independent project——stickers

  • Project: Stop Cyberbullying
    • With a set of stickers (5), I want to deliver the idea that cyberbullying is dangerous and should be stopped.
    • The target audience, the teenagers, is a large group of victims of cyberbullying, so it’s necessary to bring up their attention to protecting themselves and also minding their own behaviors.
    • Therefore, creating stickers for laptops, it’s a nice way to spread and deliver my message.
  • Brainstorm
  • Made with Padlet
  • Design Brief
  • Design problem: As people are using the internet more and more nowadays, the rate of cyberbullying is increasing severely. It is also a harsh problem among teenagers. For this project, I would like to design some stickers that warn of how harmful cyberbullying is, thus stopping it.
User/audience My main audience will be teenagers, and most of them love having stickers on their laptops, so it’s a way to spread my belief and also entertain them.
Purpose My main focus is to use the media of stickers to stop cyberbullying. Since it is sticking to laptops, it also keeps reminding people that they should not bully others online.
Constraints I might not be able to print them out, and I don’t have vpn during having online classes, which constrains my inspiration.
Goals I’m hoping to make at least 4 stickers into a set of stickers. Each should have a clear delivery of objects and words.
Materials/resources Laptop (Affinity Designer), paper, iPad.

  • Audience Profile
    • In 2019, Cyberbullying Research Center reported that 36.5% of U.S. teenagers had been cyberbullied in their lifetime.
    • In 2021, China Youth and Children Research Center recorded that around 17.4% of Chinese teenagers had been cyberbullied.
    • Ten years ago, a 16-year-old teenage girl hang herself at home due to cyberbullying. Before she committed suicide, she posted a youtube video: My Story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, and self-harm about the harsh experience she suffered which then went viral on the internet. She showed how she was being threatened online, and how her classmates were physically bullying her along with cyberbullying after school. She transferred and escaped many times, but nothing helps.
  • Starting Process
    • brainstorming what I can do
    • I chose to dive deeper into the cyberbullying topic since I’m really interested in this topic and really want to raise people’s awareness on it
  • Sketches
    • I did a brainstorming and easy sketches about what symbols I can use to represent the situation of cyberbullying
    • I didn’t create all of them into stickers but I hope to if there’s more time
    • I found some references for the mouth and the brain
  • Feedback:
    • my initial sketch looks like this
    • My friend’s feedback was that she was not sure if this is a sticker because it’s just like some elements. Also, by just sketching all negative views, it may seem like I’m supporting cyberbullying.
    • I added signs in my refinements to make sure it’s clear that I’m criticizing these actions and that also made it looks more like a sticker. Here’s the detailed sketch for each sticker below:
  • Detail
  • color scheme
    • I decided to use white, black, and grey because I want to keep it simple and not bother the icon itself. At the same time, I chose red since I believe red stand for aggressive and violent which is perfectly representing the perpetrators.
  • phone
    • I used a handcuff that handcuffed the phone and hand together. This is how we are now, that we cannot leave the phone for even a second, it is as if handcuffed in our hand.
    • Also, I used ambiguity to play a wordplay in the text. It is a cell phone, but “cell” also has the meaning of prison, which represents how phones are prisoning us.
  • mouse
    • By adding teeth to the mouse with blood on it, I tried to create the image that the action of clicking a mouse for spreading unhealthy speeches is harming people online. It seems virtual on the internet but it hurt people physically, like teeth biting.
  • mouth
    • This is an annoying mouth that I simply wanted to show what people’s aggressive words are like online. We should always mind our words before we speak them out loud both in person and online.
  • knife
    • I really like this interesting idea. The elements that made up the screen are actually iPhones (if you zoom in closely), and it’s like the phone screen is showing out the knife. Phones are one of the media that people can cyberbully others on, so I chose to use them as elements, to show that their words are like actual knives.
  • brain
    • With this image, I wanted to sarcasm at people who cyberbullied others. It is a brain which submerged in sewage and was tarnished by it, so their brain isn’t working well. People who chose to cyberbully others have minds that aren’t healthy and they should really think if they are using their brain well.
  • Mockups
  • Presentation
    • In my presentation, I explained the condition, my audience, and my purpose.
    • I present all my stickers with a brief introduction of what I’m trying to communicate
    • I also included mockups that show the real usages.
  • Strengths
    • I believe that I created efficient messages for my goal——stopping cyberbullying, but making all negative actions in cyberbullying and adding warnings/signs that we shouldn’t follow it. Also, I made 5 stickers, which means there’s quite a variety between each one, and made it more diverse.
    • At the same time, my sketches met my expectation, so I consider this as achieving the success criteria.
  • Weaknesses
    • If there’s more time, I believe that I can refine my stickers ad make them more professional. I still have some other ideas that I can sketch, but again, due to the time, I wasn’t able to make them out.
    • Also, my perspective mainly stood on how the perpetrator behaved, so it might look too aggressive with the red color, this may not really attract audiences.
  • What did you enjoy? What do you think you did well? What are you happy with & why?
    • I love drawing in Affinity Designer and I improved my pen tool skill. Also, I think I did well in coming up with this topic, cyberbullying, to investigate. As there’s a huge percentage of people who had suffered cyberbullying, this is a widespread topic so the audience is quite broad.
  • What was difficult? What didn’t go well?
    • The main difficulty would be time. Still, there were quite a lot of technical problems during the process which made me frustrated with wasting time on it. For example, my computer sometimes froze and it’s hard to operate. Also, the mockup templates are having issues downloading or opening and I spent a lot of time searching for other mockups.
  • What would you need to do differently next time? What needs further improvement & why?
    • I will try to explore more ideas and absorb the lessons from this project. In this way, I can be more organized, and easier to separate my work time.
    • I also want to make more stickers and make them into a larger set. And if I have time, I want to make my color scheme more beautiful since now there’s only black, white, grey, and red. With uniformed color and style, it can make the whole set look more comfortable.

