independent project——stickers

  • Project: Stop Cyberbullying
    • With a set of stickers (5), I want to deliver the idea that cyberbullying is dangerous and should be stopped.
    • The target audience, the teenagers, is a large group of victims of cyberbullying, so it’s necessary to bring up their attention to protecting themselves and also minding their own behaviors.
    • Therefore, creating stickers for laptops, it’s a nice way to spread and deliver my message.
  • Brainstorm
  • Made with Padlet
  • Design Brief
  • Design problem: As people are using the internet more and more nowadays, the rate of cyberbullying is increasing severely. It is also a harsh problem among teenagers. For this project, I would like to design some stickers that warn of how harmful cyberbullying is, thus stopping it.
User/audience My main audience will be teenagers, and most of them love having stickers on their laptops, so it’s a way to spread my belief and also entertain them.
Purpose My main focus is to use the media of stickers to stop cyberbullying. Since it is sticking to laptops, it also keeps reminding people that they should not bully others online.
Constraints I might not be able to print them out, and I don’t have vpn during having online classes, which constrains my inspiration.
Goals I’m hoping to make at least 4 stickers into a set of stickers. Each should have a clear delivery of objects and words.
Materials/resources Laptop (Affinity Designer), paper, iPad.

  • Audience Profile
    • In 2019, Cyberbullying Research Center reported that 36.5% of U.S. teenagers had been cyberbullied in their lifetime.
    • In 2021, China Youth and Children Research Center recorded that around 17.4% of Chinese teenagers had been cyberbullied.
    • Ten years ago, a 16-year-old teenage girl hang herself at home due to cyberbullying. Before she committed suicide, she posted a youtube video: My Story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, and self-harm about the harsh experience she suffered which then went viral on the internet. She showed how she was being threatened online, and how her classmates were physically bullying her along with cyberbullying after school. She transferred and escaped many times, but nothing helps.
  • Starting Process
    • brainstorming what I can do
    • I chose to dive deeper into the cyberbullying topic since I’m really interested in this topic and really want to raise people’s awareness on it
  • Sketches
    • I did a brainstorming and easy sketches about what symbols I can use to represent the situation of cyberbullying
    • I didn’t create all of them into stickers but I hope to if there’s more time
    • I found some references for the mouth and the brain
  • Feedback:
    • my initial sketch looks like this
    • My friend’s feedback was that she was not sure if this is a sticker because it’s just like some elements. Also, by just sketching all negative views, it may seem like I’m supporting cyberbullying.
    • I added signs in my refinements to make sure it’s clear that I’m criticizing these actions and that also made it looks more like a sticker. Here’s the detailed sketch for each sticker below:
  • Detail
  • color scheme
    • I decided to use white, black, and grey because I want to keep it simple and not bother the icon itself. At the same time, I chose red since I believe red stand for aggressive and violent which is perfectly representing the perpetrators.
  • phone
    • I used a handcuff that handcuffed the phone and hand together. This is how we are now, that we cannot leave the phone for even a second, it is as if handcuffed in our hand.
    • Also, I used ambiguity to play a wordplay in the text. It is a cell phone, but “cell” also has the meaning of prison, which represents how phones are prisoning us.
  • mouse
    • By adding teeth to the mouse with blood on it, I tried to create the image that the action of clicking a mouse for spreading unhealthy speeches is harming people online. It seems virtual on the internet but it hurt people physically, like teeth biting.
  • mouth
    • This is an annoying mouth that I simply wanted to show what people’s aggressive words are like online. We should always mind our words before we speak them out loud both in person and online.
  • knife
    • I really like this interesting idea. The elements that made up the screen are actually iPhones (if you zoom in closely), and it’s like the phone screen is showing out the knife. Phones are one of the media that people can cyberbully others on, so I chose to use them as elements, to show that their words are like actual knives.
  • brain
    • With this image, I wanted to sarcasm at people who cyberbullied others. It is a brain which submerged in sewage and was tarnished by it, so their brain isn’t working well. People who chose to cyberbully others have minds that aren’t healthy and they should really think if they are using their brain well.
  • Mockups
  • Presentation
    • In my presentation, I explained the condition, my audience, and my purpose.
    • I present all my stickers with a brief introduction of what I’m trying to communicate
    • I also included mockups that show the real usages.
  • Strengths
    • I believe that I created efficient messages for my goal——stopping cyberbullying, but making all negative actions in cyberbullying and adding warnings/signs that we shouldn’t follow it. Also, I made 5 stickers, which means there’s quite a variety between each one, and made it more diverse.
    • At the same time, my sketches met my expectation, so I consider this as achieving the success criteria.
  • Weaknesses
    • If there’s more time, I believe that I can refine my stickers ad make them more professional. I still have some other ideas that I can sketch, but again, due to the time, I wasn’t able to make them out.
    • Also, my perspective mainly stood on how the perpetrator behaved, so it might look too aggressive with the red color, this may not really attract audiences.
  • What did you enjoy? What do you think you did well? What are you happy with & why?
    • I love drawing in Affinity Designer and I improved my pen tool skill. Also, I think I did well in coming up with this topic, cyberbullying, to investigate. As there’s a huge percentage of people who had suffered cyberbullying, this is a widespread topic so the audience is quite broad.
  • What was difficult? What didn’t go well?
    • The main difficulty would be time. Still, there were quite a lot of technical problems during the process which made me frustrated with wasting time on it. For example, my computer sometimes froze and it’s hard to operate. Also, the mockup templates are having issues downloading or opening and I spent a lot of time searching for other mockups.
  • What would you need to do differently next time? What needs further improvement & why?
    • I will try to explore more ideas and absorb the lessons from this project. In this way, I can be more organized, and easier to separate my work time.
    • I also want to make more stickers and make them into a larger set. And if I have time, I want to make my color scheme more beautiful since now there’s only black, white, grey, and red. With uniformed color and style, it can make the whole set look more comfortable.

