FRENCH REVOLUTION HISTORICAL JOURNAL

“Was a revolution worthy?” This is a question that always accompanies when future generation evaluates a revolution. “Change” and “Continuity” is a key word for evaluating revolution, as it is history by its own. To describe french revolution, a pivotal revolution of human history in late 18th century, ” change in continuity “would be the perfect word; since French revolution is considered as one of the most important revolution that left ideas of liberty and democratic rights as a legacy by setting precedents of overthrowing corrupt and unjust nobles and pursuing freedom, equality, and fraternity.
In my historical fictional journal, the main character , Victor is skeptical to the revolution as he was tired of reign of terror. I would like to portray french revolution from a different perspective of the time of revolution.
I hope you enjoy the journal!

French Revolution in Plain English- from monarchy to republic, then one-man dictatorship?!

“The French Revolution is the ultimate modernist statement. Destroy everything.” -John Corigliano

“The word “terror” was originated from the French Revolution”

“The French Revolution taught us the rights of man.” Thomas Sankara

These are the quotes about the French Revolution, which was a revolution that shaped modern socio-political ideologies by setting precedents for overthrowing unjust society and authority.

Due to the French Revolution, the late 18th century in France might have been one of the most chaotic years in the history of humanity; radical ideologies, violence, and rapid fluctuations in political systems was prevailing in french during the era.  “Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité”,(Liberty, Equality, and fraternity)- the slogan of revolutionaries- provoked approximately 28 million peasants to overthrow the unjust socio-political system of the French monarchy, and King Louis XVI. Not only did it put an end to the feudal system, disband a kingdom and its monarchy, and establish civil laws and fairer representation of all peoples under governance. However, it did not last long, as the one-man dictatorship was stored by Napoleon. Despite this, It is more than enough to say that the  French Republic was one of the most Preeminent revolutions in history.  In this video, we will be discussing about chronologically ordered events of the French Revolution in plain language; how it changed from monarchy to republic, and how Napoleon changed it back to autocracy. The legacies of the French Revolution will be also discussed.

Inspiring story of resilient boys-reading notes+ book review.

Nature is Strong. It is hopeless to fight against them. In 2018, 13 amazing boys from Thailand fought for themselves in survival situations during natural disasters.  The boys were trapped in a chamber of a flooding cave named Tham Luang, facing severe starvation, lack of oxygen, and stress; However, with great resilience, courage, and hope, the boys managed to stand still and never give up.  The award-winning literary non-fiction “All Thirteen” by Christina Soontornvat, which won the Kirkus Young Leader Award and was Honored in the Newbery and Sibert Medal depicts the inspiring rescue story of boys with great details. The book shows how important leadership, hope, and courage is by showing how boys managed to retain the will of survive and resilience in a situation that seemed almost impossible to survive.

During Unit 5 of the 8th-grade class,  Which is named Stranger than Fiction, I chose ” All Thirteen” to read for the class. Throughout the whole unit, we learned through the example of the novel “Hidden Figures” in class and applied the reading and analyzing skills to the books that we chose. My progress was written in a notebook and this is it (There are some spoilers, scroll if you do not want)

This is the note from day 1 of the unit. In day 1, I learned about Themes, central ideas and issues, which are the basics, yet the most important part of the books. According to What I learned during class, Central ideas, Themes, and main issues are related, but deferent. The Main issues are what happens in the book mainly, central ideas are recurring ideas, or motifs in the book, and the theme is the life message that the writer tries to convey to the readers. With some quotes in hidden figures, we learned how to identfy themes, central ideas, and issues. The bottom part of the notebook page is about the examples from All 13. With evidences from book, I identified the rising themes and central ideas from the “All  Thirteen”

In day 4, we learned different reading strategies, which are focusing on narratives or informations. In class, we practiced those reading strategy in pair work. Me and my partner Tairan shared some tips and the informations we got after applying different stretagy of reading on Hidden Figures. Then, I reviewed the book with the method I learned. This and day 1 note futher developed into my note in day 6, which was central idea assessment

Above is a note of central idea, which is day 6. Key for the note was organizing complex ideas of the book in one page. I wrote examples from books (Quotes) and made connections and analyzed them. Under the central idea of leadership, that is revealed through main issue ,which was the accident happened in Tham Luang cave, I made connections with many different ideas.

In day 7, we learned how to make connection between various central ideas. It was similar to day 6 note page, but it was more about making connections between many different ideas of book. In class, I learned that one event can show many different ideas and they are connected. I made more complicated connections.

Although the reading journey was not very smooth in this unit due to some difficulties on understanding some concepts, it was enjoyable. For me analyzing a literary non-fiction deeply with various aspects were a whole new experience, but It was a good experience, for I learned how to make more insightful thinking while reading not only the literary non-fictions, but also fictions.