Wheel shoe – wearable product

  • Presentation

  • explanation
    • In this presentation, I included a visualized model which shows different materials, along with different view sides. Also, I included the scale of the model in the side view. I also zoomed in the sticks that can change the size of the base.
  • Ideas:
  • Made with Padlet

DP1: Apply design thinking practices to generate divergent ideas:

  • Brainstorming
    • I tried to make a high heel with wheels connected to it. This model is really har to recognize so I created the sketch below:
    • In this way, it is a high heel that can roll with wheels. However, this is a rough idea and hard to create, and quite unsafe.
  • Another Idea
    • Due to the unsafety of the first draft, I then thought about the shoes I saw in my childhood: they have wheels inserted inside the shoe base, So I began to think what if I separate the wheels and the shoe so that it can be an ordinary shoe but also easily connected to wheels as if the wheels are “wearable”
    • the first one is the bottom of a shoe, there can be a connection thing inserted
    • the second is where the shoe can be connected, it has four wheels and is easy to connect
    • the third is a how they were finally presented
  • Decision
    • I chose to develop the second idea instead of the high heel. It is a lot safer to wear, and what’s more important, I can only make out a base with wheels, so it seems like an interesting idea.
  • Feedback
    • Q: To connect the shoe to the wheels, all shoes have to have a special connection, so not all shoes are able to wear it.
      • As a result, I decided to abandon the connection on the bottom. Instead, I think that all shoes can wear is really important. So, I want to make a shoe-like wheelbase that you can wear the shoe, then wear the shoe on the wheel shoe.
    • Q: How do you realize the function of changing the size (after making out the 3d model below)
      • I asked teachers from the design center for help. What I got is that I can have two sticks, one inside the other, and have holes on them. then make another small connection that can plug in the hole
      • this is also showed in the video of model afterwards
  • Model
    • to visualize my idea, I use a 3d modeling app on iPad, here are some of my processes:
    • origin shoe base
    • creat the 3d base and add wheels
    • detailed the functions such as adding a brake, also having front and back blocks
    • as I develop the model, I decided to add a function that makes it unique from other similar products, to be able to adjust the size. with the connection in the middle, it is able to change the length of the shoe by sliding the connections.
    • some detail:
  • 3d printing:
  • technical and design skills:

