts of the causes of this issue and the effects it brings. I expanded on each cause and effect there was until the many pieces from the book connected into a circle and made a cause and effect cycle. This page presents the author hinting that one event can lead to many possible outcomes and over time they become a cycle that does not stop.

Reflection of Humanism Upon Modern Society

Humanism is a way of thinking that puts yourself at the center. It believes that we should focus on our own feelings, and the connections we have with each other, rather than just following rules and religious beliefs. Humanism encourages us to think more and find meaning in our lives on our own.

Humanism is something that can be connected to many people’s lives, including my own. Humanism tells us that it is important to pay attention to our own feelings and understanding ourselves. This connects to me because I have always felt that no matter what is going on around myself, I need to focus on wether I am happy or not and what I care about.

Adding on, humanism also encourages thinking for ourselves. It teaches us to think more and not just trust everything we hear too easily. This means asking lot’s of questions and exploring many different ideas. I relate to this because, for one thing, I do not follow any religion. So whenever anything is said, it has always been wether I thought it was right or wrong.

In summary, humanism is a way of thinking that helps people understand themselves, think for themselves, find meaning in their life, and display the importance of human dignity and the pursuit of knowledge.

Found Poem Of Justice

The found poem is a project we did for humanities. My found poem is based on the story, “My side of the Story.” The author of this story is Adam Bagdasarian. This story talks about when the protagonist Adam wanted to show his brother (antagonist) the consequences of sticking Scotch tape in his hair. When Adam ran screaming to his mother, he ends up finding his father. Instead of his brother being punished, Adam is punished for being so dramatic about something so unimportant.

The conflict is a external conflict. Although it seems like a conflict between Adam and his brother and father, it is more like a Man vs Society conflict of the unfairness of the world and Adam not being able to get the justice he wants because the rules his father(the society) made.

My poem was designed like this to match the topic of the story. I the worlds I chose can express the unfairness and rage of the world. This is why I chose the dark background and the X in the middle of the poster. They are all signs of unjust.
