The GOATs Are Not the Red COATs

Henry Brown, born in 1728 March 19th, wrote a journal during the American Revolution. This journal was later celebrated due to its detailed description on the events that happened during revolution. From his journal, it was predicted that he was a British male, aged around 37 when the journal was written. He is about 173cm tall, but it seemed that he claimed to be 177cm. All his life, Henry believed that the British were the most powerful. However, as the American Revolution happens, he starts to doubt what he had believed his entire life. Despite this, Henry truly would have had adored the land of Britain even it were not the power that it had. Therefore, Henry does not betray the Britain and works for the parliament until the moment his heart stops.

A revolution is not a revolution if there are no changes brought to the world by it. There is no exception for the American Revolution. One of the changes that the American Revolution brought is that it introduced a new form of government to many people including our main character, Henry Brown, who was a member of the British parliament. In 1732, George Washington became the first president of America, marking the start of a democratic government. One other change brought by the revolution was that it gave power to the hands of ordinary men. Because America became an independent country, they were able to be democratic, unlike the British. Having a democratic government means that ordinary people’s voices are also heard when making a decision as a nation. The final change that the revolution brought was that it made birth no longer destiny. This made nobody deny opportunities that come to them because of who their parents are. In my perspective, the changes that the revolution brought were overall positive and helpful. Although nowadays equality seems natural, back then it would have been a great privilege. It must have been fascinating for the Americans to suddenly have so many rights. On the other side, however, not everyone had more rights. Some things stayed the same. For example, slavery in the South was still ongoing. Many people, usually people of color, worked in cotton plantations. They also worked in rice, corn, and sugarcane farms. Another thing that did not change was the rights of women and Native Americans. These people did not have freedom even after the revolution and they were not allowed to vote for the representatives or work in the government. Although more rights were claimed, the wealthy stayed wealthy, and the poor stayed the poor. In conclusion, the revolution was worth it, because it brought many positive changes not only to America but also to the world.

Bloody British or Adventurous Americans

Give me liberty, or give me death!”-Patrick Henry

You may have heard of the phrase, ‘America has a short history’. Although today America is known as one of the most powerful nations in the world, as it has great military forces, global influences, economic strength, and many more,  it is actually true that America has a shorter history compared to other nations around the world. It was in 1492 when America was first discovered by Christopher Columbus. After this, the British fought the French for seven years to gain power over the land of America. However, the British shouldn’t have done that because now the British people who moved into America were rebelling against Britain. The British had very little money due to the money spent on the war, but the colonies were not willing to pay their tax. These events cause multiple battles to happen. The video below captures the many dramatic and crucial scenes of the American Revolution.  While you are watching the video, think to yourself, how would you have survived the revolution if you were there?

A suspiciously informative survival guide for the Antarctic

The non-fiction survival story, LOST in the Antarctic, by Tod Oldson, is an incredible documentation of 29 men’s survival in the world’s coldest place- Antarctic. The long journey of the brave men starts in the commence of 1914 and ends in the windup of 1916. During this very icy trip, Shackleton, the boss, encourages the crew to always hold on to their hopes, even when the worst scenarios occur, such as Endurance, the ship, crackin apart. After reading this story, I got motivated by Shackleton, and learned that to be a helpful leader, we need to encourage the crew.

This page shows my pressure map on the main character- Ernest Shackleton. Although he is a great leader, Shackleton felt great pressure because he knew that if he makes one wrong move, the entire crew might end up in the middle of nowhere with nobody to help them. In one of the boxes, I quote page 55 and say, “It was soon noticed that it was best not to get in the boss’s way.” This quote shows how Shackelton tried his best to lead to crew success, but sometimes he was stubborn and would anger when things do not go his way. Because from other parts of the book we know that Shackleton is a great leader, from this quote we could realize that Shackleton is feeling a lot of pressure, which is vitalizing him to have temper issues.

This page describes why I believe that Shackelton is a encouraging leader (my theme). Throughout the book, the author illustrates Shackleton as a helpful and necessary member of the crew. One evidence of this is shown on page 128. On that page it says. “‘The boss is wonderful…cheering everyone and far more active than any other person in camp.'” This quote is from Wordie ( a member of the crew)’s diary. Although the quote already said it, Shackleton was truly passionate about the trip, more than any other person on the ship.

This page describes one of my central idea which is the crew was always happy to be on the trip. I supported my central idea with a quote from page 27 and it reads, ” For Shackelton it was a relief to leave all the… money grabbing behind.” This quotes explains that Shackleton was happy to go back to nature because he was sick and tired of the money-focused society. I was agreeing with Shackelton for this part because I also noticed that the society nowadays is so financially centered.

This is a cause and effect map of a minor happening in my book. I was surprised to see the many causes to this minor event. I think all happening come from big and small emotions and thoughts. For example, Lees ( the cook) and Shackleton’s fight over the sausage for breakfast seems like a very small thing, but is actually a result of all the anxiety and other emotions they were feeling caused by the uncertain future.

