Mood Boards: Translating the Mood Board into SPACE Rough Design

This is a rough sketch of a noisy and chaotic society. There are four different parts to this sketch. One part is the large fire that is in the left bottom corner, the fire has drawn in fire trucks and ambulances causing a disturbance. Then there is construction going on next to the fire, and the sound of utensils causes annoyance. On the other side of the road, there’s a whole different city crowded with traffic, buildings, and people. Above in the sky, there is an airplane and also fireworks creating enormous noises. There are so many different noises that resemble my phobia of acousticophobia.

With the circumstance of being online, I made a big proportion of my final design 2D meaning that I will draw it. The only 3D elements are the construction area and the fire.

Mood Boards: Exploring Themes for Scenic Design

Creating a mood board is a step in creating a scenic design. A mood board helps you gather ideas you might include in your scenic design.

Analysis:

Color: the color is not limited, it has a wide range of colors from brighter and vibrant colors to muted and calm colors

Symbol: Behind the images selected there is the symbolism of annoyance and disturbance. For example, when the alarm goes off it wakes you up from your sleep, and you must go to work, school, etc.  In general, going to school in the morning feels like a chore, and people hate when alarms go off. Another example is a fire, when the fire is created fire trucks and ambulances are sent to take out the fire making immense noises, which leaves citizens in anxiety and disturbs their day.

Object: there are so many different types of objects and living things that can produce noises. It is almost as if anything can create noise or disturbance.

Emotion/ Feelings: the emotions and feelings expressed in the images are annoyance and anxiety. Most of the objects and subjects in the images are disturbing and make someone annoyed by the unpleasant sound. Some of the objects in the images can give anxiety to people such as sirens and dog barking, because it can overwhelm someone.

Scenic Design Practice: Sketching Space

These are two different perspectives of my bedroom. The two different perspectives are group plans and elevations. The group plan is when the audience is looking from directly above, while elevations is where the audience is looking at it from the front. When creating Scenic designs the designer must know the different views of the scene they want to create, for it to become presentable from different perspectives.

A Scenic Design Vocab

  • Scenic Design– The aspect of a production that gives a sense of ‘space’ or location. Can be realistic or symbolic. Aids in creating ‘atmosphere’.
  • Mood Board– A poster that contains imagery that will help focus the design or conceptual weight of a piece of theater.
  • Thumbnail Sketch– A quick sketch or drawing that becomes the starting point for a design.
  • Stage Configuration– The layout of the stage in the theater you are producing the play
  • Ground Plan/ “Birds Eyes View”-The top-down look of the design. Gives you an idea of WHERE things are on stage.
  • Elevation– The FRONT look of the design. Gives you an idea of what you will see when you are looking at the stage.
  • Flat– A scenic piece that is used to build doorways or walls. Light, flexible, and can be built to order.
  • Sight Lines– the view of an audience onto the stage. Sightlines are taken from many different seats to see what they are.
  • Masking/ Masking Flats– flats of curtains designed to ‘hide’ the elements of the stage we don’t want the audience to see.

Abstract Es Devlin Questions

Inquiry

At the start of the episode, Es commented that her practice over the years has been to follow the path of inquiry and then find collaborators who are willing to share their paths with her. What does this mean to you?

To me, it means that people with the same interests come together to create more remarkable and more astonishing projects. During the creation process, the people who collaborate share unique ideas of their own and think of a more incredible picture with the impressive views of all the people collaborating on this project.

Ingredients

During the episode, Es stated 5 ingredients of stage design.. (and perhaps photography). What are the ingredients?

Ingredient 1: ____space__________

Ingredient 2: _____light_________

Ingredient 3: _____darkness_________

Ingredient 4: _____scale_________

Ingredient 5: _____time_________

Pick ONE ingredient and describe or explain what it means according to Es.

The fourth ingredient scale means people of different heights and sizes in relation to the scenic design to Es.

Communicating

For “Watch The Throne” tour featuring Kanye West and Jay-Z, Es questioned what the word Throne meant to the artists. For them, Throne was being on top and then having to fight to stay on top — in other words, the Throne meant the tension between power and vulnerability. Can you describe how she created a design that communicated the ‘tension between power and vulnerability”?

Kanye West and Jay-Z were standing on boxes that were above the audience. This shows power because they are above everyone else, and they have dominion over the audience. Still, it also indicates vulnerability because Kanye West and Jay-Z are both on boxes that don’t have safety barriers. With a small trip, there is a possibility of falling off the boxes, and while on top of the box they are exposed to the crowd, everything they do will be shown. That is how Ez created a design to communicate the “tension between power and vulnerability.”

Finish Scenic Painting

Process:

The first step of painting this scenic painting was scumbling,  my group blended yellow, red, and brown paint to create a brick-like color as a background. The second step was lining, my group used gray-colored paint to line the shapes of bricks, it gave a general idea of the placings of the bricks. The following step was highlights and shadows, it’s the white and black lines on either side of the gray lining, the purpose is to give the dimensions of the bricks and make it look realistic. The next step was texturing, it’s the dark shades spreading from one side of the brick, the purpose of this skill is to give the feelings of a real brick wall. Last but not least, splattering, our group used purple, green, and blue watery paint and splattered it evenly across the scenic painting. That is how the scenic painting was created!

Reflect:

Overall, I thought me and my group did an excellent job in displaying the scenic painting skills such as scumbling, lining, etc. If we did it again maybe we could make the lining thicker so that you can see the distinction of bricks better from afar. What I realized while creating this scenic painting is that it does not have to look perfect from up close, because this is only going to be seen from a distance by the audience.

Parts of a Hollywood Stage Flat

This is the Hollywood stage flat me and my group have been creating over the past 2 to 3 classes. During the process, I have learnt how to use different design tools I never used before. It was overall a great new experience!

Theatre Tour Experience

Panel controlling the curtains

I chose this picture because I thought that his panel is an essential part of the functioning of the theatre because it controls the curtains, it moves the curtains up and down, from left to right, if the panel wasn’t there the curtains would have to be moved by humans tugging on ropes.

Dimmer

I chose this picture because I found it interesting that this machine can dim all the lights in the theatre which I find very cool. This machine can control the brightness and dimness in the theatre.

Fly System

This space is the highest place in the theatre and the ISB building and that is why I found it interesting. This is the root of the theatre as everything is attached to this area of the theatre.

Fly Space

This is where the curtains are attached and are moved side to side. This part of the theatre is really important because it is a part of the curtain machinery and without it, the curtains won’t be attached.

Catwalk

This narrow pathway is above the audience. I never noticed the catwalk until we went up there which I thought was unbelievable. It is utilized for workers to walk on without the audience noticing. It can be super beneficial during acts because the audience cannot see the catwalk from their perspective.

The Booth

I think the booth is interesting because it controls all the lights displayed on stage, the colors, which side the light is shined, and the cyclorama. The light can create a sense of the mood on stage so I think it is significantly important.

Constume Design

Costume design is a work of art. Because the process of creating costumes for a show, musical, theatre act, takes a lot of thoughtful thinking since the costume can make it or break it. The role of the costume is severely important to emphasize the theme and characteristics.

10 Costume Design Factors

  2. Gender

  4. Occupation
  5. Geographic Location
  6. Occasion or Activity
  7. Time of Day
  8. Season-weather
  9. Historical period
