During the reading unit, “Stranger than Fiction,” I read the book “Just Mercy.” This book is written by acclaimed lawyer and social justice advocate Bryan Stevenson and provides readers with the stories of people who were wrongly imprisoned and Stevenson’s efforts to fight for their justice and freedom. It tells readers the struggles for justice and equality when people are in the face of an unjust criminal justice system.
This first page is about the thinking I did about possible themes, central ideas and social issues of the book. There is evidence from the text and thoughts and ideas I thought of with my book club group.
On the second and third page are the central ideas I thought of for “Just Mercy.” On the left is the evidence I found for each idea, and on the right are the thoughts and connections I have. One central idea mentioned in these notes is: “In numerous cases, the criminal justice system is unfair towards people of color and people who live in poverty.
The fourth page are the themes I brainstormed. Similar to the central idea page, I wrote down evidence from the book for each theme and connected my own thoughts and reasoning to it. One theme on this page is: “People should be all be treated fairly, no matter their skin color.”
The fifth page is about the narrative elements included in this book. I found many pieces of dialogue in the book, and they are not just from casual conversations, many of them have great meaning within.
On the sixth and seventh page are synthesis pages I made. The first is a perspectives page in the viewpoint of the author. I wrote down what I thought Bryan Stevenson was thinking and trying to tell us, and gave evidence to support it. The pieces of evidence I found present what I think the author is trying to help myself and readers understand. The second synthesis page I made is cause and effect cycle. I connected the social issue of the book in to the cycle and explained my thoughts of the causes of this issue and the effects it brings. I expanded on each cause and effect there was until the many pieces from the book connected into a circle and made a cause and effect cycle. This page presents the author hinting that one event can lead to many possible outcomes and over time they become a cycle that does not stop.
