From Olympian to Survivor: The Story of Louie Zamperini in Unbroken

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a biography that illustrate the life of a famous Olympic distance runner, Louie Zamperini. The book begins with Louis’s childhood in early 20th-century America, illustrating his journey from a troubled youth to achieving his dream of competing in the 1936 Olympics. Shortly after, as World War II take place in America, Louie enlists in the Army Air Corps and finished many daring missions. However, his life takes a dramatic turn when an unexpected plane crash occurs, marking the beginning of his incredible journey as a survivor…

Below are some notebook pages from this unit that shows my thinking and insights as I read the book.

Firstly, after we learned how to analyze descriptive passage in class, I looked at some descriptive passages in the book and  decide to focus on the part that describe the plane crash. After analyzing page 98,99, and 100, I kind of found my first central idea: Surviving during WW2 was extremely challenging.

Next, I created a notebook page focused on this central idea to help me prepare for the upcoming summative. I had found seven pieces of evidence that support this central idea, along with a summary that explains how surviving during World War II was extremely challenging.

After that, during our humanities class, we learned how to make connections within the book, and I created this notebook page. As I delved deeper into the text and analyzed Chapter 35, I developed a new central idea: The impact of World War II continues to influence people’s lives for a long time.

Finally, after reading this book and creating all the notebook pages, I reflected on the central ideas I had explored and recognized a connection between survival and perseverance. From this, I developed a theme to summarize the book: Optimism and perseverance is strong enough to overcome anything, including life’s toughest moment.

Are you a Renaissance Humanist?

Humanism by Cynthia LIU [STUDENT]

Are you a Humanist? Do you believe that people’s social status doesn’t depend on their class? Well you might ask what is a Humanist, what does Humanist believe?  Thankfully, I organized what Humanist believed into 5 categories: Individualism, Secularism, Ability to control your own life, Interest of classical culture and Question everything. I also put a score of 1-5 next to each factor,  this means how much do I agree the statement, in total I’m 84% a humanist. This is why I give the score:

To begin I give Individualism a score of 4. This is because I agree this, but in real life, your social status will some how connected to your family, just like if your father is the president , then your social status will probably be high then a waiter (no offense ). This is inevitable.

Next, I give Secularism a score of 5. This is because I totally agree this, church and state need to be separate, or else every citizen need to have a religion, and doing things that are not reasonable.

Then, I give ‘ability of control your own life’ a score of 5. This is because I totally agree that we have the power to control our own life and not just let the God bless you.

After that, I give ‘interest of  classical culture’ a score of 3. Because this is really debatable, we don’t need to look at the past to understand the universe, but it’s also a good way to get inspirations, so I give it a 3.

Lastly, I give ‘Question everything’ a score of 4. This is because I agree that we need to ask questions to find new things and get new ideas, but maybe just not everything. So, I give it a score of 4.

Thanks for reading this. 🙂

My side of the justice

made with Canva

The found poem above is about the conflict of the story “My Side of The Story” by Adam Bagdasarian. This story is about author’s brother putted Scope tape on author’s head, but the author’s father punished the author and pull the Scope tape off, which is really unfair to the author. The conflict in this story is Person vs. Person, which is a external conflict. It shows the conflict between the author (the protagonist) and the father and brother. Meanwhile, it’s because the author really wants justice from the family, but the father didn’t give it to the author. Also there’s some conflict between author and the brother, because the brother put Scope tape on author’s head. In this poem I written the part where the father rip the Scope tape off, and a bunch of author’s hair fall off. Meanwhile, the brother are just laughing outside, which is a really unpleasant thing. At this time the author is really angry and hopeless, which I think is the climax of the story, so this is the why I choose to write this part. Lastly, you can feel hopeless and unfairness from the background I choose for the found poem, which is abut the conflict from the story. Hope you like the poem.
