Julia Margaret Cameron is a renowned and influential 19th-century photographer. She often takes pictures with a soft focus, and her photos tend to be close-up shots. Her photos were inspired by a lot of theatre, Italian painters, contemporary artists, and religious stories. She has taken approximately 900 photographs over the course of 12 years.

Her photos all feature light and shadow, with the dark areas typically displaying a maroon-like color, as the technique is quite old (dating back to almost 200 years). Her use of light is very well managed, given that there was not a lot of colored photography in the early stages of her career. Some of her photos can be softly focused and have a blurred look, which is particularly beautiful because it captures some movement that also reflects light through the model’s hair. This technique creates an ethereal and dreamlike effect, really special to her time. She also employs dramatic contrast of light, which adds a sense of drama and enhances the emotional impact on the viewer.