Wheel shoe – wearable product

  • Presentation

  • explanation
    • In this presentation, I included a visualized model which shows different materials, along with different view sides. Also, I included the scale of the model in the side view. I also zoomed in the sticks that can change the size of the base.
  • Ideas:
  • Made with Padlet

DP1: Apply design thinking practices to generate divergent ideas:

  • Brainstorming
    • I tried to make a high heel with wheels connected to it. This model is really har to recognize so I created the sketch below:
    • In this way, it is a high heel that can roll with wheels. However, this is a rough idea and hard to create, and quite unsafe.
  • Another Idea
    • Due to the unsafety of the first draft, I then thought about the shoes I saw in my childhood: they have wheels inserted inside the shoe base, So I began to think what if I separate the wheels and the shoe so that it can be an ordinary shoe but also easily connected to wheels as if the wheels are “wearable”
    • the first one is the bottom of a shoe, there can be a connection thing inserted
    • the second is where the shoe can be connected, it has four wheels and is easy to connect
    • the third is a how they were finally presented
  • Decision
    • I chose to develop the second idea instead of the high heel. It is a lot safer to wear, and what’s more important, I can only make out a base with wheels, so it seems like an interesting idea.
  • Feedback
    • Q: To connect the shoe to the wheels, all shoes have to have a special connection, so not all shoes are able to wear it.
      • As a result, I decided to abandon the connection on the bottom. Instead, I think that all shoes can wear is really important. So, I want to make a shoe-like wheelbase that you can wear the shoe, then wear the shoe on the wheel shoe.
    • Q: How do you realize the function of changing the size (after making out the 3d model below)
      • I asked teachers from the design center for help. What I got is that I can have two sticks, one inside the other, and have holes on them. then make another small connection that can plug in the hole
      • this is also showed in the video of model afterwards
  • Model
    • to visualize my idea, I use a 3d modeling app on iPad, here are some of my processes:
    • origin shoe base
    • creat the 3d base and add wheels
    • detailed the functions such as adding a brake, also having front and back blocks
    • as I develop the model, I decided to add a function that makes it unique from other similar products, to be able to adjust the size. with the connection in the middle, it is able to change the length of the shoe by sliding the connections.
    • some detail:
  • 3d printing:
  • technical and design skills:

