“Born a Crime” written by Trevor Noah, is about his childhood facing challenges to find his identity and belonging. Trevor Noah, a boy that lived during part of the apartheid South Africa, was born as a colored child. As a colored child, he faces racism and challenges to find his identity and belonging.
Being a colored child, there was limited resources for people that are not considered “white”. When he was in six grade, he went to H.A. Jack Primary, a government school. He was often caught between black and white groups, feeling sort of isolated from both sides. His lighter skin made him a target from black peers, while white peers viewed him as an outsider. This shows a divisions created by racism.
When he was small, he was struggling to find his identity, he had to chose weather to be “white” or “black” Trevor was in a white environment during school, but he thinks he tend to fit better with the “black” childrens because he was able to speak multiple languages in common, which made him fit more in the group. “I switched to a black one because I felt like I fit in more. I thought of myself as black, even though the world saw me as colored.”
