Landborghini: Create & Improve #3

Final Product:

Reflection on the prototype:

What were some strengths:

-One strength of the Landborghini was its designs. It was one of the best-looking models from the outside and inside, including the colors.

-Shows a great conversion of energy, from elastic to kinetic.

-Many detailed features, such as the switch for the engine pump, the functioning wheels, and the ability to stir the wheels.

-The movement of the car. Without any batteries or power, this model car uses science to move around. The rubber band launcher works very well.

-The clever usage of the name. Taking two major things (and person) and combing their names. (Mr. Landrum and Lamborghini)

What can we improve:

-Getting a stronger shell or outer layer.

-Changing the size of the car smaller to make kids with smaller hands able to play

-Making the rubber band easier to attach. Possibly automatically.

Peer Feedback:

Matilda: “It’s very cool. I like the insides it looks cool. No (I asked her if she has any criticisms).

Haozhe(senior & robotics lead engineer executive): It shows a good conversion from elastic potential energy to kinetic energy. And the two modes of it moving around are innovative. The rubber band attachment could be easier.

Clara: It kinda reflects the energy conversion very well, and it is visually appealing like in a fancy way. It kinda wastes a lot of energy, because the amount of distance the car travels is short compared to the energy put into it.

William: Nice Design. Maybe tie the rubber band. nice color.

Grace: Its a really nicely designed product, involving a lot of high tech things, & its also easy to use & show energy conversion.

Eric: The color looks good 🙂

Matilda: The inner worlds must have taken a lot of time! Well done 🙂

Julia: Positive: -Well designed -Looks complete Negative: -intended ~?

Landborghini Reflect & Share #4

Overview of the Design Process:

On the first day(class), Sunny and I spent a lot of time deciding what to do, and trying to get our design briefs similar. We first talked about our goals, reason why we are building the car, our rough plan, what we were going to use, and how much time we had. And then we talked about who we were building this for, which he said children, as I said for ourselves. I was worried that children might not like the design of the car if we were going to theoretically sell it, but he was persistent.

On the next class(second class), we were able to come up with a rough sketch of the landborghini on a white board. We talked about if I can build the outer layer by 3D printing, but I realized it probably would take too long if we considered the time to design it on my computer, it would take too long, because the first print probably will have an issue, as only on the second or third print, it will succeed, and we didn’t have time for that. So we decided to make sketches quickly, until the next class, which are above. This is what we had at the end of the class:

For the 3rd day, Sunny and I were both absent. Sunny had a basketball game in Hong Kong, and I had BEIMUN. At our homes, I finished my sketch and worked on my blog posts, as I finished the outer layer with black paper, and Sunny finished his legos:

For the 4th day, we put the car together, and worked on improving the outer layers, specifically coloring it. We worked got feedback from a lot of professional designers, and worked on adding final touches of color into the car. We were really focusing on working on our blog posts. This is what we had at the end of the class:

After this, I worked and helped Sunny with his blog post, as he added a bit more finishing touches to the car. This is our FINAL design, and finishing product. We are very proud of this.

Use the Rubric & Your Own Success Criteria to Discuss the Strengths and Weaknesses of the Product.

Standards We Met in the Rubric:

-We clearly defined all details of the design problem and target audience

-We analyzed a wide range of precedents to inspire and inform solutions to the design problem

-We effectively applied design thinking practices to generate a wide range of divergent ideas

-Develop selected ideas into a range of design concepts, applying detailed feedback and self-reflection to clearly justify decisions

-Develop a highly detailed plan for creating the preferred design, including success criteria

-Apply extensive feedback to iterate and highly refine the design

-Demonstrate strong growth in technical and design skills

-Create a high-quality design that effectively responds to the stated problem

-Document the design process in detail, sharing my product and learning with others

-In detail, use the success criteria to explain the strengths and weaknesses of the process and product, including the specific impact of the design on the audience and environment

Standards Met by Our Own Criteria:

  1. Moveable wheels (all four)
  2. built on a constraint of 30x20x20cm
  3. Strong structure
  4. Fancy name
  5. Cool looking strucutre/outer layer

We met all these standards.