    • I learned to use a new app that helps my 3d modeling skills. Also, I tried 3d printing and understand how 3d printing works.
  • Reflection
    • This is a quite effective response to my idea – to make walking funner and faster. Although the 3d printed model is not actually wearable due to the weakness of the material, it is a strong model that is useable for really making out a product.
    • I believe I did well in developing the idea into a visual model and was able to include all components that are needed in the shoe
    • I didn’t have time and materials to create the lace for the model because of covid. I can try more materials next time and find more appropriate materials.

pavilion

  • Pavilion
    • A pavilion may be a subsidiary building that is either positioned separately or as an attachment to the main building.
    • It provides a shelter for entertainment, art, or other usages.
    • This project is about making a creative architecture for ISB students that placed in ISB somewhere.
  • Made with Padlet
  • ideas
    • brainstorming
    • everyday objects:
      • I uses a carton package of pens and made a rough model
    • 3d model
      • after coming back to campus, I uses toothpicks and hot glue and made out the following models
      • I wanted to make a huge soccer-like shape, but as I keep developing, I found it difficult to make perfect pentagons and the shape looks empty with nothing inside the huge pentagons.
      • this was an unsuccessful example because it is very hard to hold its shape.
      • therefore, I tried the most stable shape: triangles, and made out another structure
      • I wanted to make a stable structure that could handle some weight on it, and I really like the regular geometric shapes which made it looks professional and precise.
      • then, I tried to use paper to show how this structure may work as a pavilion and came out the final model
    • digital 3d model
      • after making out the actual model, I tried and made a digital one on the computer
  • feedbacks & responses
    • Q: The floor looks hard for students to stay on since it is oblique?
      • I added a flat floor in the digital model for students to work more comfortably on.
    • Q: Why is the ceiling open as it should be quiet?
      • It is hard to make the glasses from the actual model to show the differences with other walls, so I use two different materials in the digital model to show the differences between them.
    • Q: What could the student do inside it?
      • The students could do whatever they want but only if it is quiet and not disturbing others. This is a place for them to relax from the heavy pressures.
  • big decisions:
    • After the failure of the first model, I found it important to make the structure stable and easier to control. So I decided to use the triangular structure and the octahedrons seems easy to make, and I made some out. After that, I realized that it is cool to connect all of them together which formed the big structure with 9 octahedrons.
    • However, at this stage, the structure has nothing to do with a pavilion, so I think of using the advantages of 9 octahedrons and making a path through which people can walk in. I uses paper triangles to cover the space and made it more like a shelter. Then, I realized it seems like a maze shape.
    • Because this pavilion can be a closed space, I came out with the idea of making it into a quiet place for students to relax. As a result, I decided to use sound-absorbing materials to isolate the sound. In these ways, I got my final project of a ‘quiet maze’ that allows students to enjoy themselves.
  • presentation poster
    • I’m able to provide a functional pavilion for ISB students on the campus that succeed in the goal of this project.
    •  My audience may be all ISB students and teachers, and I’m aiming to present the idea of building this pavilion on the campus. As a result, I hope that they would appreciate this idea and consider this plan.
    • During the process, I successfully made out a 3d model of this pavilion which allowed me to screenshot it from different angles and be able to change the perspective easily. This made my progress much smoother than I thought.
    • pavilion presentation_0316
  • improvement
    • If I have more time, I could finalize the model about the details. Also, I could add desks and chairs (maybe sofas since they’re comfortable) for the students in the pavilion, instead of modeling everyone sitting on the ground. I could also add decorations on the walls to make them feel relaxed.

