Myth and Ritual: Journal Entry

  1. The brainstorming process for this project, was a collaborative effort, because the end goal was for everyone to contribute to the story and we wanted to fulfill everyone’s liking. At the start, we chose a location, and then we decided to base the story off of the location, which was the Arctic. Since the Arctic is a cold place, we decided to choose one of main characters who possesses the element of ice. In addition to the ice character, we wanted to add a character that was different to the existing character that could potentially be the reason to the conflict. We kept on adding on new ideas to the existing idea to build a full conflict, and solution. Everyone had different ideas in different aspects of the performance, some people contributed in the lighting aspect, some people contributed in the choreography aspects, and some people contributed in the storyline aspect of this performance. Overall, I think that everyone in this performance fairly contributed to ideas, and critiques that helped us build a better performance.
  2. I believe that I helped contributing mostly in the aspect of the storyline. Since, I did not have much experience in lighting or choreography I knew it was difficult for me to add new ideas from the lack of knowledge. Instead, I attempted to add new ideas and suggested new ideas to the whole group, and wrote everyone’s ideas down on a piece of paper to make sure everyone’s ideas were included and they felt included in the group. After everyone shared their ideas, we used what was written on the paper to combine what everyone agreed to do ad what everyone that was creative. I think I contributed to the storyline of this performance.
  3.  This performance was about how there was a selfish ice god, that overpowered life, and it only cared about itself and no other. However, one day the fire god appears, and they can’t stand the ice god and their irrational behaviors, so fire god decides to rebel against the ice god.  After the extensively long fight, the two gods both die.  A while after, Earth god births from the ashes of the fire god and the ice god, and it creates humans, plants, etc.  I think the main message is that being evil and cruel doesn’t last till the end.
  4. Overall, I think I put in my best effort to create the performance but there are also some parts I would like to improve. One of the parts I liked was the difference in tension between the beginning and the fight seen, I could see that my posture and body tensed and I looked like I was in character. Some things I thought could be worked on was the interaction between the ice god and the fire god, because some parts the timing was off and it did not look as realistic. But altogether, I think I sent out the message of how cruel and evil the ice god is which was one of my ultimate goals in this project.

First Mask Experience

Today was the first time I tried wearing a full face mask, it was a new and different experience but I enjoyed the unfamiliarity of using masks.  When I put the mask on my face, I felt like a different character and not myself, I also couldn’t talk so I only had my body to express my thoughts and feelings, after taking the masks off I felt like I was in a different world, it was really weird and interesting at the same time.

Chair Duet Reflection 1

  • Some stories that naturally emerged are friendship, family, and occasionally enemies. Because some movements seemed more aggressive and unfriendly than others.
  • To be honest, it was awkward at first because I’m usually never comfortable with physical touching, so it was unusual for me. However, when we were working through the routine it didn’t feel as awkward as when we were walking through the moves step by step. It also kind of made me laugh because the routine was unusual to me.
  • Some challenges I faced were coming up with new ideas and making the routine flow altogether. Since we had to work with three different people we had to come up with new ideas, or else it would be repetitive and boring, and at the same time, we had to think about how we were going to connect each move to the next and make it seem natural and smoothly done.

Physical Theatre Reflection#1

Something I understand now about physical theatre is that you need to build trust between you and your peers, and there are several different skills within physical theatre such as tempo, and levels.

Mood Boards: Translating the Mood Board into SPACE Rough Design

This is a rough sketch of a noisy and chaotic society. There are four different parts to this sketch. One part is the large fire that is in the left bottom corner, the fire has drawn in fire trucks and ambulances causing a disturbance. Then there is construction going on next to the fire, and the sound of utensils causes annoyance. On the other side of the road, there’s a whole different city crowded with traffic, buildings, and people. Above in the sky, there is an airplane and also fireworks creating enormous noises. There are so many different noises that resemble my phobia of acousticophobia.

With the circumstance of being online, I made a big proportion of my final design 2D meaning that I will draw it. The only 3D elements are the construction area and the fire.

Mood Boards: Exploring Themes for Scenic Design

Creating a mood board is a step in creating a scenic design. A mood board helps you gather ideas you might include in your scenic design.