How and Why does the Product Meet the Design Specifications?

1._Moveable wheels (all four)

After testing, we confirm that our wheels are moveable.

2. built on a constraint of 30x20x20cm

Our car fits within 30x20x20 cm, with measuring.

3. Strong structure

The car has a strong structure. The inner layers are very strongly and securely built, and the outer layers are also very strong, because the paper is thick.

4. Fancy name

Our car has one of the coolest name, Landborghini. It combines Mr. Landrum and Lamborghini.

5. Cool-looking strucutre/outer layer

Our car has a very cool-looking structure inside and out. The outer layer is simply art. After adding the paper, we decorated it to be more realistic and added more cool-looking features to it. Our inner layers are very cool too. The sophisticated Legos look very cool and complex, as to show the coolness, we opened up spots in our car to show it.

What was I Most Proud of:

-I am most proud of overcoming the challenges that we faced. At first, we were struggling to decide what our target audience was going to be, but we came through it because of our teamwork, and agreement. Another example later on, is when we were making a rough decision on what the outer layer was going to be. 3D Printed? or made of cardboard? or made of wood from laser cutting? We decided to focus on making the inside, and use cardboard for the outer layers, but add paper to make it look cooler. We ended up just using strong paper.

What Did I Find Most Challenging:

– I think the biggest challenge was for me to write these blog posts. I had to take a lot of time to write them, and I was struggling to find the right time because I was very busy the last few weeks. I even had to miss a class.

Another Look at the Final Product of the Car:

Landborghini Planning & Design, and the Design Process #2

This is sunny’s plan of the inner lego functions, built as a plan:

Landborghini Design Brief: Design and Inquire #1

When we come across school projects or cheap model cars, we can see that they are ugly, as they also do not work properly. Model cars that look cool and function very well are very expensive, which is why Jeff and Sunny wants to create a model car, for children who are interested in the structure, mechanics, and appearance of model cars.

That is why I want to build a model car that has a good-looking appearance, but also has an elastic function that launches the car forward, and a few other details. But the car have to be less that 30cmx20cmx20cm, and 5 classes to finish the project. Our materials that we can use range from: legos, cardboard, 3d printing, laser cutters, provided tools, and etc.

The biggest success criteria are a good-appearing car and making the car’s wheel moveable without motors, with functional headlights.

  1. Moveable wheels (all four)
  2. built on a constraint of 30x20x20cm
  3. Strong structure
  4. Fancy name
  5. Cool looking strucutre/outer layer

Landborghini is named after Mr. Landrum, and Lamborghini, Land Borghini, to honor our awesome science teacher.

Here is the very general rough plan:

Heres a rough plan:

Mon: finish models, sketches, inquiring

Wed: Steering, interior, and the base of the car

Fri: Exterior of the car

Tue: Final touches

Here are some examples and inspirations of cars of the general ideas we have:

How Do We Save the World?

This is a video about how we could save the world. The world suffers from environmental problems, most of which come from using non-renewable energy waste. This is why we need Renewable Energy.

Importance of Renewable Energy

Problem with Our Non-Renewable Sources

You have a high chance of death if you live past 2050 because of the problems we cause to the environment.  If we keep up the toxic production, our death is inevitable. “Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause approximately 250 000 additional deaths per year, from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea and heat stress”(WHO). This is why we need renewable energy that allows us to avoid these consequences because fossil fuel, toxic gas, etc. would not be a problem. Why do we need renewable energy sources? What types of renewable energy are there? How do we start using renewable energy? And how might you help?

Why Do We Need Renewable Sources?

We need renewable sources because it so useful for the world, and it helps to stop further environmental damage.