PHASE 1: PLAN

  • What is the purpose of your device/toy, how does it function, and who is your user?
    • I want to convert sound energy to kinetic energy and make a sound-controlled toy car. Children can play with just making noises to keep the car driving. Also, I want to develop technology that allows the speed of the car to change as the volume change.
  • What is the environmental impact of your product and is it durable and safe?
    • The environmental impact would be relatively small because it won’t produce waste as the sound energy is converting to kinetic energy. However, the machine parts may influence the environment and can’t be really durable due to the technology.
  • What precedents inspired you? What did you take away from them & how did it inform your choices?
    • A traditional toy car usually converts solar energy to kinetic energy, and as I researched for other products, I found that sound energy is also convertible. As a result, I want to combine this idea with the original way of creating a car together.
  • How are you making your product original and/or using creativity?
    • I want to keep researching if there are ways to make the car change directions based on different sounds. This technology may be really original and new for our stage, thus, this idea is creative for our product.

PHASE 2: DEVELOP & PLAN

  • Explain how you used design thinking practices to arrive at this iteration of your toy/device.
    • We brainstormed different ways to realize our goal of converting sound energy to kinetic energy and decided to use a sound sensor to detect the voices and connect them with the wheels.
  • Develop a detailed plan for creating the preferred design, including success criteria.
    • Our goal is to make out a toy car that could move as it has sound energy. However, since the sound sensor and detector require a lot of prior knowledge, we didn’t expect them to be able to change the speed due to the volume. As a result, the success criteria may be at least make up a motion toy car.
  • Share your design concept.***Show photos, measurements, materials, & techniques needed for construction.

PHASE 3: CREATE & IMPROVE

  • Through research about Arduino coding systems, we were able to create a sound detector and connect it with the engine successfully. Also, we made a rough prototype of the car with Legos. However, we encounter the following problems:
    • the engine was not strong enough for the car to move forward
    • the delaying system seems unpredictable
    • the whole car with all components on it would be way heavier than we expect
    • some codes look confused
  • to solve these problems, we planned for:
    • ask for more advice from the teachers about Arduino coding
    • try and remake a car with lighter weight
    • probably add another engine in order to add strength
    • use a smaller prototype for examples of kids’ product that shows the same authority as the bigger one (if we cannot fix the problems at last)
  • feedback:
    • How can you connect the motor to the car?
    • Is there any way to make the car lighter?

PHASE 4: REFLECT & SHARE

  • Give an overview of your design process, sharing the product & your learning
  1. research
    1. Before the investing, we researched how to use sound sensors and found the following websites introducing similar functions that we needed:
      1. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=setjiVH0_IY
      2. https://randomnerdtutorials.com/guide-for-microphone-sound-sensor-with-arduino/
      3. https://www.instructables.com/Arduino-Sound-Sensor-with-LED/
  2. coding
    1. We understood and imitated the use of sound sensors and connected our own to the Arduino board. Then, by asking the teachers and learning from videos, we wrote the code that allows built-in LED light to turn on whenever the sound sensor detects voices.
  3. motor
    1. With prior knowledge, it is easier to connect the motor and battery to the Arduino board and realize the function of spinning the wheels when it detects sound. However, we still failed a few times while connecting the wires.
  4. time delay (Nan) & car building (me) [work splitting] & problems
    1. Nan worked on coding the delaying function which allows the car to move when it detects sound and stops when there are no voices. In this way, we can show our advantages in sound-controlling better. However, we met some problems: the motor didn’t stop when the voice stop and it is hard to figure out the usages of different codes. As a result, we went to find Mr. Beatty about the coding problems. We found out that the noises from the motor spinning were too loud and made the sound sensor keep detecting voices, so we fixed it by changing the sensitivity of the sensor at last.
    2. At the same time, I collected different materials for making the car and decided to use Lego because it is convenient and easier to connect well. After I made a rough prototype of the car, I realized that it is hard to attach the motor with the gearwheel perfectly to allow the car wheels to move. The energy to the motor was not enough to keep the wheels moving on the ground even if I tried to make the car as light as I could. Therefore, we decided to add another motor, but the result didn’t turn out to be what we expected.
  5. Finalizing & Reflection
    1. our final prototype
    2. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make our car move before the deadline and the wires fell off just before exhibiting. But still, as I saw many classmates gathering around our prototype and speaking into the microphone to make the motor move, I was really happy that this unfinished product still brought some entertainment to my friends.
    3. We were unable to aim our goal of the sound-powered car but making the sound-controlled one still satisfied me. We converted electric energy from the laptop into kinetic energy of the wheel’s movement. Even though we didn’t finalize our product in these 5 lessons, triggering the motor by the sounds already met my success criteria, and this new technology that I learned made me very proud.
    4. If we have more time, we can use this technology to make a voice-controlled fan or windmill. This will be a perfect toy for children below 12 and a useful tool for us as high schoolers in summer.
    5. The most challenging thing during the period was that we need to study the technology that we didn’t really know before and we need to code our own functions.

