Stranger than Fiction

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is a true story about Louie Zamperini’s unique voyage through WWII. He went from troublesome child, to Olympic runner, to Air Force officer, to a prisoner of war, and everything in between. He lived through so much and shows just how much veterans went through to keep America safe.

World War II was especially hard for Air Force officers, which can be shown on page 50, where it says “For days, the captives were held on the airfield…as the Japanese made plans to execute them.” The Japanese officers were incredibly cruel towards POWs, but they were especially harsh towards officers because they were jealous of their stature.

Teamwork is crucial to survival, and Louie portrays this many times in the book. During his time stranded on the ocean, it says “All three were indispensable. Had there been only two, they couldn’t have pumped, patched an hit sharks” (pg. 122). The feat of staying alive while doing all these things would have been all too impossible for Louie if he was alone. He desperately needed his crew-mates to stay alive in this time of need.

At this point I was about half-way through the book and my focus on this page was mostly focused on WWII and the effects it had on Louie. This page was focused on helping our class improve our skills on finding central ideas and backing them up.

My themes page was very similar to my central idea page in that it was formatted the same and did the same thing as the previous page except for themes. This page was more diverse and my reasoning included more thought.

This page is focused on improving my skill in identifying narrative sections in my book as opposed to informative sections (as seen in the next image) and I spent a lot of focus on the beginning of the book more than the end of the book. I think this section is very helpful to create but not as helpful to read in order to understand it.

This section is an extension of the previous page and is designed to help me better understand the informative pieces of the book. I tried to use the whole book in this page and gained a much deeper understanding of informative write in literary nonfiction.

The cause and effects page was based around the stem that the POW’s started to steal from the Japanese. The page was to help us open our mind to the fact that multiple things help cause and stem from a single event. I realized that there are way more things that can happen because of one single event than I thought.

Am I A Humanist?

Am I a Humanist Infographic by Naomi Fisher [STUDENT]

I think based off of how I agree with what I wrote, I am 75% humanist. My infographic titled “Am I a Humanist?” has a list of traits that humanists had. Most of the time, if you agree with these traits, you are a humanist. Personally, I think I am not a humanist. This isn’t because I don’t agree with the concepts, but rather that I just don’t have a strong opinion about these things.

“Lather and Nothing Else” Found Poem

In my found poem based on “Lather and Nothing Else“, by Hernando Tellez, the conflict is internal, because the barber has to choose whether or not to kill Captain Torres who is a leader of the enemy. The barber is shaving Torres and knows that it would help people everywhere in the country to murder him, and it would be easy to, as he says in the story “I could cut his neck like this: Jab! Jab! I wouldn’t give him time to protest and since his eyes are closed he wouldn’t see the glint of the blade or the glint in my eyes.” But he knows that in the long run, it won’t be helpful, because then he would be condemned as a murderer and people would still die. He knows exactly how to murder Captain Torres but also knows the consequences and doesn’t know if it is worth it.

I think that my poem portrays this well because, while it isn’t super long, it shows that while Captain Torres is not a good person, he is not the focus of this story. The focus of this story is that the barber should kill him but it is incredibly hard for him to murder someone, because, after all, Torres is still human. We know that it is for the greater good that the barber would kill him, but also that killing is hard and the barber is unable to kill him. The conflict is quite clear in that through the second sentence you can see him fighting internally.

I chose the image of a man holding a shaving blade because the barber was shaving Captain Torres and was planning on using it as a weapon. I made sure it had a dark backdrop because of the fact that this story is very dark and to make sure the words stand out.

When you blog you create posts and posts are categorised according to your subject. Some categories have already been set up for you. If you need more categories you can add them as needed. It’s important that your posts have the following:

  • An engaging title – this should not include the name of the subject since this is referenced in the category.
  • Body – this is where you share your learning. This can include text, images, embedded videos from Dragons’ Tube or elsewhere. You should always consider how your post looks to your audience. Is it engaging? Do they want to keep reading?
  • Category – select one that has been set for you or add a new category. Posts can have more than one category e.g. Humanities and Myself as a Learner