    • I learned to use a new app that helps my 3d modeling skills. Also, I tried 3d printing and understand how 3d printing works.
  • Reflection
    • This is a quite effective response to my idea – to make walking funner and faster. Although the 3d printed model is not actually wearable due to the weakness of the material, it is a strong model that is useable for really making out a product.
    • I believe I did well in developing the idea into a visual model and was able to include all components that are needed in the shoe
    • I didn’t have time and materials to create the lace for the model because of covid. I can try more materials next time and find more appropriate materials.

pavilion

  • Pavilion
    • A pavilion may be a subsidiary building that is either positioned separately or as an attachment to the main building.
    • It provides a shelter for entertainment, art, or other usages.
    • This project is about making a creative architecture for ISB students that placed in ISB somewhere.
  • Made with Padlet
  • ideas
    • brainstorming
    • everyday objects:
      • I uses a carton package of pens and made a rough model
    • 3d model
      • after coming back to campus, I uses toothpicks and hot glue and made out the following models
      • I wanted to make a huge soccer-like shape, but as I keep developing, I found it difficult to make perfect pentagons and the shape looks empty with nothing inside the huge pentagons.
      • this was an unsuccessful example because it is very hard to hold its shape.
      • therefore, I tried the most stable shape: triangles, and made out another structure
      • I wanted to make a stable structure that could handle some weight on it, and I really like the regular geometric shapes which made it looks professional and precise.
      • then, I tried to use paper to show how this structure may work as a pavilion and came out the final model
    • digital 3d model
      • after making out the actual model, I tried and made a digital one on the computer
  • feedbacks & responses
    • Q: The floor looks hard for students to stay on since it is oblique?
      • I added a flat floor in the digital model for students to work more comfortably on.
    • Q: Why is the ceiling open as it should be quiet?
      • It is hard to make the glasses from the actual model to show the differences with other walls, so I use two different materials in the digital model to show the differences between them.
    • Q: What could the student do inside it?
      • The students could do whatever they want but only if it is quiet and not disturbing others. This is a place for them to relax from the heavy pressures.
  • big decisions:
    • After the failure of the first model, I found it important to make the structure stable and easier to control. So I decided to use the triangular structure and the octahedrons seems easy to make, and I made some out. After that, I realized that it is cool to connect all of them together which formed the big structure with 9 octahedrons.
    • However, at this stage, the structure has nothing to do with a pavilion, so I think of using the advantages of 9 octahedrons and making a path through which people can walk in. I uses paper triangles to cover the space and made it more like a shelter. Then, I realized it seems like a maze shape.
    • Because this pavilion can be a closed space, I came out with the idea of making it into a quiet place for students to relax. As a result, I decided to use sound-absorbing materials to isolate the sound. In these ways, I got my final project of a ‘quiet maze’ that allows students to enjoy themselves.
  • presentation poster
    • I’m able to provide a functional pavilion for ISB students on the campus that succeed in the goal of this project.
    •  My audience may be all ISB students and teachers, and I’m aiming to present the idea of building this pavilion on the campus. As a result, I hope that they would appreciate this idea and consider this plan.
    • During the process, I successfully made out a 3d model of this pavilion which allowed me to screenshot it from different angles and be able to change the perspective easily. This made my progress much smoother than I thought.
    • pavilion presentation_0316
  • improvement
    • If I have more time, I could finalize the model about the details. Also, I could add desks and chairs (maybe sofas since they’re comfortable) for the students in the pavilion, instead of modeling everyone sitting on the ground. I could also add decorations on the walls to make them feel relaxed.

2 Buckets challenge

  • 2 Buckets challenge
    • to brainstorm problems that exist in our lives and think of brands that could fix them.

Made with Padlet
  • brainstorm
  • 3 rough drafts:
    • `
  • pitch slide
    • Even though the delivery system in China now is already well-developed, it is still really hard for people to get fresh daily food delivered because it takes time during the process, so these products are hard to keep fresh. Especially during the time of COVID-19, people are less likely to go outside and they tend to order processed food from Taobao or Jingdong.
    • This delivery system will also provide a chance for the local supermarkets to keep running since fewer people are coming.
