Code Girls, History and Narrative

Code Girls takes place in the United States during the Second World War. The US military was  in desperate need of intelligence workers, or code breakers, in order to bolster their already weak intelligence department. In order to achieve this, the government hired young girls in college or female schoolteachers. The book emphasizes a difference between the historical textbook knowledge in comparison to the more personal narrative details subtly embedded and hidden within the history. ‘Code Girls’ is also full of symbolism appealing to the narrative aspect of the novel by adding several creative element . Additionally the novel teaches the reader the double-edged sword that is history and bias. There is no complete good or evil and Code Girls certainly tries to highlight and bring attention to stereotypes and implicit bias.

One element of the novel which I instantly took notice of was the extremely detailed and intense descriptions of the daily life and work routines of the girls. This aspect not only highlights the sacrifices and hardships the girls went through, but also helps the reader establish a  more in depth relationship with the women of this time period.

Speaking of personal connections within historical textbooks, ‘Code Girls masterfully balances the narrative and personal aspects of history,  with the more textbook and factual evidence.  As we see with the notebook pages above, the author, Liza Mundy,  puts a special emphasis on the distinction that exists within history. She is hellbent on informing the reader with statistics and facts, however, she does not refrain from narrowing the lens and exploring the several independent stories of the time period.

Something that really caught me by surprise was how Liza Mundy addresses stereotypes and implicit bias in her novel. Considering that the premise of her entire gender norms and stereotypes, Liza Mundy made certain that her message was conveyed clearly. Implicit bias is something possessed by each and every one of us, thus aggression and aversion is unnecessary and harmful.

Am I a Renaissance Humanist

The Renaissance

I have analyzed the ideals and beliefs of a Renaissance humanist the question comes, am I a Renaissance Humanist. In my opinion I am a humanist.

One of the several aims that I share with humanists of the past is the belief in Secularism. Religion as a whole should be distanced  from affairs of the state in order to avoid further conflict between states possessing separate religions. The Israeli – Palestinian war, the Syrian civil war, and the struggles between Afghanistan and Iraq are all modern day conflicts  caused by religion. Would it not be for the better if  religion could be separated from matters of state to avoid further conflict.

Social Mobility is another prominent theme concerning the Renaissance which I strongly agree with. Prioritizing ability over lineage actively debases the feudal system building up to a new era of enlightenment.  The idea of Social mobility allowed for world changing innovations and transitioned the world away from the feudal era.

Lamb to the Slaughter Found Poem

“Lamb to the Slaughter” by Roald Dahl  is a short story that sends a message concerning the ugliness and fragility of human nature with the conflict being both internal, with the antagonist Mary battling herself, and external with a clash of desires. When selecting quotes for the Found Poem emotional impact and conflict were not the only priority, as how a quote reflects the overall message was also taken into consideration.  An example of this is with the quote “She loved to luxuriate in the presence of this man.” this quote conveys a message regarding women’s rights at that time. In addition to this the quote also serves as a contrast to later on in the story when Mary’s love shifts into anger and grief highlighting the fragility of human emotion. “How clear her mind became” is another impactful quote from the story, as we see Mary progress through the many stages of grief, the description is concise yet somehow detailed enough for the reader to experience the exact notion that the author is hinting at. “Personally, I think it’s … right under our noses.” undoubtedly one of the very best lines in the story, serving as the perfect close off. The very last piece of dialogue summarizes the “Lamb to the Slaughter” perfectly with authorities being right about their initial hunches but, ignoring the ugliness and vulnerability of humans this one quote helped many understand the overall message of the story. As for design I attempted to utilize different colors moving from warm colors to darker ones as the plot progressed to the climax.

My Pet Chair Project

My biggest success with my Pet Chair was the photography I feel like I made the chair look much better with the lighting and angles. However the thing that obstructed me the most during the project was definitely the materials, I had an extremely difficult time gathering all of the materials for the project. On top of that many of the materials I had were unsuitable for the project and did not yield the desired outcome. If I were to redo this project I would definitely choose to make more of a traditional design instead of what I opted to do. A piece of advice I would give to future students trying to complete this project is do not do this at home if you don’t have the materials needed.