Analysis:

Color: the color is not limited, it has a wide range of colors from brighter and vibrant colors to muted and calm colors

Symbol: Behind the images selected there is the symbolism of annoyance and disturbance. For example, when the alarm goes off it wakes you up from your sleep, and you must go to work, school, etc.  In general, going to school in the morning feels like a chore, and people hate when alarms go off. Another example is a fire, when the fire is created fire trucks and ambulances are sent to take out the fire making immense noises, which leaves citizens in anxiety and disturbs their day.

Object: there are so many different types of objects and living things that can produce noises. It is almost as if anything can create noise or disturbance.

Emotion/ Feelings: the emotions and feelings expressed in the images are annoyance and anxiety. Most of the objects and subjects in the images are disturbing and make someone annoyed by the unpleasant sound. Some of the objects in the images can give anxiety to people such as sirens and dog barking, because it can overwhelm someone.

Scenic Design Practice: Sketching Space

These are two different perspectives of my bedroom. The two different perspectives are group plans and elevations. The group plan is when the audience is looking from directly above, while elevations is where the audience is looking at it from the front. When creating Scenic designs the designer must know the different views of the scene they want to create, for it to become presentable from different perspectives.

A Scenic Design Vocab

  • Scenic Design– The aspect of a production that gives a sense of ‘space’ or location. Can be realistic or symbolic. Aids in creating ‘atmosphere’.
  • Mood Board– A poster that contains imagery that will help focus the design or conceptual weight of a piece of theater.
  • Thumbnail Sketch– A quick sketch or drawing that becomes the starting point for a design.
  • Stage Configuration– The layout of the stage in the theater you are producing the play
  • Ground Plan/ “Birds Eyes View”-The top-down look of the design. Gives you an idea of WHERE things are on stage.
  • Elevation– The FRONT look of the design. Gives you an idea of what you will see when you are looking at the stage.
  • Flat– A scenic piece that is used to build doorways or walls. Light, flexible, and can be built to order.
  • Sight Lines– the view of an audience onto the stage. Sightlines are taken from many different seats to see what they are.
  • Masking/ Masking Flats– flats of curtains designed to ‘hide’ the elements of the stage we don’t want the audience to see.

Abstract Es Devlin Questions

Inquiry

At the start of the episode, Es commented that her practice over the years has been to follow the path of inquiry and then find collaborators who are willing to share their paths with her. What does this mean to you?

To me, it means that people with the same interests come together to create more remarkable and more astonishing projects. During the creation process, the people who collaborate share unique ideas of their own and think of a more incredible picture with the impressive views of all the people collaborating on this project.

Ingredients

During the episode, Es stated 5 ingredients of stage design.. (and perhaps photography). What are the ingredients?

Ingredient 1: ____space__________

Ingredient 2: _____light_________

Ingredient 3: _____darkness_________

Ingredient 4: _____scale_________

Ingredient 5: _____time_________

Pick ONE ingredient and describe or explain what it means according to Es.

The fourth ingredient scale means people of different heights and sizes in relation to the scenic design to Es.

Communicating

For “Watch The Throne” tour featuring Kanye West and Jay-Z, Es questioned what the word Throne meant to the artists. For them, Throne was being on top and then having to fight to stay on top — in other words, the Throne meant the tension between power and vulnerability. Can you describe how she created a design that communicated the ‘tension between power and vulnerability”?

Kanye West and Jay-Z were standing on boxes that were above the audience. This shows power because they are above everyone else, and they have dominion over the audience. Still, it also indicates vulnerability because Kanye West and Jay-Z are both on boxes that don’t have safety barriers. With a small trip, there is a possibility of falling off the boxes, and while on top of the box they are exposed to the crowd, everything they do will be shown. That is how Ez created a design to communicate the “tension between power and vulnerability.”

The Spanish Love Deception

The Spanish Love Deception is a romance novel by Elena Armas. This book follows the perspective of the protagonist  Lina, short for Catalina. Catalina has a dark history with her ex Nate who she will have to encounter at her sister’s wedding. She wants to prove to others that she is happy and has forgotten everything in the past. She needed a date to make it seem happy, so she took her only option, Aaron Blackford, a co-worker she hated. During the Spanish trip, Lina realizes she feels something towards Aaron, and so does Aaron. Then the story escalates, and everything changes for them.
