Born a Crime – Blog Post

Book Summary: “Born a Grime” by Trevor Noah

“Born a Crime” is an autobiography by comedian Trevor Noah that talks about his childhood in South Africa during apartheid, a law that segregates black people, and a lot of other policies that are unequal. As a child born to a black mother and a white father, Trevor’s existence was illegal under the law of that time. This book is about Trevor overcoming obstacles using a humor way to tell us.

Theme: Never give up, even if your ‘Born a crime’

The central theme of the book is to stay positive even if you’re unlucky. Trevor Noah and his mother, Patricia, showed ways that refuse to be defined by their situation. Patricia’s raised Trevor with love and education, even though things are blocking in their way. Therefore, it shows the strength of their spirit.

Trevor used his identity with humor and creativity, to use it as a way to help himself which he is famous now, using et as a defense against bullying and discrimination. —whether among black, white, or colored communities—he still demonstrates resilience. He learns to find humor in hard ways, transforming the pain of being “born a crime” into strength and success.

Central Idea: Identity and Belonging

Throughout the book, Trevor is often described as an individual in a divided society. He shares how he learned while trying to fit in.

Conclusion:

“Born a Crime” highlights the power of strength against unequal things. The stories of Trevor and Patricia reflect love. Their lives tell that even if there is obstacles, life can be purposeful. In the end, Noah’s journey reminds us a that our situations do not control our future. But it defines who we are 🙂

Why I Am a Humanist

I am a humanist because I believe in four important ideas: individualism, secularism, education, and art. Each of these ideas was important during the Renaissance.

First, individualism means how important of being individual. During the Renaissance, thinkers and artists started to focus on human emotions instead of only religious topics. This change lets people share their unique ideas, which is inspiring to other people.

Second, secularism is separating religion. Many scholars in the Renaissance got knowledge through studying, which helped their science and philosophy. I think that secularism helps people to have different ideas to grow and helps us to better understand.

Education is also very important. During the Renaissance, learning was very important. People like Leonardo da Vinci and Galileo Galilei had advanced thinking, causing them to create scientific thoughts and philosophy. Education lets us to think d and learn.

Finally, art is a key role in Humanism. Renaissance artists like Michelangelo and Raphael used their creativity to make invention. I think art is the main thing for connecting with others and can inspire more people to believe in the beauty of art. In conclusion, I am a humanist because I think individualism, secularism, education, and art is the main cause that brought Humanism.

Desire

This Found Poem based on the story “button button” explores the external conflict within the text where the main characters struggled whether not to push the button to get $50,000 but a person dies at the same time. One example was when Norma said, “Suppose it’s a genuine offer” however, Arthur argued, “What would you like to do? Get the button back and push it? Murder someone?” This can show the intense of their argument. Another piece of evidence that shows it is when Norma clearly shows her greedy desire when she said, “50,000 dollars, a trip to Europe we wanted”. This can show how she does anything that benefits herself but disadvantageous others. This story also shows the clear characterization throughout. Mr. Stewart represents an ambiguous figure. He doesn’t show right or wrong clearly, but he is testing to see if they’ll take the money even though it means a people they “do not know” will die. He is more likely doing a wicked test seeking people’s reality. And the moral side which is Arthur that thought it is immoral to kill someone even though to get money. The graphic I included in the poem shows the two side “evil and moral” which I divided it into two parts. The one on the right side which is the dark side, represent the actions and words said by the evil characters Mr. Stewart and Norma, the red font makes a clear difference of the evil side and the bright side. The left side represents Arthur, and the green font represents his pureness.