I would like to recommend this book for people who are seeking a nice literary non fiction with not complicated vocabs, and interesting and immersive storyline. It would be a great fun if you also read this inspiring book and analyize as I did.

App Design

During the app design part of the Robotics & App Design, I made an app for my Grandmother. The client had a problem of the Dementia, and I wanted to make an activity that is using memory and number cognition that updates everyday like wordle.  The main symptom of the dementia is decline of memorizing ability, and cognition, and that’s the reason why I chose to build an activity that uses that abilities. My most viable products is the activity, and the add ons was the clock and voice recognization. I used big ponts in order to make a playable game for my grandma whose eyes are bad. My add ons were stopwatch, and the voice recognization. Stopwatch function was done with some flaws and I am working on the voice recognization play function in Korean. My app layouts were complexed with many different buttons in first, but my grandma told me that it’s to complicated to her, so I made as simple as I can (Slide 8 of the ppt  is the layout). The activity was coded for 3 school days and about 5-6 hours at home. It took more time to finish programming because I restarted the project after some errors.n mThe activity has error in some devices, so I still have to work on it. The card flips and stays flipped in some devieces and the timer starts in the millisecond from 1970.

Found Poem-Lamb to the slaughter

The found poem I created is created with parts(paragraphs 1,2,3, and 12)  of a story, “Lamb to the slaughter“by Roald Dahl, and it represents the conflicts of the story. In the story, there are three major conflicts, The main character and her husband who was murdered by her(person v person), Her reaction(inner conflict after killing her Husband), and conflict between her against the neighbors and detectives, who can reveal her crime, which is person versus society conflict. The main conflict(Conflict that leads to climax) of this story is the conflict between Mrs. Maloney who wants to hide her crime and society who can reveal her guilt; however, two conflicts in the front have a crucial role in the story as it gives more tension to the story, and it is necessary to develop the plot. Especially, change of Mrs. Maloney’s attitude caused by the conflict is a point that makes this story interesting. She loved her husband at first but she killed her husband impulsively and became psychopathic as the story continues. She also has inner conflict when she tries to hide her crime. Likewise inner Conflict of Mrs. Maloney is revealed in all the parts of the story.  The text shows that she became colder and colder. Person versus Person conflict is important in the story as well. Mrs. Maloney’s husband declared to leave Mrs. Maloney, and this caused her overreaction which ended up with the tragic incident. This conflict works as a catalyst in the rising action which develops story further and leads other conflicts naturally. This book will be interesting if you read books with observing Mrs. Maloney’s mental change caused by inner conflict and conflict with her husband. This will make the Main part more interesting, as her emotion affects the plots a lot.

My Found Poem describes Mrs. Maloney’s inner conflict and conflict between her and her husband, and it is written in Mrs. Maloney’s perspective, which means Mrs. Maloney is the protagonist and Her Husband is an Antagonist. My poem shows how External conflict with Mrs. Maloney changed caused internal conflict and changed her perspectives. I wrote this poem in Mrs. Maloney’s perspective so that readers can understand Mrs. Maloney’s perspective change through conflicts which is very important to understand the story deeply. My found poem’s keywords describe it. Mrs Maloney wanted to be with her husband, so she said she felt like vomiting when her husband told her that he is leaving. However, as time goes on and Plot develops(She Killed her husband and tried to hide), she forgets about how guilty she is and begins to be colder.

Design Project-PD4-Soohyun Chung

In the PD-4 class, we recently did projects with wood, by using 2D Fusion and Lightburn. At first, I had to choose from several options for projects. I wanted to make Mondrian Pattern Lamp, Rubik cube shape Lamp, and a Phone holder for a locker with a cute design. I considered practicality and my need. Considering Practicality, I didn’t need any Lamps. I already had a ramp for my desk and don’t use it frequently. In the second room, I didn’t need it either.  It was not practical to make a lamp because I don’t use it often. On the other hand, the Phone holder for the locker was what I really need. My Locker was often unorganized.  It was sometimes hard to find my stuff there. Therefore, I decided to make a Phone holder that can hold my cell phone and some other stuff such as Pencils for the project.

The first thing I did was to determine the materials I need. I had two options in wood. 3mm and 5mm. I chose 3mm. Because it was I could make it lighter so that It gives less burden to things that stick it inside the locker. Secondly, I picked a hinge in order to make the lid of the holder and make it operate well.  Also, I chose some magnets to fix the lid.

Then, I put it on the fusion. In Fusion, I applied a funny design that looks like a mouth opening. I learned fingers in class and applied it according to the material thickness. And then, I exported it into Lightburn and sent it into Laser Cutter, Printed it. When I assemble, I put Stein first and colored it.

Reflection

-I have to use fusion more fluently. I made some mistakes that caused problems in lightburn. As I put in Multiple Sketches, Many lines were duplicated. Also I wasted so much time due to bad skills.

This is my failed 1st fusion. I couldn’t remove things because of doing it at multiple sketches
