Stranger than Fiction

The book, “It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime”, is a autobiography written by the famous South African comedian – Trevor Noah. The book reveals the unusual childhood of Trevor Noah and also addresses many problems of South Africa, such as racism and apartheid. The book is written in a humorous tone that entertains the audience, and each chapter is a independent story about his childhood. Some of the central ideas including the harm and separation from racism (and trying to prevent them), resilience, identity (since Trevor Noah is half white and half black, so his identity is unclear). I want to extend on identity – since Trevor Noah is a mix, he kept having problems of which group he should belong in. For example, he got into the first class, but it’s all White people, which he doesn’t feel belong to. Therefore, he went to second class, since he felt more belonged with his Black friends. This can demonstrate that identity and how “I” identify myself is a big theme in this book.

Rewrite a passage from a different POV (Extension)

The task for this page is to write a scene from a different POV against Trevor Noah. I chose the part where Trevor was asking the other kid for Fufi (or Spotty). I tried to imagine the perspective from the kid, which he might also think that Fufi is his dog and Trevor stole it. I also matched some descriptions and dialogues in the story to make it match the scene. The good thing about this page is that the passage I wrote is reasonable and matches the original story.

Efferent and Aesthetic (L2)

On this page, our goal was to find some efferent places (places that gives real facts and information) and aesthetic parts (parts that provide beauty and feeling of something). I chose parts from various parts of the book, but it’s mostly in the first two chapters. The good part about this is that I chose dialogues that can strongly express the efferent and aesthetic parts, and has really nice descriptions and vocabularies.

Collect Great Languages (L4)

In this lesson, we’re supposed to find the definitions of the words being provided in the lesson video (which is adjective, figurative language, adverb, sensory details, topic-specific vocabulary), and then find sentences that is describing something/someone while using very fancy languages. The good thing about this page is that I organized my page into two parts, which is very easy to identify different parts. Also, I found really nice vocabularies in the chapter. I also gave examples of the different vocabularies we did, which will further help my vocab study. The dialogues I found will also help me with my further writing which I could use to make my writing fancier.

POV and voice analysis

In this page, we’re suppose to analyse the POV and voice of the story, which we can further even write the benefits about the POV and voice the author used. It reflects the whole book, which the whole story used similar POV, but the voice might change. The good thing about this page is that I analysed the whole thing very closely, and tried to find the deeper meaning and benefits of this use of POV and voice. This will further help my decision of use of POV and tone.

In this page, we’re told to introduce the author – Trevor Noah. We also need to include a picture of Trevor Noah. The good thing about this page is that I tried to draw a realistic drawing of Trevor Noah (though I didn’t draw too well). Also, I did extra research online using Wikipedia, and found about his whole life and the reason he wrote ‘Born a Crime’. I also found details of his life like his family and also his DOB, education, nationality and so on.

HUMANISM

In my opinion, I am mostly a humanist, where my family is non-religious and I was taught to believe in science. Throughout my early years, I learned about science and what was happening in real life and taught about how the Bible and God don’t have any evidence to prove true. My life was influenced by humanism too – I like to learn about science and history, which was proven true by evidence, rather than studying about religion, God, and Christianity. To me, evidence-based study is more interesting rather than religion. Also, I am very interested in music, in which during the music period, composers were strongly impacted by Humanism and affected by their music style. I am also interested in art, where I love to analyze art and admire artists. Artists were influenced by Humanism where they drew more realistic, which also influenced me I drew more portraits and realistic drawings instead of religious art. Overall, I have been influenced by humanism, which has made me a humanist.

Q1 Reading Reflection

Currently I am reading every night before I sleep. I am reading non-fiction, and the topic is about China’s geography. I am currently at a time where I only read 10 minutes a day so I have to read more. I don’t have the time to go to library, but I would like to got o the library so I could choose some more books. I would like other people to suggest more books to me because I don’t know what to read after I finished my book club book.

Specific: I will try to finish 10 books before December 13th

Measurable: I will record books I finish in my book chart recorded in Notion

Achievable: Yes;  10 books is a reasonable amount and I could read fast if I want to.

Black Out Poem Paragraph

The found poem I made was based with the words from “My Side of the Story”. I made my poem using Canva, and the graphics are all from Canva. The whole story was about a conflict between a brother and the protagonist, leading to an abuse from his father from not knocking on the door.

At the first page, I included a scotch tape and a human head, and put the scotch tape on the head to show that the conflict started from Skip (the brother) stuck scotch tape on the head. I also included two guys at the bottom to show that they’re siblings.

At the second page, I included two kids, on crying on the floor, one running while screaming, to show how the protagonist was screaming in the hall finding for the justice – his mother. Then, he opened the door, and saw his serious father, and was surprised because he didn’t expect his father to come here. His father was not like his mother, where he doesn’t care about the small stuff.

So, at the third page, after the protagonist told what happened. His dad became angry, and started screaming at him. I included pictures and graphics (all from canva) that shows somebody is angry. I tried to make all the graphic red so it shows how they are really angry, because this is a common way for comics and TVs to show how somebody is angry. I also included an old angry man, that shows what it looks like in the protagonist view.

At the last page, where the climax occurred, and the father abused the child, I included some graphics of adults abusing child, and also included a graphic a child crying in front of a child to show the effect of being abused. What I want to included was that abusing child is not right – it could leave a scar in the child’s heart and stay there forever. In China, there’s a law now that if a parent abused child, they will receive consequence, which also proves how abusing child can leave hard consequence.