    • Even though the delivery system in China now is already well-developed, it is still really hard for people to get fresh daily food delivered because it takes time during the process, so these products are hard to keep fresh. Especially during the time of COVID-19, people are less likely to go outside and they tend to order processed food from Taobao or Jingdong.
    • This delivery system will also provide a chance for the local supermarkets to keep running since fewer people are coming.

Tea House

  • I made a logo for a made-up company “Tea House” to engage the audience with this simple image to show the leisure and relaxing environment of the tea house.
  • Background information:
    • Tea is an aromatic beverage prepared by pouring hot or boiling water over cured or fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, an evergreen shrub native to China and other East Asian countries. After water, it is the most widely consumed drink in the world.
    • The tea plant originated in the region encompassing today’s Southwest China, Tibet, north Myanmar, and Northeast India, where it was used as a medicinal drink by various ethnic groups.
    • teahouse (mainly Asia) or tearoom (also tea room) is an establishment that primarily serves tea and other light refreshments. A tea room may be a room set aside in a hotel especially for serving afternoon tea, or maybe an establishment that only serves cream teas. Although the function of a tearoom may vary according to the circumstance or country, teahouses often serve as centers of social interaction, like coffeehouses.
  • Tea House:
    • tea house in the past: mainly old people
    • modern tea house: more and more young people relax here
  • Audience
    • Who is the target audience of the product or service (age, genders, income, interests, etc etc)?
      • Mainly elderlies in Chinese with high income have the pleasure to enjoy tea.
      • Also, some young people in Asia are starting to get interested in tea now.
    • What 3 keywords would the client use to describe their product/service?
      • relaxing, welcoming, simple
  • Logo Concept:
    • to create a simple logo with a combination of tea and house that people can feel the relaxing and leisure of a tea house and be willing to go in.
  • Padlet and ideas:
  • Made with Padlet
  • brainstorm practices:
  • Detailed development drawings (paper, iPad):
    • After a few tries of the tea logo, I decided it’s easier to make a tea house logo because I can combine different elements. So I chose the last one to develop. It is a combination of a teabag and a house inside it. The string on the house is the string on the teabag and I wanted to show the imagery of hanging house as a teabag.
  • Process & Feedbacks
  1. Mr. Griffin advised me to keep the logo black and white first and try different versions with the shadows. Also, I should look for more typography to see which one best fits.
    • I tried several different fonts like listing them together. And I also tried the different combinations with the black and white lines. For example, the black tea bag and the white house or the converse.
  2. Then, I revised the lines on myself to make it more simple and beautiful
  3. I asked Nan if there’s any place to improve and she advised me to make the shape rounder without the sharp edge on the top.
  4. I put the pogo on the mockup bag, but it turned out weird because I used the white color on top of the black so it is not transparent.
    • there left an ugly white shape
    • I tried myself and asked Mr. Griffin for help and finally it with expanding the strokes.
    • the transparent shape looks much better
  5. I was inspired by the logo Mr. Griffin showed so I made another version of it:
  • draft:
  • final logo:
    1. teahouse_1
    2. teahouse_2
  •  mockups:
  • poster
  • reflection:
    • What creative decisions did you take and why?
      • As I went through the information on tea, I realized that teabag is an essential symbol of tea. So I began to try representing tea using a teabag.
    • Which design elements and principles have you emphasized and how does this make your logo effective?
      • I emphasized negative space by shaping out a house inside a teabag. This made my logo more interesting as it communicated with two important elements of the tea house.
    • What did you do well in this project?
      • I really like how I used a string to hang the house just like hanging a teabag in the cup for a cup of tea. In this way, I combined the feature of a teabag with the house.
    • What would you improve/do differently next time and why?
      • Maybe I can come up with more versions of the logo?

