Code Girls – 원준서 Junseo Won

Code Girls by Liza Mundy.

This book is focused to women that were Code Girls and contributed to America’s war and about their role, achievements, and how they were treated during WW2. During WW2, women had done a good job at breaking codes, but these days they are not mentioned as much as men. In this blog post, I’ll talk about 2 central ideas, argument, and cause and effect.

On this page, it states my first central idea of the Code Girls which was “During the World War 2, women were important but weren’t appreciated as men.” I thought like this because in the first part of the book, it’s key idea was about the Code Girls’ role and importance, but as it goes and goes, it always mentioned that “women were paid less than men” and  “they were treated differently”. So, I thought that they were important, but they weren’t appreciated. And this is also connected to my argument.

On this page, my basic argument is “Women were the true heroes of WW2″ which looks like a theme, so I developed my argument which became ” Women were essential to America’s victory” that is more specific. The main thing in my argument is if women were or weren’t essential to America’s victory however, I thought that they were essential. In the book, Navy also said “we need women to win” which means that they were important to America. In addition, this argument may be related to my book’s theme which is women were the true heroes of WW2.

On this page, it says about the cause and effect of my book. I was surprised because I didn’t know that war can make a lot of effects. Since this book is focused on women and the process of their life, almost of the effects were connected to the change of the women’s life quality. Basically, the society of women changed a lot, which led to women becoming more independent, feminism’s start, and getting a specific role in war.

Finally, I made my final central idea of this book, which is “Women were the true heroes of WW2 and they were essential to America’s victory. But these days they are unmentioned.” My central idea has developed by getting more information from my argument and the cause/effect. I think that my central idea is the common part and adding that they were unmentioned. If I summarize my book, it is a story of women breaking the codes.

Scotch tape’s Nightmare

(!!!In this found poem, the sentences looks like a perfect sentence but, it’s made by piece of 2~3words which are not in a connected sentence!!!)

This found poem is based on My Side of the Story by Adam Bagdasarian. (If you want more information about Found poem and Adam Bangdasarian, click each of them.)

In this story, the main character’s brother puts Scotch tape on the main character’s head. So, the main character goes to his mother’s room screaming, but in mother’s room there was his father. His father was strict so father got angry to him for entering there screaming and without knocking. Then, father asked him why he did that. So, he answered “Because Skip(his brother) put Scotch tape on my head.” That answer made his father to be more angry. Because the reason was not enough to make his father understand. Because, his father got more angry, father pulled off the Scotch tape, so main character’s fifty or sixty hairs was pulled off.

In this situation, I think there is an ‘external conflict’ between the main character and his dad(Person v.s Person). Because on page 4, under 3 sentences of [35], their is a sound effect described ‘WHAP!’. This sound effect means that father assaulted to the main character. And on page 3, father looks angry to him because he didn’t mind that the door was closed, and he didn’t think that his mother could be sleeping. Because of these two reasons, I think that it is an external conflict, person vs person, between the main character and his father.