Figure 1 Graph of Energy Usage

As energy usage goes higher, the global temperature goes higher as well. This is because not enough is being done to stop climate change.

Figure 2 Graph of Global Temperature

This graph shows how global warming increases drastically and that action needs to be taken. So more renewable energy needs to be used for the world to stop using more unrenewable energy. Once stopped, nature would do its job to restore the environment. “Renewables was the world’s cheapest source of energy in 2020, new report shows. Renewables are now significantly undercutting fossil fuels as the world’s cheapest source of power, according to a new report”(Masterson). Renewable energy is not only going to help produce more energy that can be produced in renewable ways, which makes the energy clean, but also cheap. Renewable energies are natural, which makes them easy to harvest. Solar energy, for example, is energy very easy to collect because it only requires a bunch of solar panels and makes them in direct contact with sunlight. We need renewable energy because renewable energy is not only useful but also prevents further damage to the environment.

What types of renewable energies are there?

If using renewable energy instead of non-renewable energy is important, what types of renewable energies are there? If using renewable energy instead of non-renewable energy is important, what types of renewable energy are there?

Solar Energy

As the evolution of Earth’s life started in water and sunlight, sunlight is Earth’s most plentiful source of energy. However, the amount of solar power we can use differ depending on geographical location and season(eia).

Wind energy

Like solar power, the wind is clean and abundant. The turbines are used to harness electricity from the turbine’s spinning friction to harness wind energy. Wind energy may not be the best source since natural wind is often in a small number of locations. However, new designs are more efficient, as it also provides solutions to some of the wind turbines’ problems that the wind turbines have(eia).

Hydro energy

Hydro energy is one of the most commercially developed renewable sources. Hydro energy is harnessed by building a dam or barrier to creating flowed water to drive a turbine, which will generate electricity. Like other energies, the amount of energy that the dam or barrier could create depends on the location(eia).

Tidal energy

Tidal energy is like a combination of wind energy and hydro energy. It uses turbines to collect energy from the power of waves that the ocean generates(eia).

Geothermal energy

Geothermal energy is a source of renewable energy that uses the magma underneath the earth to generate energy. Geothermal energy is a good source of energy. However, the source can only be found in certain rare areas that are suited to harness geothermal energy(eia).

Biomass Energy

Biomass energy is created by solid fuel made from plant materials. Even though Biomass requires burning organic materials, it was developed to be much more efficient, and cleaner with current development. This process of creating energy converts industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste into liquid, gas fuel, and solid for a much lower economic and environmental cost(eia).

These sources are the most efficient, as they largely provide renewable sources that are very possible for the future world to use. A rather smaller percentage of our world uses renewable sources. The only problem is for people to stop relying on non-renewable sources, and start using renewable sources.

How do we use renewable energy?

From the previous paragraphs, the problems are clear. We have to stop using non-renewable energy because nature cannot survive the waste we create. Then how do we start using renewable energy? The transition from fossil fuel to renewable will not be easy. This is not something that can be just easily done. This needs the biggest power/game-changers in the world: governments. To change governments we need support from the world and the citizens. The citizens can start campaigns to use 100% renewable energy sources. Celebrities and companies could join the campaign.

New Chapter of Humanity

We should start using more renewable energy. Renewable energy is important because it is safe for the environment, yet cheaper. There are many ways around the world where natural renewable sources can be made from nature. It is also very possible to start using these renewable sources. But how could you help? From the basics, you could help by preserving energy. For instance, you could save electricity in small things, such as turning off the lights when not using them, or not using electronics that consume too much energy. But to see the bigger picture, the whole world must start using renewable energy. This solution needs to be something that makes enough impact that the whole world would change. There needs to be an action that makes everyone agree to renewable energy. For example, there could be a “trend,” in renewable energy. This “trend,” could be supported by the UN, governments, celebrities, companies, and personnel. This method can not only persuade many people to appreciate renewable energy but also have most of the world having positive thoughts about renewable energy sources. To stop using non-renewable energy, we need renewable energy sources for the safety of everyone.