  • Title: Bear Town
  • Author: Fredrik Backman
  • Page # 36
  • Reflection
    • The beginning of the story was establishing an ice hockey town, Beartown, where ice hockey was everything for the town. I love the setting of the town and how the author described it in a peaceful tone, reading for the huge conflict later on. Everything was quiet and went the way it should have worked, but everything was being poised for the point to explode together.
    • I love the sentence “people are standing in silent lines with their eyes half-open and their minds half-closed” in p2. Instead of saying people’s mind eyes and minds are half-open (or half-closed), using different ways of expressing the “half” made readers have the intention of their eyes being more open and their minds being more closed. This is where I think the author chose the word cleverly and suddenly made the imagery vivid.

  • Author: Sherman Alexie
  • Page # 230 (finished)
  • Reflection:
    • When I first began to read the book, I found it similar to Diary of a Wimpy Kid with the humorous tone and optimistic viewpoint of the protagonist’s unfortunate life. However, I didn’t really enjoy reading it and treated it like homework for English class that I must finish. My reading speed is also really slow.
    • Until last week, I found I had only about five days to read and 200 pages left, I finally began reading it fast. Surprisingly, I fell in love with the exciting plot and was eager to keep reading. I was always worrying if the whites are going to be mean to Junior again, but they turned out to be pretty nice and encouraged him to keep trying.
    • For example, when he wrote about how poor he was and he had to ask Roger for help to pay his money. I imagined that his girlfriend would break up with him after she found the truth. However, she and Roger helped him out with this poor situation. The contrast of their attitude before and after moved me. Even though they had a bias in Indians, after they find out his unique personality, they began to like him. This is also how I liked, the way Junior survived in the whites.

  • reflection:
    • The story is still building up the town with descriptions and information about the images of a group of characters. Although the exposition is quite long and maybe unnecessary, I really like the style of it like how the author developed vivid personalities for all characters. He is creating a small world among and this is what I seek to read. The story goes as if life is normal and calm as usual in a town.

  • reflection:
    • It is a bit confusing in the beginning and I’m quite struggling with all the characters appearing since they seem random and hard to remember. I guess if they will all involve in the murder afterward.

    • I just got to the part where Mr. Rachett died. This is so weird that he hided his real name and real identity and that he mentioned he’s being threatened. Also, the depressing night with all other noise sounds mysterious and it must be when the murderer murdered him. I guess the murderer hided in the old lady’s room since she was claiming someone being in her room. It seems quite easy to handle since no one can get on or get off the train, so all suspects are on the train.

Everyone seems unrelated to the case now, I wonder if Agathe will hide the murderer at the end, but that is quite boring if she did. Or it’s the least possible person? I hope the truth won’t be coming out into some random rigid routine.

    • The truth is actually really really surprised that all 12 passengers were involved in this well-organized plan. However, I didn’t feel like they are bad or something to kill Mr. Rachett because he’s obviously unlikeable and he did so many bad things. These people who killed him were actually doing a good thing. Overall, the mystery is catching my eye since this locked-room mystery helped it focus on all suspects instead of they still need to find the suspects. And I’m attracted by how this murder was operated and it’s really deliberate. It gives me a fun read.
