“Lost in the Antarctic: The Doomed Voyage of the Endurance” by Tod Olson is the story about the expedition of Ernest Shackleton to the Antarctic. The expedition is considered as one of the most well-known and the greatest expedition in the world. This book contains this incredible story and shows difficulties during the expedition in detail, so this book is very dynamic and interesting! I also liked some decisions Ernest Shackleton made when he was in danger.
Here are my notebook pages which shows my wonderful thoughts during I read this book. Let me share my ideas showing my notebook and you’ll get interested in it!!
It is the first central idea I found. Ernest Shackleton shows leadership by trying his best to save his cru from danger. During reading, I could find some dangerous situations and how Shackleton dealt with it.
In this notebook page, I wrote some of dangers as a cause and effect statement. These notes briefly mentions about how he got in danger and how he overcame it. These dynamic situations made this book more thrillingly and lively.
The second notebook page naturally led to the biggest factor in this book, which is harsh nature. The ship, the Endurance, also got serious damages and it got unusable. Harsh nature ruined the expedition and Shackleton’s plan, and put 20+men in danger. This book contains a lot of situations showing harsh nature.
During reading the book, I could find a theme, some central ideas, and some social issues. Those central ideas are from the part of the book which peoples were slaughtering whales to get oil and I came up with cruelty and selfishness.
Summary: This book is about a exciting expedition of Shackleton to the Antarctic. The book shows a lot of obstacles during traveling and Shackleton uses clever ways to overcome it. How Shackleton overcame the situation is the key point of this book. He is a born-to-be-leader and you’ll get to know why after reading the book!!