How a Country Almost Destroyed the World

Tibasta Sactro was a farmer that grew up to take a big part in the Cuban Revolution. He is a family-loving figure that also loves his country. He went through the whole revolution with the famous leader of the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro. Tibasta created the military tactics for their revolution, which was one of the most important parts of the revolution.

This is a Stream link to our Common Craft Video, created by Jeff, Ev, and Eugene.

Thanks you for watching the video and for your attention!

Cuban Rebellion of the Caribbean

Tibasta was a farmer who was done with the corrupt government. Tibasta wrote his journal to keep a record of what he felt about his events to share with future generations. Tibasta is a man who loves his family but also loved his country. The problem was corruption and economical struggles that made him rethink his opinion about the government. So he became a rebel and played a huge role in taking over the country, all started by 22 rebellions.

The Cuban revolution made a lot of impacts today. Cuba’s economy changed drastically, especially after the M-26-7 took over Cuba. Fidel Castro took full control, in a form of dictatorship, when he was Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces. He was a dictator until he died peacefully. But when he became a dictator, and also a communist, the US attempted to assassinate Castro 637 times until he died of old age, in 2016. Overall, Cuba played a big part in the conflicts of the Cold War. It began from the Bay of Pigs sent by the US, and a major problem was when Russia gave Cuba a nuclear missile-only 90 miles away from the US! Though Castro left positive changes to Cuba as well: They provided free health care and education to any Cuban citizen no matter who they are (they attempted to solve inequality). They also signed contracts with multiple countries such as Russia and China, which formed better relationships between countries, and were able to save the Cuban economy from the Sugar Act made by the US in an attempt to sabotage the Cuban Economy (Cuba’s economy was mostly from Sugar). Finally, the M-26-7 gave every farmer in Cuba agricultural land, up to 13.42 hectares, called “usufruct rights.

World Without Fish, Read This Book to Save Our Earth!

World Without Fish is a nonfiction book written by Mark Kurlansky. This book is about the ocean and addresses the problem of the ocean today, and what would happen if nothing happens after the disasters humans created today. However, changes can be done in order to keep peace in the ocean.

As I read this book, I took notes and created ideas about this book.

As I read the book, I created the idea as I was midway through the book, then edited it after I finished my book. I came up with the central idea: Do not fish too much.

Then I thought of another Central Idea while reading the book: Do not fish unknown species.

Then I learned about cause and effect. This book had a lot of cause and effect since the book addresses a problem, and finds an answer to it. While reading, it was important to question: “what else might cause this? ” and “what else might happen as a result?”.

In the final chapters of my book, it started to get complicated and hard to understand. So I decided to use one of the most useful techniques in reading: Rereading. It is especially useful to reread parts of the book that are confusing or parts of the book that are important to reread.

If even a small portion of marine species die out, it will heavily destroy the Earth’s animal economy due to Darwin’s law.  If even a small portion of marine species disappear, it will affect other marine species due to the connection between our nature. This also is involved towards Terrestrial Animals. For example, if cod disappears, which is already happening due to overfishing, pollution, and toxic leaks, other marine animals that eat cod will be deeply affected. Then, for example, ringed seals and ivory gulls will be damaged as well because one of their major source of food will be gone. However, a lot of fish species are endangered today. As in the notes, you can easily help by having an interest in our ocean. You can also volunteer to do voluntary work or even invent things to help clean the ocean junk, including littered trash and spilled toxic substances.

Thank you for taking your time to read my blog!

Which Way Will You Do When Things Are Tight?

Tight by Torrey Maldonado tells the story of the protagonist, Bryan, falling into pressure. The book tells us that pressure often hinders following challenges. Tight is about how different kids try to act the toughest out of pressure and gender roles. The gender for the boys of the school that Bryan goes to is that boys try to act tough and fight. Pressure from friends makes the boys make the boys act even tougher.