Thank you for making it to the end of my blog post. I enjoyed this book because I was able to learn not only how it is like to survive in the Antarctic but also some life lessons. Before reading this book, I didn’t identify myself as a very strong non-fiction reader, but now I think that non-fiction books have a stronger connection to the readers compared to fiction books because they are more realistic and honest. I would recommend this book to any teenagers to adults hoping to find thrilling adventure stories that makes your heart pump.

Not all humans are alive for the same reason.

humanists

Although I wholeheartedly agree with most of the beliefs humanist have, I also somewhat disagree with others. However, if I have to choose one between living during the renaissance as a humanist and living during the middle ages as a huge christian, I would choose living during the Renaissance as a humanist with no doubt. This is because I think that finding balance between religion and daily life is sincerely crucial. Although religion is a great way to find inner peace and therefore it could be helpful during life, if someone is too caught up in a certain belief they might not be able to look at the world in a broader view. I also agree with how humanists thought about the social standing during the Renaissance. Living a life where everything is destined may be devastating and boring.  If people are assigned to duties depending on how much effort they put in and how good they are in something, it would not only be fair but also fun because then people would have goals. Therefore, I find myself 80% humanist.

S in summer stands for Sheila, U in summer stands for unforgettable.

The found poem above is taken from page 4 of the short story ‘The Bass The River And Sheila Mant‘ by W.D. Wetherell. It illustrates two types of conflicts the narrator faces, which is ‘man vs. himself'( internal conflict) and ‘man vs. man'( external conflict) . The characters in this story are the narrator( the protagonist) and the bass/Sheila (antagonist). In the rising action of the story, the author shows the main character’s romantic feelings towards Sheila, which is man vs. man because Sheila seems like she does not like the main character back. Meanwhile, the author also illustrates character’s eager for the gigantic fish, which is also man vs. man because it disturbs the relationship of the main character and his crush. The fish is just one way to increase the conflict between the characters. However, towards the climax, the narrator realizes that he has to choose one between the fish and his love, because Sheila does not like fishing and the narrator wants to impress Sheila. This is an important conflict because the narrator has to make a choice between two things he favors the most. Therefore, the narrator had to choose between the fish and his love, which is man vs. man, in other words the external conflict in this story. I showed the external conflict in my found poem by highlighting the 2 options the main character was struggling between. I did this by using repetition. The poem starts with ‘Sheila, the fish, and mounting panic’, and later on continues with ‘Sheila was a tug on my heart, the bass was another tug on my heart’. Also, I made the conflict even clear by choosing the line, ‘get to Dixford ( for Sheila ), I would loose the fish.’  I wanted to illustrate the scene as if the main character is standing infront of a crossroad, one of the ways being love, and the other being a chance that will never come back. In the meanwhile, the internal conflict in the story is when the narrator is deciding whether he should impress his crush or have the enormous fish. This conflict is man vs. himself because the narrator struggles to make a choice and it is like as if there are two versions of him inside his head, arguing whether he should pull the fish up or let the fish go.  My favorite quote in the found poem above is ‘the tug was too much for me,’ because although from the surface the quote sounds like the narrator is talking about the fish that is pulling onto his fishing rod, for me it almost felt like the narrator was explaining how he felt about having to choose between the two choices, and it also shows the internal conflict well.  This conflict is important because it shows the complex emotions the narrator is feeling when he has to decide one between two things. I showed the internal conflict in my poem by choosing words such as ‘sick, nauseous, sore’ which shows the emotion of the character is feeling when he chooses Sheila over the bass. Finally, I also added the line ‘the moon was out now,’ in the poem, and this is because I thought the setting of the story was important to how the main character was behaving.  In the image that I drew, you could see that the moon is a full moon. The spiritual meaning of the full moon is ‘letting go of the things that no longer serve you so you can start the next month refreshed.’ I think this really connects to the second to the last line of my found poem because the line says ‘before the month was over she was gone, over, lost…’ which perfectly explains why the moon was up. I foreshadowed that the boy is going to get over the girl by drawing the moon a full moon ( although I do not know if this is what the author was aiming for haha). In conclusion this found poem shows the external and internal conflict the character faces, and it is special because it deals with conflicts that every teenager could face which is love vs. a chance that will never return.

My Cardboard Arcade Projects

These are my Cardboard Arcade Projects I made during design. The first project I made was the ‘throw the ball game’. This game was easy to make because Nahu and I had a very clear plan. Because the first project we did went really nice and fast, we had enough time to make a second project. So, the second project we decided to make was the maze. I was surprised by how many students enjoyed our back-up game than our original game but I was glad neither way. My biggest success was that Nahu and I had used the time decently and had enough time to decorate both games. My biggest obstacle was when I was making the maze project and the marvel inside didn’t easily come out. Nahu and I had to make a hole on the bottom and tried to get the marvel out, but it did’t work as quick as we thought. Then, Mr. Layman gave us the idea to make a whole on the side and it worked much better. One thing I would like to change is the holes on maze. The holes there was too small for the marvels and they didn’t fall. If the hole were bigger it would  have made the game harder. Overall, my design was successful because it had successfully done the job of it.
